Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is an important cause of fetal, perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. IUGR occurs because of multiple reasons. Neonates with IUGR experience acute problems in the perinatal and early neonatal period that can be life-threatening. The unfavorable uterine environment causing growth restriction results in programming that predisposes IUGR infants to long-term health issues such as poor physical growth, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, neurodevelopmental impairment and endocrine abnormalities, warranting careful monitoring. It is imperativ

The number of newborns born with diseases is increasing recently. Thyroid hormones (THs) are closely related to the growth and development of the newborn in the mother's womb and to the carriage of related diseases after birth. Environmental endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have been proven to harm THs in newborns. Phthalates (PAEs), a typical class of EDCs, are commonly used in toys, childcare materials, and food contact materials, which have been closely connected with neonatal thyroid dysfunction and thyroid-related diseases. As restrictions on PAEs become more stringent in neonatal fi

We report a case of osteoma cutis associated with a GNAS mutation in a 7-month-old boy. The patient displayed no other laboratory or physical abnormalities to suggest other GNAS-associated disorders of cutaneous ossification, including Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy or pseudohypoparathyroidism 1A, although a history of intrauterine growth restriction was troubling for progressive osseous heteroplasia. A review of the clinical and laboratory manifestations of these disorders is discussed, as well as differentiating features.

Achalasia is an uncommon esophageal motor disorder. It has been associated with other diseases such as Parkinson's disease and depressive disorders, but coincidence of achalasia and Down's syndrome is rare. We report five cases of achalasia in Down's syndrome patients seen in our institution. Two of the five cases were diagnosed at pediatric age. Respiratory symptoms and growth retardation were the main clinical manifestations in pediatric patients, whereas adult patients mainly complained of dysphagia. Taking into account the prevalence rate of both disorders, the association seems higher tha

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a complex neurogenetic disorder characterized by appetite dysregulation, obesity with decreased muscle mass and increased fat mass, behavioral problems, various endocrinopathies, and sleep and respiratory abnormalities. Respiratory issues include both central and obstructive sleep apnea, excessive daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy, and impaired ventilatory control. There is some controversy as to whether growth hormone treatment, which is the standard of care for patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome, exacerbates or ameliorates the sleep-disordered breathing issues associat

Previous in vitro studies pointed out the role played by several growth factors (basic fibroblast growth factor or bFGF, transforming growth factor beta-1 or TGF beta 1, insulin-like growth factor-I or IGF-I) on the proliferation, the differentiation and the fusion of myogenic precursor cells. We attempted to modify the muscle regeneration which follows the denervation-devascularization of extensor digitorum longus in mice, by acting on the growth factors which are possibly involved in this process. The injection of neutralizing antibodies against either bFGF or IGF-I into the muscle at the ti

OBJECTIVE: Personnel assigned to recover and identify human remains following mass violence are exposed to intense occupational trauma, yet longitudinal data on their psychological adaptation remain limited. This study compared an immediate cohort of military reservists' body handlers with a similar cohort 1-year postmission. The two groups served as body handlers following the Hamas's October 7, 2023, mass-casualty attack in southern Israel.
METHOD: Eighty-four reservists were assessed approximately 1 year after mission completion (Cohort 2) and compared with an independent cohort assessed i

With improvements in early diagnosis and management of genetic diseases, more women with genetic disorders are reaching reproductive age and becoming pregnant. While pregnancy can have a significant impact on a woman's health when there is an underlying genetic disorder, there can also be fetal effects, including embryopathy, fetal growth restriction, and brain injury. Some maternal genetic disorders are associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, including a high risk of perinatal loss and preterm birth. In this article, we review several maternal genetic disorders associated with fetal risk

Children with neurological disabilities frequently have problems with feeding and swallowing. Such problems have a significant impact on the health and well-being of these children and their families. The primary aims in the rehabilitation of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders are focused on supporting growth, nutrition and hydration, the development of feeding activities, and ensuring safe swallowing with the aim of preventing choking and aspiration pneumonia. Pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders can be divided into four groups: transient, developmental, chronic or progressive.T

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a major cause of poor outcome, including placental abruption, organ failure, cerebrovascular accident and disseminated intravascular coagulation. These disorders are associated with increased fetal risk of intrauterine growth restriction, intrauterine death and prematurity. Electrocardiography (ECG) recently emerged as a useful tool to evaluate cardiovascular complications during pregnancy. Specifically, left atrial abnormalities detected by standard ECG are associated with a fourfold increased risk of developing hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.

Nutritional disorders that cause bone loss in adults include disordered eating behaviors (female athlete triad and anorexia nervosa), gastrointestinal diseases (celiac sprue, inflammatory bowel disease, and other malabsorption syndromes), alcoholism, and hypervitaminosis A. These disorders exert their effects on bone through a number of mechanisms, including estrogen deficiency. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones may also be important, including insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), a nutritionally regulated bone trophic factor. In addition, low weight itself is a risk factor for bone loss and

A descriptive survey of renal hemodynamics in the major experimental models of progressive renal disorders (primary loss of renal tissue, primary glomerular injury and primary hypertension) is given. Although the pathogenesis in the different models differs in several respects, increases in glomerular capillary pressure and renal growth factors are important for the development of progressive renal disorders. In primary glomerular disorders, interstitial immune reactions seem to be critical. In glomerular nephritis with increased capillary wall thickness, the increase in glomerular capillary p

Congenital growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a rare disease caused by disorders affecting the morphogenesis and function of the pituitary gland. It is sometimes found in isolation but is more frequently associated with multiple pituitary hormone deficiency. In some cases, GHD may have a genetic basis. The many clinical signs and symptoms include hypoglycaemia, neonatal cholestasis and micropenis. Diagnosis should be made by laboratory analyses of the growth hormone and other pituitary hormones, rather than by cranial imaging with magnetic resonance imaging. When diagnosis is confirmed, hormon

Myhre syndrome is a rare disorder caused by a heterozygous mutation in the SMAD4 gene. Affected patients may exhibit dysmorphic facial features, intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, obesity, muscle hypertrophy, thickened skin, limited joint movement, hearing impairment, and varying degrees of psychomotor developmental disorder. Serious complications of the cardiovascular and respiratory system may be seen later in life. We report the case of a Chinese boy with Myhre syndrome presenting with a novel symptom of giant testicles where treatment with growth hormone combined with letrozol

BACKGROUND: 47,XYY is a chromosomal abnormality syndrome that is typically observed in patients with a male phenotype. Few patients with XYY syndrome will have infertility. We here report a case of 46,XY/47,XYY syndrome diagnosed in a patient with a female phenotype.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old patient with a female phenotype visited our hospital owing to a chief complaint of short stature as of the age of 6 years. She was diagnosed with dwarf syndrome at the age of 10, but no change was noted after 2 months of growth hormone treatment. The patient's height was 136 cm and the weight was

Based on the literature data in the last two decades, growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in adults has been accepted as a clinical entity. Due to the presence of GH and IGF-I receptors throughout the body, the physiological effects of the GH-IGF-I axis are still under investigation. The effects of GH on skin, sleep, and coagulation parameters in adults have only been investigated in detail only in the recent years. In this review, our aim was to summarize the literature regarding the effects of GHD and GH replacement treatment on the skin, sleep, and coagulation parameters in adults.

Iodine deficiency has multiple adverse effects in humans, termed iodine deficiency disorders, due to inadequate thyroid hormone production. Globally, it is estimated that 2 billion individuals have an insufficient iodine intake, and South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are particularly affected. However, about 50% of Europe remains mildly iodine deficient, and iodine intakes in other industrialized countries, including the United States and Australia, have fallen in recent years. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy and infancy may impair growth and neurodevelopment of the offspring and increase in

After vaccination against rubella was introduced, the number of cases of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome decreased significantly. The presentation of a case report of rubella virus congenital infection with important sequellae, stresses the need to reinforce prevention. The existence of rare cases of reinfection imply good surveillance that gestations should be maintained even in women previously immune.

Features of leprechaunism, including low-birth weight, a grotesque elfin face with clubbed nose, hirsutism, large low-set ears, enlarge external genitalia, distended abdomen with emaciated extremities, and growth and motor retardation were present in a 3-month-old girl. Because of parental consanguinity in this patient, a recessive mode of inheritance seems likely.
