Childhood anxiety sensitivity index factors predict unique variance in DSM-IV anxiety disorder symptoms.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is an established cognitive risk factor for anxiety disorders. In children and adolescents, AS is usually measured with the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI). Factor analytic studies suggest that the CASI is comprised of 3 lower-order factors pertaining to Physical, Psychological and Social Concerns. There has been little research on the validity of these lower-order factors. We examined the concurrent and incremental validity of the CASI and its lower-order factors in a non-clinical sample of 349 children and adolescents. CASI scores predicted symptoms of DSM

Neural Reinforcement Learning Signals Predict Recovery From Impulse Control Disorder Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease are associated with a heavy burden on patients and caretakers. While recovery can occur, ICDs persist in many patients despite optimal management. The basis for this interindividual variability in recovery is unclear and poses a major challenge to personalized health care. METHODS: We adopted a computational psychiatry approach and leveraged the longitudinal, prospective Personalized Parkinson Project (136 people with Parkinson's disease, within 5 years of diagnosis) to combine dopaminergic learning theory-informed functional

Obsessions and compulsions: dimensional structure, reliability, convergent and divergent validity of the Padua Inventory.

This study presents data on dimensional structure, reliability, convergent and divergent validity of the Padua Inventory (PI). In a sample (n = 430) of normal Dutch subjects. The dimensional structure and the strength of the factors were comparable to those found in the Italian sample. The reliability of the PI was found to be satisfactory. As hypothesized substantial correlations were found between the PI and related scales of the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) and between the PI and the subscales Sensitivity, Hostility and Depression of the revised version of the Symptom Chec

Coexisting obsessive compulsive disorder and alcoholism.

Fifty patients with the diagnosis of alcohol dependence or abuse who were admitted to a university-based alcohol rehabilitation program were screened for obsessions and compulsions. Six percent (3) of the patients met DSM-III-R criteria for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which is three times the lifetime prevalence for OCD found in the general population. The diagnosis of OCD is easily overlooked, so screening questions should be asked of all alcoholics during the routine clinical interview. Identifying those patients with dual diagnoses is important because treatment of the underlying O

Comparative Analysis of Food Addiction and Obesity: A Critical Review.

Compulsive ingestion of tasty foods is a characteristic of food addiction (FA), a debated but increasingly recognized disorder that shares neurological features with drug-use disorders. This review examines the overlapping processes between FA and obesity, with a focus on the opioid and dopamine reward systems. Sweet, fatty, and salty processed foods dominate our brain pathways, making them increasingly less able to feel full and urge us to eat more than we require. While the diagnosis remains controversial, the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) is the most widely used assessment instrument. Po

An exploration of economic reasoning in hoarding disorder patients.

Current models of hoarding disorder (HD) emphasize problems of decision-making. Evidence for neuropsychological impairment in HD, however, has been mixed. The present study examined whether HD patients show problems of economic reasoning that could be associated with decision-making problems. Forty-two HD patients, 29 obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, and 36 healthy control participants completed the Iowa gambling task (IGT), a computerized card playing game that assesses participants' ability to learn and utilize a rule of sacrificing short-term gain for long-term gain, and a cogn

Involuntary autobiographical memories as a transdiagnostic factor in mental disorders.

Involuntary autobiographical memories are memories of personal events that come to mind with no preceding retrieval attempts. They have been studied broadly in autobiographical memory for decades and shown to be common and mostly positive in everyday life. Clinical literature has focused on negative intrusive memories of stressful events and tended to neglect other forms of involuntary autobiographical memories. However, recently, there has been an upsurge of research addressing involuntary memories more broadly in clinical disorders, including both stressful and mundane memories, and both rea

A systematic review of dysfunctional thoughts, feelings and phobias of children and adolescents with autism. Solutions and therapeutic methods.

Background: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience symptoms of various mental disorders along with the characteristics that define ASD. High rates of several psychiatric disorders have been reported in people with ASD such as anxiety, depression, cognitive problems, emotional regulation difficulties and related behavioral problems can occur in children of all ages with ASD. There are many treatment programs that can help autistic persons cope with these symptoms. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and mo

The association of changes in repetitive negative thinking with changes in depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a common feature of different mental disorders in the affective spectrum. Most measures of RNT are disorder-specific and measure e.g. rumination in depression or worry in anxiety. METHODS: In the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), 1820 adults completed the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire to assess content-independent RNT over a 3-year follow-up period. We investigated the relative stability of content-independent RNT (Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire), over time as well as the association between changes in RNT and c

Association Between Unemployment and Mental Disorders: A Narrative Update of the Literature.

The relationship between unemployment and mental disorders has been a significant subject of study since at least the Industrial Revolution. However, most data show associations of unemployment and isolated mental disorders, and this study field has been neglected in the last years. Therefore, this narrative review aims to provide an updated overview of the association between unemployment and mental health in general as well as the most prevalent mental disorders. A literature search was conducted using PubMed with the initial search terms "unemployment" and "mental health". The identified di

Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Health Outcomes Among Hispanic Women in the United States: A Scoping Review.

Hispanic women in the United States experience disproportionate mental health impacts of intimate partner violence (IPV). Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews guidelines, we synthesized the existing knowledge based on IPV and mental health outcomes among Hispanic women in the United States. In May 2020, we searched five electronic databases (i.e., MEDLINE, PILOTS, PSYCInfo, PSYCArticles, and EMBASE). From the initial 1,180 results, 13 articles met inclusion criteria for this review (written in English, empirical study, f

Electrophysiological responses to emotional and cocaine cues reveal individual neuroaffective profiles in cocaine users.

Smokers with stronger neuroaffective responses to drug-related cues compared to nondrug-related pleasant images (C > P) are more vulnerable to compulsive smoking than individuals with the opposite brain reactivity profile (P > C). However, it is unknown if these neurobehavioral profiles exist in individuals abusing other drugs. We tested whether individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD) show similar neuroaffective profiles to smokers. We also monitored eye movements to assess attentional bias toward cues and we further performed exploratory analyses on demographics, personality, and drug use

Recent Advances in Pharmacological Management of Autism: A Narrative Review.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a highly heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions defined by impairments in social communication, reciprocal interaction, and the presence of restricted or repetitive behaviors. While its "spectrum" nature highlights variability in symptom severity and presentation, ASD often coexists with conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, epilepsy, digestive, metabolic, and immune disorders. No pharmacological treatments currently address the core deficits of ASD; instead, behavioral and educational interventions remain

Diurnal variation in anxiety and activity is influenced by chronotype and probable anxiety-related disorder status.

Anxiety symptoms vary moment-to-moment within a day. One factor that may influence these variations is chronotype. Evening chronotypes prefer to engage in activities (e.g., sleep, physical and social activity) later in the day, and evening chronotype is implicated in psychopathology, including anxiety-related disorders. However, it is unknown whether chronotype influences diurnal variation in anxiety symptoms and whether these effects are amplified in individuals with a probable anxiety-related disorder. We examined the diurnal variation in anxiety symptoms and daily activities in morning and

Anxiety-related Symptoms following the Sporadic Use of Ecstasy - A Case Study.

3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA/"ecstasy") is widespread in the electronic club scene, but MDMA has also been suggested for the treatment of anxiety spectrum disorders like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety in autistic adults. Here, we report a case of a high functioning 24-old student with a sporadic recreational use of ecstasy, and a history of a single episode of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A few days after using ecstasy during a period of stressful life events, he developed a complex depersonalization/derealization syndrome (DDS) including intermitten

Bridging the ICD11 and the DSM-5 personality disorders classification systems: The role of the PID5BF + M.

INTRODUCTION: In both the ICD-11 Classification of Personality Disorders and the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) personality disorders (PD) are characterized by impairments in self- and interpersonal functioning which distinguish the various levels of dysfunction. Moreover, pathological traits are used by these classification systems to define the stylistic expression of personality dysfunction. Negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism/dissociality, and disinhibition feature as trait domains in each of these models. However, there are also differences between the tw

The role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in the psychopathological profile of children with chronic tic disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The study examines the role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) as a part of the psychopathology of children with chronic tic disorders (CTD) and/or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: We assessed the psychopathology of four large patient groups without further psychiatric disorders: CTD (n = 112), CTD + ADHD (n = 82), ADHD (n = 129), and controls (n = 144)) by implementing the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). We compared the main effects for CTD and ADHD with and without including OCS as covariates. RESULTS: Including OCS led to substantially different mai

False memory and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The memory deficit hypothesis has been used to explain the maintenance of repetitive behavior in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder, yet the majority of studies focusing on verbal memory show mixed results. These studies primarily evaluated memory accuracy via the inclusion or omission of previously encountered material, as opposed to false recognition (i.e., the inclusion of erroneous material). We evaluated false memories and memory processes in individuals with obsessive-compulsive washing symptoms (OC), individuals matched on depression and anxiety without OC sympto
