Evaluation of Central Sensitisation in Bladder Pain Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by exaggerated bladder sensations and altered bladder function. It is still unknown whether the condition is a peripheral sensory problem or due to abnormal central sensory processing as seen in central sensitisation. This systematic review, which followed a published and Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews-registered protocol (CRD42021229962), is aimed at establishing the scope of central sensitisation in patients with BPS to aid optimal management and treatment. METHODS: Four databases

Advances in the methods for discovering novel painful bladder syndrome therapies.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in the treatment of interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) depend on a good understanding of its pathogenesis. Presently, oral medicine and intravesical drug instillations may be the most popular therapies in daily practice. To improve the efficacy of intravesical drug delivery, the system requires modulation through coupling them to novel carriers. Numerous investigators have attempted alternative reconstructive procedures for bladder replacement/repair using scaffolds. These scaffolds include acellular extracellular matrix grafts or tissue-derived cell

[Specific treatments for painful bladder syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Painful bladder syndrome is defined as chronic pelvic pain present for more than 6 months, causing discomfort perceived as being related to the bladder and accompanied by a persistent and strong urge to urinate or urinary frequency. The purpose of this article is to review the treatment of painful bladder syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed by searching PUBMED for articles on specific treatments for painful bladder syndrome. RESULTS: Many treatments have been proposed for the management of painful bladder syndrome: local intrav

Sexual dysfunction in patients with painful bladder syndrome.

PURPOSE: The degree of sexual dysfunction in patients with Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) has not been documented previously. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to measure the degree of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The FSFI was administered on-line to female patients with self-reported PBS. This 19-item questionnaire evaluated FSD in six domains: desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. RESULTS: The data was analyzed on an item-for-item basis and by the six domains of sexual dysfunction for 100 patients and compa

Painful Bladder Symptoms Related to Somatic Syndromes in a Convenience Sample of Community Women with Overactive Bladder Symptoms.

PURPOSE: We investigated the relationship of painful bladder filling and urinary urgency to somatic and chronic pain symptoms in women with overactive bladder without an interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Women who met overactive bladder criteria based on symptoms were recruited, including 183 (83.9%) from the community and 35 (16.1%) from the urology clinic to complete validated questionnaires assessing urinary symptoms, somatic symptoms and pain syndromes. Participants were categorized into 1 of 3 groups, including 1) neither symptom, 2) either sym

[Bladder pain syndrome].

BLADDER PAIN SYNDROME. Bladder pain syndrome (BPS), often associated with other pelvic pain syndromes, is defined as perceived chronic pain or discomfort related to the bladder, associated with other urinary symptoms such as pollakiuria or a constant urge to urinate, in the absence of organic pathology. It more often affects women. Assessment is clinical, including a voiding schedule and standardized questionnaires measuring impact on quality of life. The key examination is cystoscopy, under local or general anaesthetic, to rule out the differential diagnosis of bladder tumour and separate VDS

Bladder pain syndrome and sexual function: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS)/interstitial cystitis can adversely affect physical, mental, and sexual health. The aim of the systematic review is to compare sexual function between patients with BPS and healthy controls and to examine whether or not treatment of BPS improves sexual function. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Embase, Medline, and other databases. Studies comparing sexual function in BPS patients with healthy controls and before/after treatment were included. Where appropriate, data were pooled in a meta-analysis, using a random effects mo

[UPOINT phenotypic classification of a sample of female patients with bladder pain syndrome: Results of a national multicentric observational study.].

OBJECTIVES: To study the possibility of classifying patients with BPS by UPOINT phenotypes and their correlation with the results of different BPS diagnostic tools. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Epidemiological, observational, longitudinal and multicentric study performed according to clinical practice. A total of 319 women with BPS were included, 79 with new diagnosis and 240 in follow-up. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected together with results of cystoscopy, biopsy and physical examination. Patients completed a 3-day Bladder Diary (3dBD) and Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs). All the

Feline Idiopathic Cystitis: Pathogenesis, Histopathology and Comparative Potential.

Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a debilitating disease in humans, particularly women, with patients experiencing chronic, intractable, lower urinary and pelvic pain. Although rodent models have been used, feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is a naturally occurring bladder disease of cats that is frequently considered to be the preferred model for BPS. Histologically, FIC is most similar to the non-Hunner BPS subtype. Histology is unnecessary for the clinical diagnosis of FIC but is of great value in elucidating the pathogenesis of this disease so that prevention and therapeutic interventions can

INTRODUCTION: Hydrodistension is an integral part of the diagnostic assessment of painful bladder syndrome but also has a therapeutic effect. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the place of brief and prolonged bladder hydrodistension in the therapeutic management of painful bladder syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed by searching PubMed for articles on bladder hydrodistension in the management of painful bladder syndrome. RESULTS: Brief hydrodistension is performed in the operating room under anaesthesia whenever the

[Intravesical instillations for inflammatory and sensory chronic bladder diseases: Literature review and guide to clinical practice].

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory and sensory chronic bladder diseases have a significant impact on quality of life. These pathologies share alteration of the layer between urine and urothelium, making the use of topical agents appropriate. OBJECTIVES: Review the efficacy and tolerance of intravesical treatments for these pathologies. Give practical guidelines for the use of agents currently available in France. METHOD: A narrative review was performed in March 2021 using PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and the international guidelines. Pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies were interviewed. RESU
