Thirty-two horses with clinicopathologic evidence of endotoxic shock were randomly selected for a double-blind trial of hyperimmune lipopolysaccharide (LPS) core antigen plasma. Horses were suffering from acute toxic enteritis (n = 15), 360 degrees volvulus of the large colon (n = 9), proximal jejunitis/duodenitis (n = 6), or strangulating obstruction of the small intestine (n = 2). The effect of grenz ray therapy in the treatment of psoriatic nails was assessed in 22 patients by randomly allocating active treatment to the psoriatic nails of one hand while the other one, which received simulated therapy, served as a control. Five Gy of grenz rays were applied on 10 occasions at intervals of 1 week. There was a significantly better response to active treatment compared with the untreated control. However, the therapeutic response was moderate. It is concluded that grenz ray therapy could be useful only when the psoriatic nails are of normal thickness.

The behavioral and physiologic effects of single, intravenous bolus doses of cocaine in 5 male human subjects were correlated with cocaine levels in saliva and blood. A controlled trial has been carried out in order to compare the efficacy of enemas containing a high dosage of 5-ASA (4 g) versus enemas containing hydrocortisone 100 mg. The trial was conducted on 86 patients, 44 of whom received 5-ASA and 42 received hydrocortisone. The results were favorable in terms of clinical, sigmoidoscopic, and histologic criteria for 5-ASA treatment. Other aspects have been investigated, such as retrograde spread of enemas which have been shown to reach the left colon. No nephrotoxicity was detected. The long term experience confirmed the preliminary positive results.

High rates of penetration and of transepidermal water loss in psoriatic lesions allow reduction in the periods of application and occlusion, respectively, in corticoid treatment. The opiate antagonist, naloxone, was used in a double-blind study of endorphin involvement in ethanol intoxication. Naloxone should block the effect of any endorphins released during ethanol intoxication. Responses to acupuncture were studied in 30 patients with acute sciatica. Objective and subjective criteria were analyzed before treatment and after five sessions of acupuncture.
