Using standardized methods for research on HIV and injecting drug use in developing/transitional countries: case study from the WHO Drug Injection Study Phase II.

BACKGROUND: Successful cross-national research requires methods that are both standardized across sites and adaptable to local conditions. We report on the development and implementation of the methodology underlying the survey component of the WHO Drug Injection Study Phase II--a multi-site study of risk behavior and HIV seroprevalence among Injecting Drug Users (IDUs). METHODS: Standardized operational guidelines were developed by the Survey Coordinating Center in collaboration with the WHO Project Officer and participating site Investigators. Throughout the duration of the study, survey im

Advanced Practice Nursing Development Within Diverse Regulatory Landscapes: A Descriptive Survey of European Countries.

AIM: To explore the relationship between professional regulatory systems and advanced practice nursing development in Europe. BACKGROUND: Advanced practice nursing has expanded rapidly, yet regulatory frameworks have often struggled to keep pace with the extended scope of practice demanded by contemporary service delivery. Misalignment leaves new roles inadequately supported, with consequences for both patient safety and the broader transformative potential of the profession. METHODS: For this cross-sectional descriptive study, key informants were recruited by purposive sampling across the W

Analysis of bilateral development assistance for surgery in low- and middle-income countries: trends, challenges and opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains underfunded despite representing a significant portion of the Global Burden of Disease. Understanding bilateral development assistance for surgery is crucial to address this disparity. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review and quantitative analysis of bilateral development assistance for surgery in LMICs from 2014 to 2022 using data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Creditor Reporting System. Surgical projects were identified throug

Development of a collaborative chronic care model for management of cardiometabolic disease in low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) which include cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, hypertension, and other metabolic syndromes represent a significant global health burden. Three quarters of global CVD deaths occur in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) and CMD account for approximately 35 percent of deaths in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region. The COVID-19 Pandemic significantly accelerated the transformation of the landscape in the management of patients with multiple long-term conditions, prompting innovation in healthcare delivery and highlighting the importance of mo

Biomedical research in Alzheimer's disease in a Latin American developing country: challenges in the informed consent process.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a significant global health issue, impacting 50 million individuals with dementia worldwide, a number projected to triple by 2050. Although research has been conducted for decades, there is no effective prevention, treatment, or early diagnostic method for AD. Research on AD in Latin America (LatAm) faces unique challenges compared to developed countries due to socioeconomic, cultural, and infrastructural factors. While the prevalence of dementia is rapidly increasing in LatAm due to demographic shifts, the region is underrepresented in research, diagnostics and car

Safety and morbidity of full-endoscopic lumbar surgery in a developing country: A comparative study of 219 cases.

BACKGROUND: Full-endoscopic lumbar surgery has become an established minimally invasive alternative for treating degenerative disc disease (DDD). However, most published data originate from high-resource settings, and little is known about its morbidity profile in developing countries. This study aimed to characterize the complication patterns and perioperative outcomes of interlaminar and transforaminal lumbar endoscopy performed in a Brazilian reference center. METHODS: A retrospective, consecutive case series of 219 patients who underwent lumbar endoscopy between May 2021 and November 2024…

Development of a Central Sensitization Inventory short form using data from twenty-three countries.

The Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) assesses central sensitization-related symptoms, but its 25-item length may limit its use in large-scale research or routine clinical practice. Therefore, the aim was to develop a short version of the CSI, using a large international sample of 7862 participants across 23 countries. A multi-step Rasch analysis was applied to the 25-item version of the CSI using a training-validation paradigm to identify the subset of items that best fit a unidimensional model. Then, an expert committee reviewed the face-content validity of each item. A 7-item solution w

Validation of the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score and development of a country-specific diabetes prediction model for Turkey.

AIMS: Diabetes is a global health concern, and early identification of high-risk individuals is crucial for preventive interventions. Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) is a widely accepted non-invasive tool that estimates the 10-year diabetes risk. This study aims to validate the FINDRISC in the Turkish population and develop a specific model using data from a nationwide cohort. METHOD: The study used data of 12249 participants from the Türkiye Chronic Diseases and Risk Factors Survey. Data included sociodemographic variables, lifestyle factors, and anthropometric measurements. Multivari

Pharmacists' clinical decision making when responding to a self-medication request for a cough in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have reported that community pharmacies in developing countries, including Indonesia, provided sub-optimal advice when handling patient's self-medication request for cough. The reasons behind such advice, therefore, need to be investigated. OBJECTIVES: To describe Indonesian pharmacists' clinical decision making when handling self-medication cases for a cough. METHODS: An open-ended questionnaire consisting of two cough clinical vignettes (case 1: cough due to asthma worsening and case 2: cough as a symptom of common cold) were developed. Pharmacists were interviewed…

Investing in midwifery for sustainable development goals in low- and middle-income countries: a cost-benefit analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries is frequently caused by inadequate management of obstetric and neonatal complications and a shortage of skilled health workers. The availability of these workers is essential for effective and high-quality healthcare. To meet the needs of sexual, reproductive, maternal, new-born, child, and adolescent health by 2030, more than one million health workers, including 900 000 midwives, are required globally. Despite this, uncertainty persists regarding the return on investment in the health workforce. METHODS: The obj

Soil surveillance for monitoring soil-transmitted helminths: Method development and field testing in three countries.

BACKGROUND: One-fifth of the global population is infected with soil-transmitted helminths (STH). Mass drug administration (MDA) with deworming medication is widely implemented to control morbidity associated with STH infections. However, surveillance of human infection prevalence by collecting individual stool samples is time-consuming, costly, often stigmatized, and logistically challenging. Current methods of STH detection are poorly sensitive, particularly in low-intensity and low-prevalence populations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We aimed to develop a sensitive and specific molecula

Outcomes of Acute Kidney Injury in Patients Requiring Dialysis in a Tertiary Care Hospital of a Developing Country.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis (AKI-D) is an important health care burden and is associated with very high in-hospital mortality. Timely initiation of dialysis in AKI is fundamental to achieve treatment goals and to provide solute clearance and removal of excess fluid while awaiting the recovery of kidney function. The primary outcome of interest of the study was recovery of sufficient kidney function to discontinue haemodialysis therapy and complete recovery of renal function. This prospective observational study has been conducted in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Banglad

Degenerative Lumbar Spine Surgeries Under Regional Anesthesia in a Developing Country: An Initial Case Series.

Introduction Current evidence from developed countries on lumbar spine surgeries under regional anesthesia reports it to be superior to general anesthesia (GA) in terms of decreased anesthesia time, operative time, intraoperative complications such as bleeding, postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and overall cost. We report the first case series from Pakistan on lumbar spine surgeries under regional anesthesia. Methods We utilized spinal anesthesia (SA) for lumbar spine surgeries of 45 patients in a tertiary-care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. The surgeries were performed as
