Do Feed Plants Provide Sufficient Sodium, Calcium and Magnesium to Sika Deer in Japan? An Analysis Using Global Plant Trait Data.

Deficient minerals in overabundant populations could act as an attractant to cull sika deer (Cervus nippon). Because selective culling of female deer is reported to be effective in reducing sika deer populations, it is particularly important to clarify the differences in mineral requirements between males and females. Here, using global plant trait data and a published list of sika deer feed plants in Japan, we estimated whether feed plants provide sika deer sufficient sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), and compared the results between males and females. An analysis of 191 feed plan

Culture of attached and suspended Rhodopseudomonas faecalis in the presence of decomposing fish feed.

An approach to culturing attached and suspended forms of Rhodopseudomonas faecalis by using compound fish feed with tap water in transparent containers is reported in this study. The ratio of fish feed to tap water was 14.3-50.8 g/L, and no other inoculum or substances were added during the culture process. When the ratio of fish feed to tap water was 14.3 g/L, the highest total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total dissolved carbon content recorded in the water in the containers were approximately 730 mg/L, 356 mg/L, and 1,620 mg/L, respectively, during the process of feed decay. [Effects of non-nutritive sucking on the physiological and behavioral states of pre-term infants during tube feeding].

PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the effects of non-nutritive sucking on physiological and behavioral state of pre-term infants during tube feeding. METHOD: This nonequivalent, non-synchronized experimental study included 50 pre-term infants. An attempt was made to match gestational age and birth weight of infants in each group. Infants in the experimental group were given a pacifier 2 minutes before, during, and for 2 minutes after tube feeding. Infants in the control group did not get a pacifier. Both groups were tested at three stages for changes in the physiologic state and behavior

Real-world implementation of a standardized ICU protocol for daytime-restricted enteral nutrition in critically ill adults: A retrospective quality improvement study.

BACKGROUND: Enteral nutrition (EN) delivery is often interrupted in the intensive care unit (ICU), and while continuous 24-hour feeding is standard practice, emerging evidence from circadian biology and pilot trials suggests that daytime-restricted EN may enhance nutritional adequacy and patient outcomes by aligning feeding with biological rhythms. METHODS: This quality improvement study describes a novel, standardized daytime-restricted EN protocol in a community hospital ICU and retrospectively evaluate its real-world implementation. The protocol involved a stepwise transition in EN deliver

Use of a specialized peptide-based enteral formula containing medium-chain triglycerides for enteral tube feeding in children with cerebral palsy and previous tube feeding intolerance on standard enteral formula: a prospective observational TolerUP study.

OBJECTIVE: Use of peptide-based formulas supplemented with medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) is considered a beneficial strategy to decrease the tube-feeding associated gastrointestinal tolerance. In children with cerebral palsy (CP), overall effects of enteral tube feeding as well as the utility of peptide-based specialized enteral formulas in those with gastrointestinal intolerance have not been extensively studied. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of enteral tube feeding via specialized peptide-based formula containing MCTs in children with CP in terms of gastrointestinal intoleranc

Oropharyngeal dysphagia impact of pneumonia risk in neurological patients receiving enteral tube feeding: Insights from a gastroenterologist.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is prevalent among neurological patients, often necessitating enteral tube feeding with a nasogastric tube (NGT) or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). These patients are at significant risk of developing aspiration pneumonia. This study aimed to assess the impact of oropharyngeal dysphagia on pneumonia risk requiring hospitalization in neurological patients on long-term enteral tube feeding. METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted between 2015 and 2022. It included neurological patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endo

Intensive care unit-acquired dysphagia - change in feeding route after a standardized dysphagia assessment in neurocritical care patients.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a frequent finding on intensive care units (ICUs) and is associated with increased reintubation rates, pneumonia, and prolonged ICU-stay. Only a limited numbers of ICUs have access to a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP). Hence, it falls upon the critical care team to estimate dysphagia risk and define the safest feeding route. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if the feeding route established by the ICU-team is changed after a standardized dysphagia assessment (DA) by an SLP. Furthermore, we tried to identify predictors for the need of a SLP assessme

Aedes aegypti feeding behavior during dengue outbreaks in two rural areas of Peru during the Yaku cyclone and El Niño phenomenon of 2023.

BACKGROUND: Motivation for the study. Dengue epidemics caused by A. aegypti occur during climatic events in tropical countries such as Peru; however, the feeding behavior of the mosquito usually goes unnoticed. BACKGROUND: Main findings. A. aegypti populations in Marcavelica and Querecotillo showed anthropophilic feeding behavior during cyclone Yaku and in the 2023 El Niño. However, populations with different feeding patterns are not ruled out. BACKGROUND: Implications. The PCR-RFLP technique of the blood cell cytochrome B gene could be implemented in vector control policies through an entom

Differences in Bacterial Translocation and Liver Injury in Ethanol Versus Diet-Induced Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are two of the most common etiologies of chronic liver disease worldwide. Changes in intestinal permeability and increased gut microbial translocation have been posited as important contributors to inflammation in both ALD and NAFLD. However, gut microbial translocation has not been compared between the two etiologies and can lead to better understanding of the differences in their pathogenesis to liver disease. METHODS: We compared serum and liver markers in t

Pharyngeal biorhythms during oral milk challenge in high-risk infants: Do they predict chronic tube feeding?

BACKGROUND: Eating difficulties are common in high-risk neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infants; mechanisms remain unclear. Crib-side pharyngo-esophageal motility testing is utilized to assess contiguous swallowing physiology, and cross-system interplay with cardio-respiratory rhythms. Aims were to: (1) identify whether distinct pharyngeal rhythms exist during oral milk challenge (OMC), and (2) develop a chronic tube feeding risk prediction model in high-risk infants. METHODS: Symptomatic NICU infants (N = 56, 29.7 ± 3.7 weeks birth gestation) underwent pharyngo-esophageal manometry with

Neural Pathway for Gut Feelings: Vagal Interoceptive Feedback From the Gastrointestinal Tract Is a Critical Modulator of Anxiety-like Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are associated with an altered perception of the body's internal state. Therefore, understanding the neuronal basis of interoception can foster novel anxiety therapies. In rodents, the feeding status bidirectionally modulates anxiety-like behavior but how the sensing of gastrointestinal state affects anxiety remains unclear. METHODS: We combined chemogenetics, neuropharmacology, and behavioral approaches in male and female rats to test whether vagal afferents terminating in the gastrointestinal tract mediate feeding-induced tuning of anxiety. Using saporin-based
