Effects of l-(2-nitro-l-imidazolyl)-3-methoxy-2-propanol and 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-l-ethanol against anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and protozoa.

1-(2-Nitro-1-imidazolyl)-3-methoxy-2-propanol (RO 7-0582) and 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-1-ethanol (Metronidazole), substances known to be potent trichomonacides, were shown to inhibit obligate anaerobic bacteria in vitro but were essentially without effect at the doses tested against bacteria capable of growing aerobically. A similar effect was noted in vivo in that both substances exhibited good chemotherapeutic activity against infections produced by three species of anaerobic protozoa but were essentially inactive at the doses tested against three species of aerobic protozoa.

The lung pays the price: Massive pleural empyema as a rare complication of amoebic liver abscess - an autopsy case report.

An amoebic liver abscess (ALA) caused by Entamoeba histolytica remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in tropical regions. Although hepatic rupture into adjacent thoracic structures is a recognised but rare complication, it can be fatal if undiagnosed or untreated. Hepatic abscesses can rupture and spread the infection to the thoracic cavity, resulting in the formation of a hepato-thoracic fistula, rarely. We report an autopsy case of a middle-aged female who died suddenly following nonspecific systemic symptoms. Postmortem examination revealed a large ALA that had ruptured thr…

Unravelling the Relationship: Oral Protozoans, Periodontitis and Systemic Non-Communicable Diseases.

Oral protozoans, specifically Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax, have been identified in the oral cavity of individuals with periodontitis, frequently known as gum disease. Periodontitis is characterised by inflammation and degradation of the periodontal tissues and has been associated with the aggravation of systemic noncommunicable diseases. Although the importance of oral protozoans in periodontitis progression is often overlooked, their occurrence in individuals with periodontitis has reportedly been linked to the same modifiable risk factors contributing to numerous systemic nonc…

Malaria and an Amoebic Abscess in a Returning Traveler from Liberia.

Malaria is an infectious Anopheles mosquito-borne disease caused by five different eukaryotic protozoa parasites. Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Both diseases are widespread in Liberia. A returning traveler was diagnosed and treated for malaria, and 20 days later, an amoebic liver abscess was discovered, meaning that the malaria infection masked the amoebic infection, which emphasizes the importance of a complete examination of returning travelers, especially for those returning from Sub-Saharan Africa, where coinfections are more common. Herein, we propos…

Development of an immunobinding dot-blot assay as an alternative for the serodiagnosis of human cysticercosis.

An immunobinding dot-blot assay (DBA) was developed on nitrocellulose paper for the serodiagnosis of human cysticercosis, using Cysticercus cellulosae as antigen. The DBA had an immunological sensitivity of 0.08 mg of antigen protein/ml; however, it showed cross-reactions with antigens of adult Taenia solium and Echinococcus granulosus, but not with Toxoplasma gondii and Entamoeba histolytica antigens. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used as the gold standard for obtaining the diagnostic validity of the DBA, giving 84.61%, 100.00%, 100.00% and 97.98% for epidemiological sensit…

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infestation in HIV/AIDS patients with diarrhea in Madurai City, South India.

The prevalence and pattern of parasitic infestation among 80 HIV/AIDS patients with diarrhea in Madurai, south India, was studied by microscopy. Eighty HIV-negative patients were used as controls. Intestinal parasites were detected in 31 HIV/AIDS patients (38.7%) and in 14 (17.5%) HIV-negative patients, a difference that was statistically significant (P < 0.05). In HIV/AIDS patients with diarrhea, protozoa accounted for the majority of diarrhea cases (Entamoeba spp. 37.5%, Cryptosporidium parvum 28.7%). It is therefore suggested that enteric infections are more common in HIV-infected patients …

Malaria and intestinal parasitosis among children presenting to the paediatric centre in Sana'a, Yemen.

We studied the profile of malaria and intestinal parasitosis among children presenting to the Paediatric Health Centre in Sana'a from January 1998 to December 2000. In stool samples from 9014 children, Ascaris lumbricoides, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichuris trichiura were the most common. Infection with parasites of direct life-cycle were similar in boys and girls. Schistosome infection was significantly higher in boys than girls, but girls were more infected with ascariasis. The only species of malaria parasite found in blood samples from 753 children with suspected malaria…

Disseminated acanthamoebiasis presenting as lobular panniculitis with necrotizing vasculitis in a patient with AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated acanthamoebiasis is a rare entity, almost exclusively occurring in the immunocompromised host. METHODS: We report … wledge of the trophozoite and cyst forms may be helpful in distinguishing Acanthamoeba species from Entamoeba histolytica.

Cellulose acetate precipitation test in sero-diagnosis of amoebiasis.

Cellulose acetate precipitation (CAP) test for the detection of antibody against Entamoeba histolytica using the axenic antigen, was performed on the 127 serum samples obtained from patients with amoebic liver abscess (14), amoebic hepatitis (21), amoebic dysentry (11), amoebic colitis (31), other parasitic infestations (25) and normal individuals (25). The percent positivity was 100, 95.23, 90.9, 67.74 and 16 and 12 respectively whereas the corresponding figures for the indirect immunoflourescence (IFAT) test were 100, 100, 100, 74.19, 12 and 8 respectively. Although CAP is not as good a test…
