INTRODUCTION: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a seasonally recurring, bilateral inflammation of the conjunctiva, that occurs in male children with invariable personal or family history of atopy. It is characterized by interstitial inflammation of the cornea and can have sight-threatening complications if not treated in time. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of vernal keratoconjunctivitis among patients presenting to the outpatient department of ophthalmology of a tertiary care centre.
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among patients presenting to

PURPOSE: To systematically review the literature on the treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in children and young adults and conduct comparative efficacy analysis on clinical signs and symptoms using network meta-analyses.
METHODS: We systematically searched the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central and Web of Science on 21 October 2019 for randomized controlled trials (RCT). Studies considered had patients with VKC < 20 years of age randomized into either intervention (any medical intervention) or comparator (active treatment, placebo treatment or non-treatment contro

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe allergic inflammatory disease affecting the conjunctiva in children and young adults. Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive corneal disease characterized by thinning of the corneal stroma, increased and asymmetric corneal curvature, with a potential for significant visual deterioration and is one of the most common corneal complications of VKC. We aimed to review the association of these two diseases, with focus on the mechanisms, prevalence, natural history and treatment strategies of KC associated with VKC.
RECENT FINDINGS: KC is

BACKGROUND: Data on the sensitization pattern and clinical characteristics of pediatric vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) are scary in Central Africa. This chronic form of allergic conjunctivitis affects the quality of school life and work productivity. There is no study that shows the breadth of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in our setting.
PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics of vernal keratoconjunctivitis in Kinshasa, to evaluate the sensitization profile and associated factors.
UNLABELLED: A total of 400 children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis underwent a clinical examinatio

INTRODUCTION: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic recurrent allergic disorder of the eye more common in warm and dry climates like central India. Chronic and recurrent nature of disease requires long duration of treatment which leads to changes in ocular surface leading to cytomorphological distortion of goblet cells, that can be evaluated by impression cytology. Clinical presentation and impact of disease on cytomorphology of ocular surface was analysed in various forms of the VKC. The objective of this study was to find correlation of clinical profile and cytomorphological changes

AIMS: To investigate the risk of corneal ulcer in patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC).
METHODS: The nationwide, population-based, retrospective, matched cohort study included 171 019 newly diagnosed patients with AKC who were identified by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), code 372.05, and selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The age-, sex- and potential comorbidities-matched control group included 171 019 patients with non-AKC selected from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Datab

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic and often severe bilateral conjunctivitis. VKC etiology still remains unclear although endocrine, genetic, neurogenic and environmental factors have been implicated. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble prohormone whose main function is the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum vitamin D in children affected by VKC compared to the healthy children and investigate the relationship between its levels and disease severity.
METHODS: A total of 110 children, 47 affected by VKC, aged between 5 and

It is proved that chronic ocular surface inflammatory disease (including allergic blepharitis, recurrent chalyazia, punctuate keratitis, recurrent herpetic corneal erosions, late stages of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis, etc.) takes part in the development of secondary dry eye syndrome (DES). However, therapies for inflammation-induced impairment of tear production do not provide long-term control of inflammatory process. Cyclosporine 0.05% eye drops are an option. Their effect is well-studied in foreign practice. Local application experience of cyclosporine 0.05% eye drops was summarized at

We present the case of a 45-year-old patient with severe atopic disease and keratoconus who suffered from corneal melting following cross-linking and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) due to subclinical infection with Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Penetrating keratoplasty and intensive antiviral and immunosuppressive medical treatment were necessary to control the infection. The case demonstrates the difficulties in the treatment of keratoconus in patients with severe atopic disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine pattern of clinical presentation in Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in our context.
METHODS: Thirty-four VKC patients were included in this study.
RESULTS: The study revealed prepubertal onset with male preponderance and most frequently encountered symptom in the study among VKC cases was itching (100%) followed by redness of eyes and discharge (76.5% each) and the commonest sign was tarsal papillae (100%) followed by conjunctival hyperemia (91%) in 68 eyes of 34 cases of VKC.
CONCLUSION: The clinical presentation of VKC cases in our country is very much similar to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mast cells and eosinophils are the main effector cells in allergic inflammation, but there is now compelling evidence that fibroblasts are also important players in the inflammatory response. In fact, they respond to different stimuli and release several mediators that modulate mast-cell and eosinophil functionality. In several allergic conditions such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis the chronic presence of the inflammatory process has been associated with fibrosis and tissue remodeling, which in turn could cause irreversible alterations in the o

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there exists immunological or clinical difference between patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis(VKC), which is characterized by conjunctival proliferative changes belonging to the serious spectrum of allergic conjunctival diseases, complicated by atopic dermatitis(AD) and those without AD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 52 patients with VKC (33 patients with AD, 19 without AD). Clinical severity was determined on the basis of clinical scores of conjunctival, corneal, and limbal lesions. The serum level of tot

Ophthalmic drugs, both diagnostic and therapeutic, play a central role in new developments in optometry, particularly as practitioners extend their involvement in primary care. Optometrists now dilate more patients in routine practice, and this brings increasing concern about the risk of provoking acute closed angle glaucoma (CAG) attacks. It would seem that the risk of inducing acute CAG is far outweighed by the potential benefit of examining the eye through a dilated pupil. Driving difficulties, reported subjectively to be the result of glare, are frequently encountered by patients after dil

In a 55-year-old patient with Lyell syndrome, a ligneous conjunctivitis is present at the right eye. The histological examination of the hyperplasic conjunctiva shows a pluri-stratified epithelium made up of several rows of cells with a marked intra- and intercellular oedema. The connective subepithelial tissue shows an important inflammatory infiltration with numerous hyaline plates characteristic of the disease. The vessels are dilated, with thin walls, permitting the passage of fibrin to the surface. The ligneous conjunctivitis is interpreted as a post-membranous granuloma of the palpebral
