Drying Temperature and Storage Duration for the Retention of Bioactive Compounds of Selected Wild Edible Plants From Ethiopia.

Foods rich in bioactive compounds significantly prevent chronic diseases; however, these compounds are susceptible to drying temperature and storage duration because they lose some of their functionalities. This study aimed to determine effective drying temperatures and storage durations for better retention of bioactive compounds of three Ethiopian wild edible plants: Mussaenda arcuata, Celosia trigyna, and Pteridium aquilinum. The collected samples were oven-dried at 60°C, 65°C, and 70°C in a convective oven dryer to equilibrium moisture content and cooled to room temperature and analyzed fo

Safety risk analysis of high dosage of phosphogypsum in limestone soil and yellow soil: a case study of potted amaranth.

The safe management and sustainable utilization of phosphogypsum (PG) tailings in Guizhou, China, represent a pressing issue. High dosage incorporation of PG into karst soil has emerged as a promising approach. This method not only addresses the long-term storage issue of substantial PG tailings but also has the potential to enhance soil fertility. However, its safety risks to soil and food chain remain unclear. Through pot experiments, we incorporated 10-20% PG into limestone soil and yellow soil from the Karst region. The findings indicated significant increases in soil organic carbon (from

Modulating the thermo-immuno-endocrine axis to alleviate heat stress in poultry: A pharmacological perspective.

Rising global temperatures, compounded by diminishing water resources, have escalated the incidence and severity of heat stress in poultry production, posing a critical threat to animal welfare, productivity, and food security. Heat stress represents a multifactorial physiological challenge, disrupting the thermo-immuno-endocrine axis and thereby impairing hypothalamic thermoregulation, suppressing immune responses, and altering endocrine signaling pathways. Such imbalances contribute to reduced feed intake, compromised growth and reproductive performance, elevated mortality rates, and heighte…

Tracing and source fingerprinting of metals from the southern coastal sediments in Bangladesh.

Trace element pollution from anthropogenic sources is increasingly widespread. This pollution in terrestrial environments threatens agricultural crop production, while in aquatic environments, it threatens fish cultivation. The contamination of these crucial food sources raises significant concerns regarding food safety, security, and its potential adverse effects on human health. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal pollution due to their proximity to industrial and urban centres, as well as their susceptibility to contamination from marine sources. In attempting to identi

Investigating the relationship between growing season quality and childbearing goals.

Agricultural production and household food security are hypothesized to play a critical role connecting climate change to downstream effects on women's health, especially in communities dependent on rainfed agriculture. Seasonal variability in agriculture strains food and income resources and makes it a challenging time for households to manage a pregnancy or afford a new child. Yet, there are few direct assessments of the role locally varying agricultural quality plays on women's health, especially reproductive health. In this paper we build on and integrate ideas from past studies focused on…
