We performed a case study and intervention study, with follow-up of 1 to 5 years, in 4 children with inner ear malformations who underwent implantation of a multichannel cochlear implant (Nucleus, Cochlear Corporation) at ages 3 to 12 years. Malformations included a common cavity deformity, 2 incomplete partitions, and 1 case of isolated bilateral vestibular aqueduct enlargement. Labyrinthine fistula is a complication of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma. Canal wall down tympanoplasty with partial mastoid cavity obliteration and complete removal of cholesteatoma matrix was adopted in five cases of labyrinthine fistula. The reversible hearing loss in the nonoperated ear noted by patients after ear surgery remains unexplained. This study proposes that this hearing loss is caused by drill noise conducted to the nonoperated ear by vibrations of the intact skull. Ear piercing is a brief, standard, painful stimulus which is submitted to voluntarily, offering a unique opportunity for research on children's anticipation of pain in a naturalistic context. In an effort to reduce this pathology, the surgical procedure considered incorporates the use of a new material which diminishes retraction and allows freer movement of the eardrum. Laser interferometry was used to measure sound-induced umbo velocity in the aging mouse middle ear. Velocity reductions of as much as 8 dB were seen as the mice aged. These functional differences suggest a variety of structural changes that may occur in the aging middle ear.

There are a total of eight sensory organs in the chick inner ear. Each sensory organ has a distinct structure tailored for its function, and its morphology is well characterized. However, the origin of these sensory organs and the lineage relationships among them are largely unknown. This pilot study examined whether the occlusion of one ear canal with cerumen affected the usual temperature difference between the ears as measured with an infrared thermometer. Ear-based temperature measurements were made in 14 elderly nursing home residents before and 3 to 4 days after irrigation to clear cerumen from the occluded ear. To specifically determine the frequency and type of middle ear abnormalities associated with perilymphatic fistula (PLF), a retrospective chart review was performed of 94 patients (117 ears) who underwent exploratory tympanotomy for PLF from 1980 to 1989. A case of successful microvascular replantation of a traumatically amputated ear is presented. The postoperative course was complicated by venous thrombosis requiring the use of medicinal leeches and systemic heparinization for salvage.
