OBJECTIVE: To investigate the outcome of vitreoretinal surgery for severe Coats' disease.
METHODS: From December 1995 to December 1999, trans pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 11 patients (11 eyes) diagnosed as Coats' disease. Ten of them were complicated with total retinal detachment, and the other one had tractional retinal detachment caused by epiretinal proliferation. All these patients were followed up from 3 months to 4.5 years.

AIMS: To determine the prevalence of polypoidal choroidopathy in consecutive patients presenting with large haemorrhagic and exudative neurosensory retinal and retinal pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) of over 2 mm in diameter in the absence of drusen.
METHODS: 40 patients were identified over a 5 month period of which 29 had haemorrhagic detachments, and 11 had purely exudative detachments. All had indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, and the presence was sought of large blood vessels in the choroid associated with localised dilated terminals that filled slowly and leaked ICG.

PURPOSE: To describe three cases of exudative retinal detachment and focal retinitis associated with acquired syphilitic uveitis.
METHODS: Three patients who were referred for evaluation of uveitis were examined. Slit-lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, B-scan ultrasonography, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography were performed before and after therapy.

Patients with zoster sine herpete and Ramsay Hunt syndrome without pathognomonic vesicles at the initial visit are often misdiagnosed with Bell's palsy and treated without antiviral agents. With PCR, we found that varicella zoster virus genomes were frequently detectable in auricular skin exudate from patients with zoster sine herpete or Ramsay Hunt syndrome before the appearance of vesicles.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) in the evaluation of arthritic shoulder joints.
METHODS: Twenty shoulders of 20 inpatients with arthritis were evaluated by US one day before the shoulder operation. Changes in the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, biceps tendon and tendon sheath, rotatof cuff, and glenohumeral joint were recorded and compared with findings at operation.
RESULTS: In the detection of effusion/hypertrophy in the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, US had a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 83%. For a biceps tendon rupture US had a sensitivity of 70%

The authors describe a 59-year-old woman who had a traumatic wound rupture 6 months following penetrating keratoplasty. While she was in the pre-operative holding area awaiting surgical repair, hemorrhagic choroidal detachments developed. Twenty-five leg ulcer exudate samples from 17 patients with chronic non-healing venous leg ulcer were analyzed for proteolytic activity using radial caseinolysis procedures and zymographic analysis, and for fibronectin fragmentation using immunoblotting technology.
