The time course of humoral immune response to Paragonimus siamensis was studied in 10 cats experimentally infected with either 30 or 60 matacercariae and the antibody produced was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), complement fixation test (CFT), and immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) test. With ELISA and CFT, antibodies was detected as early as 2nd week after infection and the cats remained positive throughout the 12 week period of observation. The biological properties of Rickettsia prowazekii were found to change in the course of long-term persistence in infected cotton rats. The persistent rickettsial populations proved to be heterogeneous with respect to several biological characters. Along with populations possessing typical biological properties, lines of R. prowazekii with lowered antigenicity and virulence and lost ability to be passed in animals were obtained. In the serological (CFT) examination of patients with elevated temperature for Q fever positive results were obtained in 8.2--14% of cases. The number of positive results of the CFT in rural districts was higher (16%) than in urban districts (10.2%). A considerable percentage of positive results was observed among the workers of a meat-packing plant (25%) and among persons who regularly received milk at their work as a special diet (25--39.2%). In the Mordovian ASSR the infection seemed to be transmitted mainly by the alimentary and contact ways.

Fifteen to twenty percent of patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) have positive latex fixation tests (LFT), whereas approximately 46% have previously been demonstrated to have hidden rheumatoid factors (RF), i.e., 19S IgM RF which can be detected by the LFT after acid separation of the IgM-containing fraction from serum. In this study, hidden RF were found in 59% of patients with seronegative JRA by use of a complement-dependent hemolytic assay.
