Dogs may develop a syndrome of spontaneous, inflammatory, pruritic dermatitis that shares many features with human atopic dermatitis, including a young age of onset, characteristic lesion distribution, immunoglobulin E sensitization to common environmental allergen sources, and evidence of epidermal barrier dysfunction. There are also several important differences between canine and human atopic dermatitis. Although dogs may suffer from multiple-organ hypersensitivity syndromes, there is no evidence that this species experiences the progressive evolution from cutaneous to respiratory allergy c…

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition in infants, adolescents, and adults. The characteristic symptoms-scaling, erythema, and itching-occur most often on the scalp, face, chest, back, axilla, and groin. Seborrheic dermatitis is a clinical diagnosis based on the location and appearance of the lesions. The skin changes are thought to result from an inflammatory response to a common skin organism, Malassezia yeast. Treatment with antifungal agents such as topical ketoconazole is the mainstay of therapy for seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body. Because of possible adverse effects,…

This article provides an overview of important practice recommendations from the recently updated Contact Dermatitis Practice Parameter. This updated parameter provides essential recommendations pertaining to clinical history, physical examination, and patch testing evaluation of patients suspected of allergic contact dermatitis. In addition to providing guidance for performing and interpreting closed patch testing, the updated parameter provides concrete recommendations for assessing metal hypersensitivity in patients receiving prosthetic devices, for evaluating workers with occupational cont…

Seborrhoeic dermatitis usually starts at puberty with a peak incidence at 40 years of age and is more common in males. Patients develop symmetrical, well demarcated, dull or yellowish red patches and plaques with overlying adherent, yellowish greasy scales. Seborrhoeic dermatitis has a distinctive distribution in areas rich in sebaceous glands - the scalp, eyebrows, glabella, nasolabial and nasofacial folds, cheeks, peri-auricular skin, pre-sternal and interscapular areas. It may occur in flexures, especially the axillae, groin, anogenital skin, infra-mammary skin and the umbilicus. Some patie…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review summarizes recent findings on contact dermatitis in the cleaning industry.
RECENT FINDINGS: Contact dermatitis is still an important issue in cleaning. Recent studies identified cleaning work sites and tasks, as well as specific cleaning products, which incur a risk increase for occupational contact dermatitis in cleaning. Workers involved in cleaning outdoors prevalence ratio [PR 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.16-2.96], cleaning common areas of residential buildings (PR 1.77, 95% CI 1.11-2.84), schools (PR 1.84, 95% CI 1.15-2.93) and cleaning building site…

Protein contact dermatitis is a disease primarily seen in food handlers. The usual presenting finding is hand dermatitis. It is triggered by an IgE-mediated food sensitization, so that after local exposure T cells are recruited and cause the dermatitis. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical features and demonstration of IgE-dependent sensitization, which can also cause contact urticaria and even contact anaphylaxis. We report a case of PCD in a butcher, who could continue his work due to adequate diagnosis and management.

Contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by erythematous and pruritic skin lesions that occur after contact with a foreign substance. There are two forms of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by the non-immune-modulated irritation of the skin by a substance, leading to skin changes. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction in which a foreign substance comes into contact with the skin; skin changes occur after reexposure to the substance. The most common substances that cause contact dermatit…

As the population continues to age, understanding the differences between aged and young skin becomes more important to the clinician. Contact dermatitis is just one of the clinical entities that presents differently in the geriatric population. Reactions can be delayed in onset, and prolonged in duration. These altered presentations are the direct result of the pathophysiologic changes that occur in aging skin. It is especially important to recognize contact dermatitis in this age group, and to treat in a timely fashion.

The multifactorial pathogenesis of dermatitis herpetiformis is reviewed in light of current experimental data. Genetic background, gluten consumption, and abnormal immune and autoimmune reactions are the most important pathogenetic factors, but other agents also participate in the disease development. The predisposing and inducing factors are summarized, while the pathophysiological steps leading to the development of skin symptoms are detailed.

Atopic dermatitis is a common, chronic skin disease characterized by dry, itchy and easily irritated skin. It occurs most commonly in infants and young children, but can persist into adulthood. Severe cases can lead to sleep deprivation, chronic bacterial infections, and depression. Along with other allergic diseases, its prevalence has grown significantly in recent years. Topical medicines are the most common and effective treatment for atopic dermatitis. Drugs taken orally and used to suppress the immune system have been converted into an ointment or cream. These topical immunosuppressive ag…

The diagnosis of eczema and its etiology is mainly based on patient's history and meticulous clinical examination. The careful anamnesis should include all personal and familial signs of atopy and all patient's contacts mainly localised on the eczematous skin. Many investigations may help us to better understanding of this complex problem: blood examination (total IgE, Rast), prick-tests, epicutaneous or patch-tests (PT), semi-open tests (SOT) for potentially irritant products and repeated open application tests (ROAT) made by the patient himself. This tests will never be made systematically b

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study was designed to estimate the frequency of asthma in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), and its related factors.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 236 patients with AD who were referred to Children Medical Center in 1997-2002 and their diagnosis was based on Hanifin & Rajka criteria. Severity of AD was categorized based on Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Asthma was diagnosed with medical history and clinical examination (three or more episodes of wheezing and/or dyspnea and/or cough after 1 year old). The patients were div…
