[A Case of Primary Sigmoid Colon Lymphoma Presenting with Sigmoidovesical Fistula in a Patient with a Long History of Ulcerative Colitis].

A 73-year-old male patient with a 16-year history of ulcerative colitis presented to our hospital with a history of pneumaturia and fever. Cystoscopy and a computed tomography scan showed sigmoidovesical fistula. Colonoscopy showed a necrotic tumor along with sigmoidovesical fistula. A biopsy was not sufficient to make a definitive diagnosis of the tumor. Total colectomy with ileostomy and partial cystectomy were performed. A pathological examination showed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the sigmoid colon. On postoperative day 35, delayed dehiscence of the bladder wall was detected and a bio

A Rare Case Of Sigmoid Colon Perforation With Subsequent Psoas Abscess Collection With Extensive Involvement Of The Sartorius Muscle.

A middle-aged man was admitted with worsening hip pain, fevers and reduced mobility. These symptoms were preceded by a mechanical fall but despite regular analgesia, symptoms did not resolve. His prior medical history included ischaemic heart disease, hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. A trauma and orthopaedic review revealed a painful left hip with reduced range of motion. In addition, some mild tenderness in the left iliac fossa was noted. Blood tests revealed markedly raised inflammatory markers. Plain radiographs and ultrasound were normal. MRI scan found a massive left iliopsoas coll

Concurrence of primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus with adenocarcinoma of sigmoid colon and villous adenoma of cecum: a case presentation.

In this paper, a 74 years old male patient with complaints of dysphagia and hemoptysis is presented. Endoscopy revealed black colored mass protruding to the lumen at distal esophagus. Diagnosis of malignant melanoma was confirmed with biopsy. Examinations for staging purposes revealed masses at sigmoid colon and cecum. Biopsy was performed with colonoscopy. The mass at the sigmoid colon was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma and the mass at the cecum was diagnosed as villous adenoma. Although the treatment strategy is not straightforward, surgical treatment is the most important step. For this reason

Molecular and immunohistochemical profile of a basaloid (cloacogenic) carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: possible predictive value for clinical outcomes.

A 61-year-old woman was hospitalized with a 5-week history of abdominal discomfort, change in bowel habits, and weight loss. Colonoscopy showed a protruded tumor of the sigmoid colon first diagnosed as undifferentiated carcinoma. Surgical resection of the sigmoid colon was performed. Histological examination of the surgical specimen showed a proliferation of basaloid cells arranged in tumor clusters with central comedonecrosis and peripheral palisading of the nuclei. The tumor invaded the subserosa and presented liver metastasis without lymph node metastases. The tumor cells were marked by ker

[A case report of the use of laparoscopic surgery to remove an adrenal tumor following resection of sigmoid colon cancer].

A 58-year-old woman underwent sigmoidectomy and partial cystectomy for sigmoid colon cancer following colostomy. The final staging of the tumor was T3, N1, tub2, M0, fStage IIIa. She received 6 courses of CapeOX (oxaliplatin 130mg/m², capecitabine 200mg/m²) as adjuvant chemotherapy, which was discontinued because of severe general fatigue. At the same time, an increase in the levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was detected and abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed an expanded adrenal mass. Since whole-body ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tom

Right side fixation of sigmoid colon with a hepato-sigmoidocolic fistula in patient with hepatocellular carcinoma and midgut malrotation.

The location of the sigmoid colon varies within the abdominal cavity, but its mesocolon is fixed to the left side. Right side fixation of the sigmoid colon is a very rare congenital positional anomaly. In addition, it has been reported that hepatocolic fistula is also a very rare disease that may present lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Here, the authors describe a case of a 71-year-old man who underwent surgery for hepato-sigmoidocolic fistula complicated by hepatocellular carcinoma and the right side fixation of the sigmoid colon.

[A case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow successfully treated with FOLFOX4/bevacizumab].

A 68-year-old man complaining of back pain was given the diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with disseminated carcinomatosis of bone marrow and disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC). We started chemotherapy using FOLFOX4. After we confirmed that DIC had improved following 2 courses of FOLFOX4, bevacizumab was added to FOLFOX4. Laboratory studies revealed a serum CEA level of 11, 432 ng/mL, which improved to 245 ng/mL after a total of 9 courses of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is continuing as scheduled at 6 months from the onset of this disease.

The oncologic benefit of high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in the surgical treatment of rectal or sigmoid colon cancer.

PURPOSE: It remains controversial as to whether high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) should be performed during surgical treatment for sigmoid colon or rectal cancer. The purpose of this study is to attempt to clarify the extent of the oncologic benefit of high ligation of the IMA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 1995 to July 2001, a total of 1,389 patients underwent high ligation of the IMA; 387 patients featured non-disseminated sigmoid colon cancer and 1,002 patients had rectal cancer. Pathology of the primary tumors, IMA nodes, and clinical outcome were reviewed. RES

Colorectal infantile myofibromatosis: an unusual cause of rectal prolapse and sigmoid colo-colonic intussusception: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare mesenchymal disorder of infancy that can extensively involve the viscera including the gastrointestinal tract. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, an exceptional case of infantile myofibromatosis is described in which rectal prolapse and sigmoid colo-colonic intussusception were the initial presentations of colorectal involvement in a 2-month-old premature female infant. CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reporting rectal prolapse and the second case documenting intussusception secondary to gastrointestinal involvem

[A case of patient with insulinoma of the pancreas anl infammatory tumor of the sigmoid colon-one-step operation treatment].

The paper presents the case of a 61 year-old man on with a rare disease--insulinoma of the pancreas. The tumor was discovered accidentally and it displayed no hormonal symptoms. The abdominal pain that the patient had suffered from was probably caused by the inflammatory tumor localized in the sigmoid as the result of diverticulitis. As the patient had no defecation problems, concentration was placed preoperatively on pancreas tumor diagnosis. During the operation the pancreas tumor as well as the sigmoid tumor were resected. Implantation of the whole profile of pancreas tail to the stomach wa

How many lymph nodes are necessary to stage early and advanced adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and upper rectum?

The lymph-node yields in specimens resected for colorectal adenocarcinoma show considerable variations, raising the question whether the minimum lymph-node number recommended by the UICC (International Union Against Cancer) for pN0 classification represents an appropriate quality standard for specimen work-up. The number of pericolic lymph nodes recovered from 568 archival surgical colorectal carcinoma specimens located in the sigmoid or upper rectum showed a highly statistically significant correlation with both the pT category and the presence of metastases ( P<0.0005). The median lymph-node

Prospective evaluation of laparoscopy-assisted colectomy versus laparotomy with resection for management of complex polyps of the sigmoid colon.

Laparoscopy-assisted colectomy is technically feasible, but objective evidence of its benefits remains scarce. This study was done to evaluate the outcomes and operative stress of laparoscopy-assisted colectomy versus the traditional open method in the management of sigmoid complex polyps that cannot be safely or adequately removed by colonofibroscopy. Between January 1997 and December 1999, a total of 42 patients were equally randomized to the laparoscopy group and the laparotomy group by the blocked randomization method. Three patients randomized to the laparoscopy group did not complete the

Endometriosis causing extensive intestinal obstruction simulating carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report and review of the literature.

Endometriosis with intestinal serosal involvement is not uncommon in women of childbearing age, however, presentation as colon obstruction is rare. Lack of pathognomonic symptoms makes diagnosis difficult, the main problem being differential diagnosis with neoplasm, even intraoperatively. Reported here is a case of extensive bowel obstruction due to sigmoid colon endometriosis in a 43-year-old woman who presented with signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction. Barium enema showed sigmoid obstruction; subsequent exploratory laparotomy showed the sigmoid colon surrounded by fibrous tissue, leading

Well differentiated "lipoma-like" liposarcoma of the sigmoid mesocolon and multiple lipomatosis of the rectosigmoid colon. Report of a case.

Liposarcoma is the second most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults. These neoplasms take their origin from primitive mesenchymal cells and are rarely encountered in fat rich areas, such as subcutaneous tissue and/or the subserosa of the intestinal tract which, on the contrary, are the two most common sites of lipomas. The two major locations of liposarcomas are the extremities and the retroperitoneum followed with much less frequency by the inguinal region. Other sites are uncommon, particularly the mesentery (9 cases to date in the literature) and, even more so, the mesocolon (only 3 cases o

Acute colonic obstruction caused by intussusception and extrusion of a sigmoid lipoma through the anus after barium enema.

Colonic lipomas are often asymptomatic, but large lipomas may produce abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhage, and intussusception. We report a young woman with a colonic lipoma who presented as an acute abdominal emergency with total colonic obstruction and severe pain associated with intussusception and extrusion of the tumor through the anus. The case was interesting because of its presentation after a double-contrast barium enema and because of the patient's young age and the tumor's location on the left side of the colon.

Effects of deoxycholic acid and butyrate on mucosal prostaglandin E2 release and cell proliferation in the human sigmoid colon.

BACKGROUND: A high-fat, low-fiber diet resulting in increased excretion of fecal secondary bile acids is regarded as a major risk factor for colon cancer. Incubation of human colonic biopsies with the secondary bile acid deoxycholic acid (DCA) leads to hyperproliferation with expansion of the proliferative zone, ie, a biomarker of increased cancer risk. Antiproliferative effects on various colon cancer cell lines, however, were reported for butyrate (BUT), a fermentation product of dietary fiber. METHODS: In the following in vitro study we incubated biopsies from the normal sigmoid colon of 1

Endotoxaemia, the generation of the cytokines and their relationship to intramucosal acidosis of the sigmoid colon in elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Ischaemia of the large bowel occasionally occurs following abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and may lead to multiple system organ failure (MSOF). Intramucosal acidosis of the sigmoid colon is a good indicator of sigmoid colonic ischaemia. Intramucosal pH of the sigmoid colon was measured using the silicone tonometer in 21 patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysmectomy. Samples were taken for plasma endotoxin, tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) measurements preoperatively, half-hourly during the operation, 2-hourly for the next 12 h, 4-hourly for a further 48 h and 8-hou

Epidemiology of polyps in the rectum and sigmoid colon. Discriminant analysis for identification of individuals at risk of developing colorectal neoplasia.

In an endoscopic population screening examination for detection of colorectal polyps among 324 men and women aged 50-59 years, adenomas greater than or equal to 5 mm in diameter were found in 38 individuals, and 212 were polyp-free. Dietary registration was performed by 155 individuals on a case/control basis. At 2 years' follow-up study polyps less than 5 mm in diameter were also removed. This rendered a total of 39 adenoma patients and 59 polyp-free individuals available for a combined analysis of both case history and dietary information. Possible association of pyogenic liver abscess with an inflamed sigmoid colonic lipoma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a severe infectious condition that is often associated with an identifiable biliary or gastrointestinal source. Benign colonic lesions are rarely considered during the etiological evaluation of PLA. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old man admitted with febrile diarrhea. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated confluent hepatic abscesses involving segments II, III, and IV, measuring 10 cm × 9 cm × 7 cm, without a CT-detectable biliary source. The etiological investigation identified an approximately 2 cm inflammator
