A potential biomarker of varying severity in patients with first-episode drug-naïve depressive disorder: Evidence from the alteration of EEG microstates.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorder (DD) is a heterogeneous disease, and the dynamic of the electroencephalogram (EEG) changes associated with different severities DD remain unclear. Identifying objective biomarkers of disease severity can improve treatment strategies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 117 first-episode drug-naïve DD patients and 36 demographically matched healthy controls (HC). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), with patient stratification into mild-to-moderate (MMDD) group and severe (SDD) group based on HA

Alteration of state-transition dynamics and its clinical significance in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are severe psychiatric disorders characterized by cognitive impairment. Evidence su … ansition, and have a tendency to maintain the current pathological states, potentially resulting in cognitive flexibility impairment. Compared with traditional controllability indicators, the proposed HeTE and HoME may serve as sensitive quantitative markers to guide functional recovery in psychiatric disorders.

The Long and Winding Road to Real-Life Experiments: Remote Assessment of Executive Functions with Computerized Games-Results from 8 Years of Naturalistic Interventions.

Mate Marote is an open-access cognitive training software aimed at children between 4 and 8 years old. It consists of a set of computerized games specifically tailored to train and evaluate Executive Functions (EF), a class of processes critical for purposeful, goal-directed behavior, including working memory, planning, flexibility, and inhibitory control. Since 2008, several studies were performed with this software at children's own schools in interventions supervised in-person by cognitive scientists. After 2015, we incorporated naturalistic, yet controlled, interventions with children's ow

Microglia and complement mediate early corticostriatal synapse loss and cognitive dysfunction in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating monogenic neurodegenerative disease characterized by early, selective pathology in the basal gang … atory input to the striatum and rescued the early development of visual discrimination learning and cognitive flexibility deficits in these models. Together, our findings implicate microglia and the complement cascade in the selective, early degeneration of corticostriatal synapses and the development of cognitive deficits in presymptomatic HD; they also provide new pr …

Integrating Mindfulness and Acceptance Into Traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study of an Adult Man With Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) can be chronic and impairing, highlighting the need for effective treatments. Although Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for GAD, a number of patients continue to report GAD symptoms treatment. Integrating evidenced-based treatment components into CBT treatments, such as mindfulness- and acceptance-based treatment components found in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), may help improve the efficacy of treatment. Emerging interventions and research suggest that the cognitive restructuring aspect of CBT and acceptance stance of ACT

Behavioral flexibility in a mouse model for obsessive-compulsive disorder: Impaired Pavlovian reversal learning in SAPAP3 mutants.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessive thinking, compulsive behavior and anxiety, and is often accompanied by cognitive deficits. The neuropathology of OCD involves dysregulation of cortical-striatal circuits. Similar to OCD patients, SAPAP3 knockout mice 3 (SAPAP3-/- ) exhibit compulsive behavior (grooming), anxiety and dysregulated cortical-striatal function. However, it is unknown whether SAPAP3-/- display cognitive deficits and how these different behavioral traits relate to one another. SAPAP3-/- and wild-type (WT) littermates were trained in a Pavlovian conditi

Representation of the inferred relationships in a map-like space.

A cognitive map is an internal representation of the external world that guides flexible behavior in a complex environment. Cognitive map theory assumes that relationships between entities can be organized using Euclidean-based coordinates. Previous studies revealed that cognitive map theory can also be generalized to inferences about abstract spaces, such as social spaces. However, it is still unclear whether humans can construct a cognitive map by combining relational knowledge between discrete entities with multiple abstract dimensions in nonsocial spaces. Here we asked subjects to learn to

The neural bases of resilient semantic system: evidence of variable neuro-displacement in cognitive systems.

The purpose of this study was to explore an important research goal in cognitive and clinical neuroscience: What are the neurocomputational mechanisms that make cognitive systems "well engineered" and thus resilient across a range of performance demands and to mild levels of perturbation or even damage? A new hypothesis called 'variable neuro-displacement' suggests that cognitive systems are formed with dynamic, spare processing capacity, which balances energy consumption against performance requirements and can be resilient to changes in performance demands. Here, we tested this hypothesis by

Cognitive deficits are a matter of emotional context: inflexible strategy use mediates context-specific learning impairments in OCD.

The present study examines the interplay between cognitive deficits and emotional context in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and social phobia (SP). Specifically, this study examines whether the inflexible use of efficient learning strategies in an emotional context underlies impairments in probabilistic classification learning (PCL) in OCD, and whether PCL impairments are specific to OCD. Twenty-three participants with OCD, 30 participants with SP and 30 healthy controls completed a neutral and an OCD-specific PCL task. OCD participants failed to adopt efficient learning strategies and sh

Neurobehavioral Disorders: The Corticolimbic System in Health and Disease.

The corticolimbic system (prefrontal cortices, amygdala, and hippocampus) integrates emotion with cognition and produces a behavioral output that is flexible based on the environmental circumstances. It also modulates pain, being implicated in pathophysiology of maladaptive pain. Because of the anatomic and function overlap between corticolimbic circuitry for pain and emotion, the pathophysiology for maladaptive pain conditions is extremely complex. Addressing environmental needs and underlying triggers is more important than pharmacotherapy when dealing with feline orofacial pain syndrome or

The Carotid Siphon as a Pulsatility Modulator for Brain Protection: Role of Arterial Calcification Formation.

A healthy vasculature with well-regulated perfusion and pulsatility is essential for the brain. One vascular structure that has received little attention is the carotid siphon. The proximal portion of the siphon is stiff due to the narrow location in the skull base, whilst the distal portion is highly flexible. This flexible part in combination with the specific curves lead to lower pulsatility at the cost of energy deposition in the arterial wall. This deposited energy contributes to damage and calcification. Severe siphon calcification stiffens the distal part of the siphon, leading to less

Utilizing Multiple Triboelectric Nanogenerator Sensors and Signal Processing Technology for Monitoring Periodic Leg Movements of Sleep.

High-quality sleep is essential for both physiological and cognitive functions. However, periodic leg movements of sleep (PLMS), an involuntary phenomenon during sleep, affects millions of people worldwide, contributing to sleep fragmentation and functional impairments. The accurate monitoring of PLMS is important for identifying and addressing these issues. Traditional methods, such as polysomnography (PSG), which monitor the bare tibialis muscle movements in clinical environments, may not adequately reflect the natural sleep patterns at home. They are costly and unsuitable for long-term stud
