Aluminum is known to enhance the ability of iron to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) but the mechanism subserving this is unknown. In an attempt to understand the means by which this potentiation occurs, several types of experiment have been conducted. In a coastal population in whom anaemia was common, two randomised controlled trials were undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of treating iron deficiency anaemia at a dispensary and at primary schools. The serum ferritin concentration, a new means of assessing iron nutrition, was utilized in conjunction with the hematocrit value, serum iron concentration, and total iron binding capacity to determine the effect of a three-month period of iron supplementation in a group of 146 Eskimo children in Chevak, Alaska.
