Validity of a pump-perfused chicken thigh model for microsurgical training.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical training has traditionally relied on live animal models. While these offer high anatomical and functional fidelity, their use raises increasing ethical, logistical, and economic concerns and alternatives are needed. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study to assess the subjective and objective validity of a pump-perfused chicken thigh model for microsurgical training. Forty-five residents and surgeons were categorized by microsurgical experience. Thirteen participants underwent motion analysis and blinded video-based scoring. All participants performe

A Bilateral Comparison of Lower Limb Strength and Pirouette Performance in Elite Female Dancers.

Introduction: Traditional dance training is designed to develop a well-balanced dancer, yet laterality has the ability to impair bilateral strength and functional symmetry. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of lateral preference on elite level dancers by conducting a bilateral comparison of lower limb strength and pirouette performance. A pirouette is an essential turning skill in dance technique, wherein multiple revolutions are completed on a single supporting leg along the longitudinal axis. Methods: Eight highly trained female dancers performed three maximal effort singl

A qualitative study of community perceptions and practices relating to blood donation in Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Blood and blood products are essential for patients in need of transfusion therapy, especially those undergoing surgical procedures, childbirth and other injuries. In Cameroon, there is an annual deficit of over 270 000 pints of blood, with a coverage rate of only 17%. This qualitative study investigates the barriers and motivators to blood donation among Cameroonian adults, with the aim of better understanding community perceptions and practices. METHODS: This ethnographic study was performed using a purposive sampling strategy. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews w

Assessing communicative-pragmatic ability in telehealth: e-ABaCo in autistic individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social communication. Autistic individuals who are verbally fluent, often show difficulties in pragmatic ability, i.e. the capacity to use language and other expressive means, as gestures or the tone of the voice, to convey meaning in a given context. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of various technologies such as videoconferencing and internet for the delivery of healthcare services, i.e. telehealth, has proven to be effective, accessible and safe tools for remote healthcare. H…

Morphofunctional Space of the Forelimb in Caraguatypotherium munozi (Notoungulata; Mesotheriidae): Insights Into Wrist-Powered Digging.

Understanding how extinct animals moved is a central goal in paleobiology, yet interpreting locomotor function from anatomy alone is complicated by convergent and divergent morphologies. One promising approach is the construction of morphofunctional spaces (MFSs), which integrate multiple biomechanical indices and comparative statistics to refine functional inference. This study investigates forelimb adaptations for digging in Caraguatypotherium munozi (Notoungulata, Mesotheriidae), a mid-sized Miocene notoungulate lacking extant analogs. We developed an MFS based on osteological measurements

Early identification of seizure freedom with medical treatment in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) is usually associated with a poor response to antiseizure medications. We focused on MTLE-HS patients who were seizure free on medication to: (1) determine the clinical factors associated with seizure freedom and (2) develop a machine-learning classifier to better earlier identify those patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, multicentric study comparing 64 medically treated seizure-free MTLE-HS patients with 200 surgically treated drug-resistant MTLE-HS patients. First, we collected medical history and se

Machine-learning-based children's pathological gait classification with low-cost gait-recognition system.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gaits of children may lead to terrible diseases, such as osteoarthritis or scoliosis. By monitoring the gait pattern of a child, proper therapeutic measures can be recommended to avoid the terrible consequence. However, low-cost systems for pathological gait recognition of children automatically have not been on market yet. Our goal was to design a low-cost gait-recognition system for children with only pressure information. METHODS: In this study, we design a pathological gait-recognition system (PGRS) with an 8 × 8 pressure-sensor array. An intelligent gait-recognit

Infrared thermography of the crânio-cervico-mandibular complex in wind and string instrumentalists.

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal disorders can be common in wind and string instrumentalists. The musical gesture technique associated to musical performance can promote an asymmetrical isometric contraction with the hyperactivity of specific muscular groups and the overload of articular surfaces which can cause discomfort or pain. The aim of this investigation was to assess specific anatomical regions of interest within the cranio-cervico-mandibular complex in order to determine and evaluate the presence of muscular hyperactivity associated to musical performance. METHODS: An infrared imaging camera

The role of conflict, feedback, and action comprehension in monitoring of action errors: Evidence for internal and external routes.

The mechanisms and brain regions underlying error monitoring in complex action are poorly understood, yet errors and impaired error correction in these tasks are hallmarks of apraxia, a common disorder associated with left hemisphere stroke. Accounts of monitoring of language posit an internal route by which production planning or competition between candidate representations provide predictive signals that monitoring is required to prevent error, and an external route in which output is monitored using the comprehension system. Abnormal reliance on the external route has been associated with

PCA and deep learning based myoelectric grasping control of a prosthetic hand.

BACKGROUND: For the functional control of prosthetic hand, it is insufficient to obtain only the motion pattern information. As far as practicality is concerned, the control of the prosthetic hand force is indispensable. The application value of prosthetic hand will be greatly improved if the stable grip of prosthetic hand can be achieved. To address this problem, in this study, a bio-signal control method for grasping control of a prosthetic hand is proposed to improve patient's sense of using prosthetic hand and the thus improving the quality of life. METHODS: A MYO gesture control armband

Abnormal dynamics of activation of object use information in apraxia: evidence from eyetracking.

Action representations associated with object use may be incidentally activated during visual object processing, and the time course of such activations may be influenced by lexical-semantic context (e.g., Lee, Middleton, Mirman, Kalénine, & Buxbaum (2012). Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 39(1), 257-270). In this study we used the "visual world" eye-tracking paradigm to examine whether a deficit in producing skilled object-use actions (apraxia) is associated with abnormalities in incidental activation of action information, and assessed the neuroanatomical

Apraxia differs in corticobasal degeneration and left-parietal stroke: A case study.

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a progressive disorder characterized by both cortical and basal ganglia dysfunction such as asymmetrical apraxia, and akinetic rigidity, involuntary movements, and cortical sensory loss. Although apraxia is a key finding for the differential diagnosis of CBD, it has not been determined whether the features of apraxia seen in subjects with CBD are similar to those features exhibited by subjects with left-hemisphere damage from stroke. Therefore, for both clinical purposes and in order to better understand the brain mechanisms that lead to apraxia in CBD, we st

Development of a test battery (NPM-X) for neuropsychological and neuromotor examination of children with developmental disabilities or mental retardation. A theoretical and clinical study.

Biological and behavioural diagnosis often do not provide information on functional competence. This is, however, of utmost importance in planning services as well as in research on treatment effects for children with developmental disorders. For school-aged children neuropsychological assessment has proved its value in this respect. For children of chronological age (CA) below 5-7 with specific developmental disabilities, and for children with severe mental retardation there has been a lack of applicable test batteries. This thesis presents a new test battery for neuropsychological and neurom

Neural dynamics of emotionally expressive piano performance: a single-case study.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how expert performers translate expressive intent into sound remains a central question in the neuroscience of m … t basal ganglia, left thalamus, and left premotor cortex (BA6) to objective performance parameters (gestures per second, notes per phrase, acoustic intensity), suggesting that neurofunctional engagement scales with the motor complexity of the material performed. DISCUSSION: These findings provide a performer-side perspective complementary to models of mus …

Three days inside: exploring reciprocity and trust in a participatory action research community case study in the Netherlands.

Traditional scientific research has produced valuable knowledge, yet its linear, top-down logic often fails to address the complexity of loc … f control, acknowledge own positioning and assumptions, and prioritize relationships over outcomes. Gestures of presence and participation proved more powerful than formal conversations. Yet, tensions emerged between relational and transactional practices, between systemic logics and lived realities, and between pursuing research goals and fostering recipr …
