Benign oral masses in a Northern Jordanian population-a retrospective study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative frequencies, types and distribution of benign oral masses in North Jordanians. The records of the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science & Technology were reviewed and analyzed for patients with benign oral soft tissue masses, received during an 11-year period (1991-2001). The main outcome measures were patients' age and sex, and the mass type and location. A sum of 818 benign oral soft tissue masses (4% neoplastic and 96% non-neoplastic) was analyzed. Common benign neoplasms were salivary pleomorphic adenoma and lipoma. Non-n

Cutaneous balloon cell dermatofibroma (fibrous histiocytoma).

Dermatofibroma (DF) or cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma is a common benign skin tumor that exhibits multiple, distinct histologic variants. Although clear cell DF has been described in the literature, balloon cell degeneration causing a clear cell DF phenotype has been not been reported to date. Herein, we describe the clinicopathologic findings of balloon cell DF arising on the heel of a 43-year-old man. Clinically, it presented as enlarging tan-white, ulcerated, firm 1.5 cm nodule, clinically suspected to be pyogenic granuloma. Excisional biopsy revealed a circumscribed fibrous tumor populated

Complications of orbital implants: a review of 542 patients who have undergone orbital implantation and 275 subsequent PEG placements.

PURPOSE: To inform patients and physicians of the complications associated with three commonly used orbital implants, as well as associated anophthalmic socket issues. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 542 patients who underwent eviscerations, enucleations and secondary procedures by one surgeon (Dr. James Oestreicher) was completed, paying special attention to complications in the follow-up period prior to pegging, as well as those that occurred post-pegging. RESULTS: Approximately 60% of patients experienced complications prior to implant drilling, with discharge being the most prev

Clinical and electroencephalographic features of infantile spasms associated with malformations of cortical development.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonographic examination is commonly used in an outpatient setting, possibly due to its low cost, low risk for patients and the possibility to obtain real time images. Typically used heads have the frequency ranging from 7.5 to 12 MHz. Higher frequencies ensure higher resolution, yet they are limited by the penetration depth - reaching from several to several tens of millimetres into the skin. High-frequency ultrasonography (HFUS) appears to be a promising method for the detection and differential diagnostics of selected nodular skin lesions. AIM: The study aimed at a compar

Problems after evisceration surgery with porous orbital implants: experience with 86 patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the problems associated with the use of 4 types of porous orbital implant (Bio-Eye coralline hydroxyapatite, FCI3 synthetic hydroxyapatite, aluminium oxide [Bioceramic], and porous polyethylene [Medpor]) after evisceration surgery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made of all cases of evisceration with placement of one of four types of porous orbital implants performed between 1991 and 2002 by one surgeon (n = 86). Patient age, implant type and size, surgery type (standard evisceration or evisceration with posterior sclerotomies), peg system used, follow-up duration, t

A rare case of rapidly enlarging tracheal lobular capillary hemangioma presenting as difficult to ventilate acute asthma during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Lobular Capillary Hemangioma (LCH) is a benign tumour that is known to be hormone responsive and have a relatively high incidence during pregnancy, the most common site being the gingival surfaces. A tracheal origin for this tumour is extremely rare, with no case reported so far in this patient population, and the only reported clinical presentation of tracheal LCH in the literature is with haemoptysis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a 23-year-old known asthmatic who presented at 32 weeks gestation with life-threatening respiratory failure resembling acute severe asthma,

Intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma occurring in the cephalic vein of a 39-year-old adult.

Intravenous lobular capillary hemangiomas are extremely uncommon and mostly occur in the veins of the neck and upper extremities. Here, we report the clinical and sonographic features of an intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma localized in the right cephalic vein, and we discuss its pathologic findings and differential diagnoses.

Membrane of Plasma Rich in Growth Factors in Primary Pterygium Surgery Compared to Amniotic Membrane Transplantation and Conjunctival Autograft.

This prospective and comparative study aimed to compare the use of a conjunctival autograft (CAG), plasma rich in growth factors fibrin membrane (mPRGF) or amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in primary pterygium surgery. Patients were assigned for surgery with CAG (group A), mPRGF (group B), or AMT (group C). Pterygium recurrence, Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), graft size (measured with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT)), and ocular surface symptoms (visual analogue scale (VAS) and ocular surface disease index (OSDI)) were evaluated. Thirteen eyes in group A, 26

Patients with benign hand tumors are indicated for surgery according to patient-rated outcome measures.

INTRODUCTION: This study assessed the treatment outcomes of upper extremity benign tumors using the patient-rated outcome measures of Hand20 questionnaire. METHODS: In total, 304 patients who underwent surgery for benign bone and soft tissue tumors of the upper limb were included. Tumors were classified into three size groups: <1 cm, 1-3 cm, and >3 cm. Tumors were divided with respect to location: digit, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, or axilla. We prospectively assessed responses to the Hand20 questionnaire that was administered both before and after surgery. RESULTS: The mean Hand

Bacillary angiomatosis: presentation of six patients, some with unusual features.

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is an unusual systemic vascular proliferation seen predominantly in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. These vascular lesions are probably due to infection with a Bartonella species, most often B. henselae and, in some patients, B. quintana. BA is treatable and often curable, but without therapy, may be life-threatening. Clinically, the lesions, when superficial, are said to often resemble pyogenic granulomas, appearing polypoid histologically with an epidermal collarette. We now report six patients, three of whom showed lesions of BA morphologica

Isolated Splenic Tuberculosis in an Immunocompetent Young Woman: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Isolated splenic tuberculosis (TB) is an exceptionally rare form of extra pulmonary TB, accounting for <1% of abdominal TB cases. The nonspecific clinical presentation combined with limited sensitivity of molecular tests for extrapulmonary TB often delays diagnosis and misattribution to pyogenic abscess or malignancies. We report the case of 21-year-old immunocompetent woman presenting with vague upper abdominal pain and weight loss without any constitutional symptoms. Clinical examination revealed splenomegaly without lymphadenopathy. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed multiple sp

An Odontogenic Cutaneous Sinus Tract Mimicking a Mandibular Neoplasm: Diagnostic Challenges and Radiologic Correlation.

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts (OCSTs) are an uncommon consequence of chronic dental infection in which inflammatory drainage extends from a periapical source through bone and soft tissues to the skin surface. Although odontogenic infections typically present with intraoral symptoms such as pain, swelling, or vestibular drainage, chronic lesions may occasionally manifest as extraoral nodules, cysts, or draining sinuses. Because many patients experience little or no dental discomfort, these lesions are frequently misdiagnosed as dermatologic, infectious, or neoplastic conditions. The report

Diagnosing Common Benign Skin Tumors.

Patients commonly present to family physicians with skin findings, and distinguishing common benign skin tumors from potentially malignant tumors is important. Benign skin tumors can often be diagnosed by their history, distribution, and characteristic morphology. A biopsy or excision is indicated if there is diagnostic uncertainty or the lesion undergoes uncharacteristic or rapid change. A keratoacanthoma is a dome-shaped nodule with a central crater and can be difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinomas even with dermoscopy. Pilar cysts are typically benign, but rapidly growing ty

The frequency of fungal infection in biopsies of oral mucosal lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of fungal infection in biopsies of oral mucosal lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathology reports issued between 1991-1995 inclusive were reviewed. During this period, a single section of each mucosal biopsy had been stained using the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) technique. RESULTS: A total of 223 (4.7%) biopsies contained PAS-positive fungi: 191 individuals were affected, 124 (64.9%) of whom were male. There was a significant (P < 0.01) positive association of fungal infection with moderate and severe epithelial dysplasia, median rhomboid glossitis a

Intraoperative mitomycin C and cryotherapy as adjunct therapy for recurrent lobular capillary haemangioma of conjunctiva.

Recurrence of lobular capillary haemangioma of conjunctiva after surgical excision is rare but sometimes it may be difficult to manage multiple recurrences. A 31-year-old female patient presented with recurrent polypoid conjunctival lobular capillary haemangioma. Excisional biopsy was performed, followed by eye drop mitomycin C 0.04% four times a day for 1 week postoperatively. She reported again after 3 months with recurrence of vascular elongated nodular lesion. Excision of the mass with application of mitomycin C 0.02% intraoperatively for 1 min and cryotherapy using double thaw technique o
