Determinants of intergenerational sexual relationships and HIV risk among South African women outpatients in Gauteng.

Age-discrepant sexual relationships may place women at risk for HIV infection in South Africa. Results are based on medical records and case-control interview data of 889 sexually experienced women outpatients aged 15-29 in a Gauteng township. Women with partners at least ten years older (intergenerational) show an elevated chance of having an early sexual debut, concurrent and transactional partners, and intimate partner violence. Hardship during childhood including parental loss, food insecurity and abuse are related to age asymmetric relationships. HIV is two times more likely (aOR=1.96) wi…

Detection of human monkeypox in the Republic of the Congo following intensive community education.

Monkeypox is an acute viral infection with a clinical course resembling smallpox. It is endemic in northern and central Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), but it is reported only sporadically in neighboring Republic of the Congo (ROC). In October 2009, interethnic violence in northwestern DRC precipitated the movement of refugees across the Ubangi River into ROC. The influx of refugees into ROC heightened concerns about monkeypox in the area, because of the possibility that the virus could be imported, or that incidence could increase caused by food insecurity and over reliance on bush me…

A four year (1996-2000) analysis of social capital and health status of Canadians: the difference that love makes.

Despite extensive research on the relationship between social capital and health, the specific pathways through which social capital is related to health have not been fully elucidated. Moreover, research has generally been cross-sectional, particularly in Canada, and hence not clearly attentive to the causal relationship between social capital and health. In this study we have examined the importance of multiple forms of individual social capital for the functional health status of adult Canadians, employing the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS). We examine changes in health b

A review of dairy food intake for improving health among black geriatrics in the US.

The transition to older adulthood is generally marked by progressive declines in body composition, metabolism, cognitive function, and immunity. For socially disadvantaged geriatric populations such as Black Americans, this life stage may also include additional stressors, including dealing with discrimination, poor access to healthcare, and food insecurity. These types of chronic stressors are linked to a higher allostatic load, which is associated with accelerated biological aging, higher rates of adverse health outcomes, and an overall lower quality of life. Of the numerous factors involved…

An In Silico In Vitro and In Vivo Study on the Influence of an Eggplant Fruit (Solanum anguivi Lam) Diet on Metabolic Dysfunction in the Sucrose-Induced Diabetic-like Fruit Fly (Drosophila melanogaster).

Introduction: Africa faces immense food and health insecurity challenges, a problem partly attributed to food loss and waste during postharvest handling and distribution. In the context of research to meet the sustainable development goals, this project specifically addressed the postharvest loss of the ripe indigenous eggplant (Solanum anguivi lam) fruit called "Igba Yinrin" by Yoruba in South-West Nigeria, which is usually discarded in farms. The study was carried out on ripe and unripe fruits to better understand their value by comparing their effects in diabetes treatment. Methods: The stu

The 'invisible homeless' - challenges faced by families bringing up their children in a remote Australian Aboriginal community.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient and inadequate housing remain serious and enduring problems in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia. Housing is recognised as a key determinant of persisting inequities between Aboriginal and other Australians in health, as well as education and employment outcomes which in turn impact on health. In our qualitative study exploring strengths and challenges related to early childhood in a remote NT community, insufficient housing emerged as the greatest challenge families experience in 'growing up' their children. METHODS: The "Growi

Lutein and zeaxanthin provide protection against aflatoxin B1-induced liver and kidney toxicity: insights from in Silico and in Vivo studies.

Exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) poses significant threats to food safety, increases food insecurity, and endangers public health due to its pronounced organ toxicity and carcinogenicity, especially affecting the hepatorenal system. This study integrates network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses to investigate the protective roles of the natural carotenoids lutein (LUT) and zeaxanthin (ZEA) against AFB1-induced toxicity. Key hub genes-ALB, IL2, LGALS3, SRC, REN, EGFR, PRKACA, LCN2, F2, and TTR- implicated in carcinogenesis, stress response, cellular homeostasis, and tissue remodelling…

Symptom-Heavy Nutritional Insecurity in Older Adults Initiating Chemotherapy.

Background: Older adults initiating chemotherapy are highly vulnerable to symptom burden and treatment interference. Nutritional insecurity (NI), barriers in food access, preparation, tolerance, and consumption, is a potentially modifiable determinant of treatment vulnerability, yet its role in shaping symptom pathways during chemotherapy is poorly understood. Objective: To characterize NI as a symptom phenotype and examine associations between NI and symptom burden, functional limitations, life interference, and inflammatory biomarkers in older adults undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: In a cr

Risk factors of stunting and wasting in Somali pre-school age children: results from the 2019 Somalia micronutrient survey.

BACKGROUND: Stunting and wasting in children less than 5 years of age are two key indicators of child malnutrition. Reducing their prevalence is a priority of the global public health community and for Somalia, a country suffering complex humanitarian emergencies such as drought, flooding, conflict and large-scale displacements. METHODS: Data from the nationally representative cross-sectional Somalia Micronutrient Survey (SMS 2019) on 1947 children were analyzed to assess the prevalence and potential risk factors of stunting and wasting. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted sep

Context-specific complementary feeding recommendations developed using Optifood could improve the diets of breast-fed infants and young children from diverse livelihood groups in northern Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate age- and context-specific complementary feeding recommendations (CFR) for infants and young children (IYC) and to compare the potential of filling population-level nutrient gaps using common sets of CFR across age groups. DESIGN: Linear programming was used to develop CFR using locally available and acceptable foods based on livelihood- and age-group-specific dietary patterns observed through 24 h dietary recalls. Within each livelihood group, the nutrient potential of age-group-specific v. consolidated CFR across the three age groups was tested. SETTING: Three food-i

Children with Moderate Acute Malnutrition with No Access to Supplementary Feeding Programmes Experience High Rates of Deterioration and No Improvement: Results from a Prospective Cohort Study in Rural Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) have an increased risk of mortality, infections and impaired physical and cognitive development compared to well-nourished children. In parts of Ethiopia not considered chronically food insecure there are no supplementary feeding programmes (SFPs) for treating MAM. The short-term outcomes of children who have MAM in such areas are not currently described, and there remains an urgent need for evidence-based policy recommendations. METHODS: We defined MAM as mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of ≥11.0 cm and <12.5 cm with no bilateral
