Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Producing Infiltrating Urothelial Carcinoma of the Left Renal Pelvis: A Case Report.

We report a case of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) producing infiltrating urothelial carcinoma of the left renal pelvis. The patient was referred to our hospital for fever and anorexia. Blood tests showed elevated level of leukocytosis without any infectious diseases. The serum concentration of G-CSF was remarkably elevated. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a huge mass in the left renal pelvis and para-aortic lymph node enlargement. He was underwent left nephroureterectomy and para-aortic lymphadenectomy. The histological examination revealed infiltrating urothelial c

MicroRNA-200c and microRNA-31 regulate proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion in serous ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Serous epithelial ovarian cancer (SEOC) is a highly metastatic disease and its progression has been implicated with microRNAs. This study aimed to identify the differentially expressed microRNAs in Malaysian patients with SEOC and examine the microRNAs functional roles in SEOC cells. METHODS: Twenty-two SEOC and twenty-two normal samples were subjected to miRNA expression profiling using the locked nucleic acid (LNA) quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The localization of miR-200c was determined via LNA in situ hybridization (ISH). Functional analysis of miR-200c and miR-31 on cell

Cells with surface expression of CD133highCD71low are enriched for tripotent colony-forming progenitor cells in the adult murine pancreas.

Progenitor cells in the adult pancreas are potential sources of endocrine beta cells for treating type 1 diabetes. Previously, we identified tri-potent progenitor cells in the adult (2-4month-old) murine pancreas that were capable of self-renewal and differentiation into duct, acinar, and endocrine cells in vitro. These progenitor cells were named pancreatic colony-forming units (PCFUs). However, because PCFUs are a minor population in the pancreas (~1%) they are difficult to study. To enrich PCFUs, strategies using cell-surface marker analyses and fluorescence-activated cell sorting were deve

Severe neutropenia in children after renal transplantation: incidence, course, and treatment with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

BACKGROUND: Infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients. Neutrophils play a crucial role in the initial host defense against bacterial pathogens. Neutropenia is not uncommon after renal transplantation in adults; however, there are scarce published data in children. We conducted a historical cohort study to evaluate the incidence, clinical course, and management of severe neutropenia after renal transplantation in children. METHODS: In a single-center study, we collected clinical and laboratory data on all children (<20 years) who underwen

Purification of Helicobacter suis Strains From Biphasic Cultures by Single Colony Isolation: Influence on Strain Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter (H.) suis causes gastritis and decreased weight gain in pigs. It is also the most prevalent non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species in humans with gastric disease. H. suis is extremely fastidious, and so far, biphasic culture conditions were essential for isolation and culture, making it impossible to obtain single colonies. Hence, cultures obtained from an individual animal may contain multiple H. suis strains, which is undesirable for experiments aiming for instance at investigating H. suis strain differences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pure cultures of H. suis wer

Sarcoptic mange in captive maras: the first known outbreak and complete recovery with colony-wide acaricide treatment.

Among 16 maras housed as a colony at a zoo, 2 initially showed generalized dermal lesions on the legs, head and abdomen. Approximately 1 month later, following completion of therapy with amitraz, 6 maras in the same colony, including the 2 previously diseased animals, showed dermal lesions with severe alopecia and crusting. Sarcoptic mange was diagnosed on skin scrapings on the basis of morphological criteria. The mites were highly mobile and abundant in all cases, and no other causative agents were detected. Colony-wide treatment with ivermectin and prednisolone was administered weekly for a

The efficiency of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in hemorrhagic mucositis and febrile neutropenia resulted from methotrexate toxicity.

Methotrexate (MTX) remains one of the most frequently used anti-metabolite agents in dermatology. MTX is an analog of folate that competitively and irreversibly inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. Oral mucositis is a common side effect of chemotherapy drugs and is characterized by erythema, pain, poor oral intake, pseudomembranous destruction, open ulceration and hemorrhage of the oral mucosa. In this paper, we report a 32-year-old female with a case of mucositis due to MTX intoxication that resulted from an overdose for rheumatoid arthritis. The patient had abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea.

Stem cell factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor exhibit therapeutic effects in a mouse model of CADASIL.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), a Notch3 dominant mutation-induced cerebral small vascular disease, is characterized by progressive degeneration of vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) of small arteries in the brain, leading to recurrent ischemic stroke, vascular dementia and death. To date, no treatment can stop or delay the progression of this disease. Herein, we determined the therapeutic effects of stem cell factor (SCF) in combination with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (SCF+G-CSF) in a mouse model of CAD

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor ameliorates coronary artery elastin breakdown in a mouse model of Kawasaki disease.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery damage from Kawasaki disease (KD) is closely linked to the dysfunction of the endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the modulatory effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) on EPCs and elastin breakdown of coronary arteries in a KD mouse model. METHODS: A Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE)-induced KD model was established in C57BL/6 mice that were subsequently administrated with recombinant human G-CSF (rhG-CSF). Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) was administrated for the negative intervent

Risk factors associated with the presence of Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies from east-central Argentina.

Varroa destructor is considered one of the major threats for worldwide apiculture. Damage caused by varroa mite includes body weight loss, malformation and weakening of the bees. It was also suggested as the main cause associated with colony winter mortality and as an important vector for several honey bee viruses. Little is known about multiple factors and their interaction affecting V. destructor prevalence in apiaries from South America. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with V. destructor prevalence in east-central Argentina. Parasitic mite infestation level and

Treponemal infection in Peru's Early Colonial period: A case of complex lesion patterning and unusual funerary treatment.

This study describes a series of skeletal lesions observed in a mid 16th century individual of an old adult female from the Early Colonial Period of northern coastal Peru. This fragmented skeleton revealed evidence of complex, active, and systemic chronic infection that included multiple pathological foci on the cranial vault, extensive pathological new bone formation in both arms, the sternum, ribs, left scapula, clavicles, femora, and fibulae, which was paralleled by extensive endosteal obliteration of affected long bone medullary cavities. Differential diagnosis included hematogenous osteom

A novel combinatorial therapy with pulp stem cells and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for total pulp regeneration.

Treatment of deep caries with pulpitis is a major challenge in dentistry. Stem cell therapy represents a potential strategy to regenerate the dentin-pulp complex, enabling conservation and restoration of teeth. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of pulp stem cell transplantation as a prelude for the impending clinical trials. Clinical-grade pulp stem cells were isolated and expanded according to good manufacturing practice conditions. The absence of contamination, abnormalities/aberrations in karyotype, and tumor formation after transplantation in an immunodefici

Staphylococcus aureus small-colony variants are independently associated with worse lung disease in children with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is associated with diverse bacteria chronically infecting the airways. Slow-growing, antibiotic-resistant mutants of Staphylococcus aureus known as small-colony variants (SCVs) have been isolated from respiratory secretions from European adults and children with CF lung disease using specific but infrequently used culture techniques. Staphylococcus aureus SCVs can be selected either by exposure to specific antibiotics or by growth with another CF pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We sought to determine the prevalence, clinical significance, and lik

[Tips on the use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors in cancer patients predisposed to chemotherapy - induced febrile neutropenia].

Chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia(FN)is a major risk factor for severe infections, with a dose-limiting toxicity that necessitates dose reductions and/or delays in scheduled chemotherapy sessions. Therefore, the use of granulocyte colony- stimulating factors(G-CSF)is recommended in cancer patients at a risk of chemotherapy-induced FN. Three types of GCSF, filgrastim, lenograstim, and nartograstim, have been available thus far. The differences in potency and efficacy among these G-CSF needs to be thoroughly understood. Prophylactic G-CSF is recommended in patients receiving a chemotherap

Antibiotic activity against small-colony variants of Staphylococcus aureus: review of in vitro, animal and clinical data.

The pathogen Staphylococcus aureus uses various strategies for persisting in the host, among which switching to a small-colony variant (SCV) phenotype is of particular biological and therapeutic significance. Phenotypically, SCVs are characterized by a slow growth rate, atypical colony morphology and unusual biochemical features, constituting a real challenge for identification by the clinical microbiology laboratory. Their metabolic defects also alter their susceptibility to antibiotics, which, combined with the ability to survive intracellularly and, for some strains, to form biofilms, large

Screening alternative therapies to control Nosemosis type C in honey bee (Apis mellifera iberiensis) colonies.

Nosemosis type C caused by the microsporidium Nosema ceranae is one of the most widespread of the adult honey bee diseases, and due to its detrimental effects on both strength and productivity of honey bee colonies, an appropriate control of this disease is advisable. Fumagillin is the only veterinary medicament recommended by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) to suppress infections by Nosema, but the use of this antibiotic is prohibited in the European Union and few alternatives are available at present to control the disease. In the present study three therapeutic agents (Nosest

The synergistic therapeutic effect of hepatocyte growth factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on pulmonary hypertension in rats.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by a progressive increase in pulmonary arterial pressure and vascular resistance. Despite advances in therapy for PAH, its treatment and prognosis remain poor. We aimed to investigate whether the transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) overexpressing hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), alone or in combination with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), attenuates the development of experimental monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH. Three weeks after MCT administration, rats were divided into the following groups: (1) un
