OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and neoplastic progression in hamster with tongue cancer.
METHODS: Forty-eight specimens of hamster tongue cancer were divided into control group (n=6) and experimental group (n=42). The pathological grade of the specimens was assessed (including 3 stages, namely atypical hyperplasia, carcinoma in situ and early invasive carcinoma). The sections of the tongue were stained with Masson and aldehyde-fuchsin (AF) staining for microscopic observation of the elastic fiber and collagen fiber changes.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Elastic sliding centromedullary nailing (ESCN) proposed by Métaizeau in 1987 for the prevention and treatment of limb fractures in osteogenesis imperfecta has never been evaluated. A multicentric serie was studied in order to evaluate results of these procedure.

The aim of the study was to analyze by histochemical, ultrastructural, and morphometric methods the musculoskeletal tissues in three humans affected with Marfan syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution and amount of elastic fibers in the dermis of clinically normal dogs and dogs with dermatoses, particularly solar dermatitis.
DESIGN: Skin specimens from 7 anatomic sites were obtained from 19 clinically normal dogs after euthanasia to evaluate the normal distribution of elastic fibers. Biopsy specimens also were obtained from 34 dogs with dermatoses, including 16 with solar dermatitis. Tissue sections were stained with H&E, Verhoeff-van Gieson, and periodic acid-Schiff.

The membrane elastic shear modulus mu determined by a micropipette technique was found to be elevated by 25% to 200% for red blood cells (RBC) from 7 patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) and 9 patients with pyruvate-kinase (PK) enzymopathies above the mean value for normal controls. Circumscribed defects in the elastic lamina as a possible cause of intracerebral hemorrhage are reported. The abnormality was present in the right middle cerebral artery of a 24-year-old women. The patient died of large intracerebral hemorrhage which extended into the lateral ventricle on the same side and to the subarachnoid space. In the absence of vascular malformation and secondary degenerative changes attributed to hypertension these defects of the internal elastic lamina associated with the rise of the blood pressure appear to lead ultimately to bleeding.
