Enhancing Machine-Learned Electrostatic Models with Linear Response Theory for Multiscale Simulations in Enzymes.

To accelerate computationally expensive quantum mechanical (QM) calculations, integrating machine learning potentials (MLPs) with molecular mechanics (MM) has become a promising approach, which can be employed to perform multiscale ML/MM-MD simulations and estimate reaction free energy for enzymatic catalysis. However, the ML/MM frameworks face the challenge of intuitive chemical interpretability in QM/MM electrostatic coupling, which limits their transferability in unlearned MM environments. Therefore, their practical application in enzyme engineering is hindered by the bottleneck of MLP retr

Study on effective frequency range of wheel-rail excitation for elevated high-speed railway.

The main frequency bands typically considered in studies on the environmental vibration of high-speed railways often neglect high-frequency components, whereas a comprehensive and reliable excitation source is essential for accurately capturing the vibration characteristics of structural components. Using the CRTS III slab ballastless track and a simply supported box girder bridge as examples, this study develops a 3D slab track-viaduct frequency domain analysis model to investigate the vibration transfer characteristics of the track and substructure under wide frequency input excitations. Reaction of protonated tyrosine with electronically excited singlet molecular oxygen (a1Delta(g)): an experimental and trajectory study.

Reaction of protonated tyrosine with the lowest electronically excited singlet state of molecular oxygen, (1)O(2) (a(1)Delta(g)), is reported over the center-of-mass collision energy (E(col)) range from 0.1 to 3.0 eV, using an electrospray-ionization, guided-ion-beam scattering instrument, in conjunction with ab initio electronic structure calculations and direct dynamics trajectory simulations. Only one product channel is observed, corresponding to generation of hydrogen peroxide via transfer of two hydrogen atoms from protonated tyrosine. Despite being exoergic, the reaction is in competitio

Tuning the high-energy state of Fe-GLC via high salinity stacking effect for ECs spontaneous destruction in waters.

Achieving cost-effective removal of organic contaminants in saline wastewater remains a persistent global challenge. Current advanced oxidation processes based on reactive oxygen species suffer from unsatisfactory efficiency and substantial energy demands. Herein, we synthesized a Fe coordinated chlorapatite (CAP)-doped graphene-like structure catalyst (Fe-GLC) with cation-π interactions. Fe-GLC exhibited high efficiency and stability for various emerging contaminants (ECs) degradation without additional energy input, and even achieved 100% removal for BPA in municipal wastewater and high-sali

Computationally tailoring the adsorption behavior of ZrSe2 for SF6 decomposition species in GIS: Mechanistic insights into Cu2O/Ag2O functionalization.

Serving as an essential insulating gas, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is applied in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and exerts a key effect on insulation and arc suppression. When the electrical and mechanical breakdowns occurred, SF6 decomposition can lead to the formation of H2S, SO2, SO2F2, and SOF2. Adsorption effect of transition-metal oxides modified ZrSe2, including Cu2O-ZrSe2 and Ag2O-ZrSe2 towards sensing gases during SF6 decomposition in this study was analyzed using the first-principles simulation. The optimized structures were determined, presenting advantages over initial ZrSe2 contai

Light-Driven Out-of-Equilibrium Helicity Control in a Diarylethene-Helicene Photosystem.

Molecular photoswitches are key tools to control responsive functions and to drive systems away from equilibrium by enabling kinetic asymmetry and energy ratchet mechanisms. Incorporating dynamic chirality control within such non-equilibrium frameworks, however, remains challenging. Here, the responsive behavior of a diarylethene-[5]helicene photoswitch comprising multiple interconverting diastereomers is investigated. Distinct energy profiles govern the helicity dynamics in the open and closed forms of the switch. While helix inversion in the open state is kinetically hindered by a high energ

First-principles calculation of adsorption of cadmium and lead on the surface of a 1T-MnO2 monolayer.

Manganese dioxide is a material with varied and interesting applications, especially including energy storage, the elimination of organic contaminants, and the removal of toxic atoms and molecules that pollute the environment. In this paper, the adsorption of toxic atoms of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on the surface of a 1T-MnO2 monolayer is investigated using first-principles calculations. The calculated values of the adsorption energy show that the most energetically favorable site for the Cd and Pb atoms is PMn. This occurs when a Cd or Pb atom is located just above a Mn atom, with adsorptio

Regulation of surface-bound radicals enhanced Fenton-like activities via radicals confined on Fe3O4/MXenes.

The low yield and efficiency of surface-bound radicals seriously affect the Fenton-like activity of the catalyst. In this study, novel Fe3O4/MXenes (V2C and Ti3C2) composites are designed for structural domain regulation of surface-bound radicals. The MXenes with multilayer structure enhance the adsorption energy and electron transfer of the Fe3O4/peroxodisulfate (PDS) system. In the Fe3O4/V2C and Fe3O4/Ti3C2 systems, the adsorption energies of PDS at Fe sites are 8.27 and 4.36 eV, the electron transfer amounts are 0.303 and 0.115 e, and the lengths of the OO bond on PDS adsorbed are 2.965 and

An Experimental Study on the Thermomechanical Coupling Effects of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone under Dynamic Impact.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites are widely utilized in aerospace, medical devices, and automotive industries, renowned for their superior mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance. Despite these advantages, the thermomechanical coupling behavior of CF/PEEK under dynamic loading conditions is not well understood. This study aims to explore the thermomechanical coupling effects of CF/PEEK at elevated strain rates, employing Hopkinson bar impact tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for detailed characterization. Our findings indicate that an i

A new generation of effective core potentials: Selected lanthanides and heavy elements II.

We present a new set of correlation-consistent effective core potentials (ccECPs) for selected heavy s, p, d, and f-block elements significant in materials science and chemistry (Rb, Sr, Cs, Ba, In, Sb, Pb, Ru, Cd, La, Ce, and Eu). The ccECPs are designed using minimal Gaussian parameterization to achieve smooth and bounded potentials. They are expressed as a combination of averaged relativistic effective potentials (AREPs) and effective spin-orbit terms, developed within a relativistic coupled-cluster framework. The optimization is driven by correlated all-electron (AE) atomic spectra, norm-c

Leveraging Cross-Diversity Machine Learning to Unveil Metal-Organic Frameworks with Open Copper Sites for Biogas Upgrading.

Biogas, primarily composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), is considered an alternative renewable energy resource. Efficient CO2/CH4 separation is essential for biogas upgrading to increase energy density, and in this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated significant potential. Here, we integrate multiscale modeling with cross-diversity machine learning (ML) to unveil MOFs with open copper sites (OCS-MOFs) that exhibit exceptional CO2/CH4 separation performance. Our focus on diversity-adaptable ML guarantees that ML models trained in one chemical space are rigor

Effect of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron-activated periodate on bacterial inactivation and conjugative gene transfer.

Abuse of antibiotics can cause a serious global issue of antibiotic resistance (AR). This research studied the efficiency of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI)-activated periodate toward the inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with E. coli strains HB101 (carrying the RP4 plasmid) and NK5449 as the donor and recipient, respectively. In comparison to the control group (without treatment with S-nZVI/PI), the ARG conjugative transfer frequency within 24 h decreased from 6.3 × 10-4 to 6.6 × 10-5 after tr

Convex, Real-Time Koopman Model Predictive Control of Activated-Sludge Aeration: Constraint-Aware Operation With an Explicit Energy-Nitrous-Oxide Operating Frontier.

Aeration is the largest energy consumer in activated-sludge treatment and a principal control over nitrous oxide (N2O), a dominant contributor to a plant's carbon footprint, while effluent limits remain nonnegotiable. This paper develops a convex Koopman-operator model predictive controller (MPC) for that three-way trade-off. Extended dynamic mode decomposition identifies a linear predictor of the nonlinear process, N2O included; successive linear programming reduces each control step to a strictly convex quadratic program with explicit ammonia and total-nitrogen constraints, an offset-free co

BSr3 Superalkali as a Promising Catalyst for Ambient Nitrogen Reduction: A Pathway toward Efficient Ammonia Synthesis.

The transformation of the earth-abundant dinitrogen molecule (N2) into ammonia (NH3) under mild conditions remains a fundamental challenge in chemistry. The BSr3 superatom designed in our previous work (Wiszowska N, Rogoża N, Sikorska C, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. (2025), 27: 23468-23486) has been used as a catalyst for the conversion of molecular nitrogen into ammonia. Owing to its low ionization energy (4.033 eV), the BSr3 transfers electron density to adsorbed N2, partially populating antibonding π* orbitals, lowering the triple NN bond order and initiating N-N bond elongation. Subsequent pro

Environmental impact of portable MRI in remote Canadian settings.

BACKGROUND: Patients in remote communities often lack access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), necessitating long-distance transfers to tertiary centres for neuroimaging. Portable MRI (pMRI) addresses this gap by enabling bedside imaging without conventional scanner infrastructure. Its environmental profile, including energy consumption, patient transportation, and waste generation, compared with fixed MRI systems has not been comprehensively quantified in the literature. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods analysis of an ultra-low-field pMRI scanner, focusing on three domains: (i) energ
