Tubal clips for female sterilization account for about 10 to 40% of the contraceptive methods used throughout the world. Clip migration is an unusual complication which may lead to chronic unexplained abdominal pain. We report here the case of a 44-year-old woman who suffered from chronic abdominal pain. The diagnosis of intraperitoneal migration of the Filshie clip fixed five years earlier was made. Cure was achieved with ablation of the clip. Grommet insertion is one of the commonest surgical procedures performed in the UK. We have come across three cases in which grommets have displaced medially in the middle ear after establishing a satisfactory post-insertion position. We suggest that an abnormally long myringotomy incision and improper placement of the grommet are responsible for this unwanted outcome.

BACKGROUND: Migration of biliary endoprostheses is a recognized complication of bile duct stenting. Removing a stent that has migrated is usually straightforward, but this can be challenging when the stent is firmly impacted in the opposite wall of the duodenum or within a diverticulum. A case is presented of a patient with a psychiatric illness and pica who developed a pyogenic liver abscess due to perforation of the duodenum by a pen. This report emphasizes the importance of ultrasound and computed tomography in making a rapid diagnosis. The relative superiority of ultrasound was revealed because an anaesthetic was not required for scanning, and in addition to the liver abscess, the precise location of the perforating foreign body was demonstrated.

A number of vaginal and urethral devices have recently been introduced for the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence. Nine recent studies of these were scrutinized. The median corrected subjective cured/improved rate was 63% for the vaginal and 43% for the urethral devices. The latter group have a high percentage of side-effects with related drop-outs. This is a report of an hydrocephalic adult, in whom a unishunt system migrated upwards into the ventricle despite using the appropriate clips (lock and slip). The shunt migration discovered 3 months following its insertion. Several mechanisms contributed to the migration; negative sucking intra-ventricular pressure, positive pushing intra-abdominal pressure, tortuous subcutaneous track and neck movements. It seams that lock and slip clips are not enough fixation. The best way of preventing such shunt migration is interposing a reservoir between the ventricular and peritoneal catheters.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter occlusion with Gianturco coils has been attempted in a small number of patients with tiny (< or = 1.5-mm diameter) patent ductus arteriosus, and preliminary results have been encouraging. The present study extends this method to larger ductus sizes and makes recommendations for proper coil size selection.
