Engineering and Exploring Hydrolytic Degradation in 3D-Printed Liquid Crystalline Elastomers.

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are being increasingly explored as biomaterials; however, many LCE properties were not designed with biomedical use in mind. Here, we examine LCE hydrolytic degradation, including investigating approaches to accelerate degradation and whether thermal and mechanical properties change with degradation. Among 3D-printable LCE chemistries, we find that networks formed via thiol-Michael addition followed by thiol-ene photo-cross-linking degrade most rapidly. The integration of hydrophilic chain extenders (e.g., PEG) accelerates LCE degradation and demonstrates t

[Teaching practice of anaerobic digestion microorganisms in Microbiology for Environmental Engineering].

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which organic matter is converted into methane and carbon dioxide through the catalysis of bacteria and archaea under anaerobic conditions. It is of great significance for the natural material cycle and sustainable development. Currently, textbooks of Microbiology for Environmental Engineering provide little information on the functional microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion. As a result, students have a limited understanding of the complexity and applications of anaerobic microorganisms. To address this issue, we carried out teaching reforms. In th…

Engineering analysis on periodic pedal motion of clams during foot penetration.

Clams are bivalve species that burrow into substrate using a characteristic organ termed 'foot'. Their burrowing process involves a repetitive sequence of movements termed the digging cycle. This study focuses on the initial phase of the digging cycle: foot penetration into substrate, as a step toward clarifying the burrowing mechanism from robotics and soil mechanics perspectives. We proposed that the periodic pedal motion plays a key role in facilitating foot penetration through reduction of substrate resistance. To identify the essential characteristics, this motion was decomposed into thre

Engineering an injectable and tunable hydrogel as a potential vitreous substitute.

Retinal detachment, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and ocular trauma are major causes of blindness, and their treatment often relies on intraocular endotamponades following vitrectomy. However, many existing endotamponades tend to disperse or fragment during injection, making it difficult to form a stable structure within the vitreous cavity and thereby severely limiting their functional performance and clinical applicability. Consequently, the development of injectable endotamponades with controlled viscosity and in situ gelation remains a critical challenge. In this study, we present an

Dynamic ligand-vacancy engineering drives metal dimerization for efficient urea electrooxidation.

The electrochemical urea oxidation reaction offers environmental benefits by enabling hydrogen generation and nitrogen recycling. However, catalyst instability caused by surface reconstruction remains a challenge. Here, we develop a heteronuclear vacancy-to-bond strategy that achieves both catalytic activation and structural preservation via atomic-level self-optimization. Using Fe-doped bimetallic frameworks, we construct a self-adaptive coordination microenvironment that dynamically generates controllable ligand vacancies while promoting metal dimerization, leading to shortened interatomic d

Skeletal editing via multi-step engineering of a modular polyketide synthase.

Assembly line biosynthesis creates numerous structurally diverse natural products using a common modular synthetic strategy. The collinearity between the architectures of modular polyketide synthases (PKS) and the structures of their polyketide products would seem to render these biosynthetic machineries excellent platforms for designer biosynthesis, yet reliable strategies to reprogram these assembly lines without diminishing their activities have not been identified. Here, as a best practice for PKS engineering, we demonstrate the reprogramming of the mediomycin PKS without significant loss …

In situ learning-based spin engineering of pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization.

Pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is currently receiving substantial interest as a means to enhance the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging by orders of magnitude. It has also received much attention as a central ingredient in many modalities of electron-spin-involved quantum sensing. Relative to spin engineering associated with NMR, the design of efficient pulsed DNP experiments with a broad experimental scope is challenged by large electron-nuclear spin systems, large electron-spin-involved interactions, and instrumental nonidealities and li…
