BACKGROUND: Measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum (SC) pH can help indicate work-related skin barrier damage, but sensitivity to confounding personal and ambient factors limits their potential as biomonitoring tools.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the difference between hand and forearm skin barrier conditions as a tool for early recognition of workers with occupational contact dermatitis.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The participants were nursing apprentices (N = 238, median age 19 years) from Zagreb, Croatia. They filled out a questionnaire based on the Nordic Occupati

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis caused by occupational contact allergy to rubber additives such as diphenylguanidine (DPG) in medical gloves is a hazard for healthcare workers. Both the duration of exposure to medical gloves and the number of gloves used per day vary. The use of alcoholic skin disinfectants before glove donning is mandatory.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether skin exposure to the rubber accelerator DPG released from glove material is influenced by alcoholic hand disinfectants, time, and pH.
METHODS: With the use of ethanol washes, the amount of DPG left on the hands after wearing of glove

The accurate identification of compartment syndrome in the emergency department is essential to timely treatment and prevention of long-term sequela. Recognizing compartment syndrome is not straightforward, especially in the pediatric population. In addition to communication barriers that exist with children, the classic signs of pain, pallor, paresthesia, paralysis, and pulselessness are not always present, making its diagnosis a challenge. We report a case of a child with compartment syndrome to the left hand due to compression from an ACE wrap. The existing literature on compartment syndrom

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) is a rare myeloproliferative disorder. Less than 50 cases have been reported. We report the first case of CNL with an associated leukemia cutis. CNL was diagnosed in a 74-year-old white woman in 1998, based on neutrophilic infiltration of the bone marrow and absence of the Philadelphia chromosome. The patient presented to the dermatology service in August 1998 with a 2-week history of a pruritic eruption on the arms, hands, and legs. Physical examination revealed red to violaceous plaques on both thighs and knees, in addition to purpuric patches and plaques

BACKGROUND: Pitted keratolysis (PK) is a common bacterial infection of skin characterized by noninflammatory superficial pits. Very few studies have focused on variations in clinical manifestations of PK. We conducted this study so that diagnosis of this treatable condition is not missed when it presents in an uncommonly perceived way.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Assessment of PK patients for various sites and morphologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with PK were assessed for various sites and morphologies. Bacterial and fungal cultures along with histopathology were performed.

BACKGROUND: Cocamide DEA (CAS no. 68603-42-9) is a non-ionic surfactant frequently used in industrial, household and cosmetic products for its foam-producing and stabilizing properties. Contact allergy has been reported quite rarely in the past, but recently several cases were published, raising the question of an increase in the frequency of allergic dermatitis caused by this substance.
OBJECTIVES: To describe cocamide DEA-allergic patients and their characteristics observed in our department.
METHODS: Medical charts of patients, investigated between 1990 and December 2015, were retrospecti

BACKGROUND: Although endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) offers permanent cure of palmar hyperhidrosis (PH), compensatory hyperhidrosis (CH) often complicates the procedure. We analyzed the outcomes of a 2-month interval for unilateral sequential ETS (S-ETS) in comparison with simultaneous bilateral ETS (B-ETS), notably regarding CH and associated plantar hyperhidrosis, in treating patients with PH.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four hundred seven patients with intractable PH were randomly assigned into two groups: the B-ETS group (204 patients) and the S-ETS group (203 patients).
RESULTS: Three

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails caused in most cases by dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Despite numerous available antifungal drugs for therapy of this infection, the cure rate is low, with high rates of relapse after treatment and side effects.
OBJECTIVES: To present a new option for the treatment of onychomycosis, in search of a more effective and rapid method than conventional ones.
METHODS: Patients underwent two sessions of CO2 fractional laser 10.600nm associated with photodynamic therapy. Mycological and digital photograp

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is endemic in poverty-stricken communities of South and Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. This ectoparasitosis, caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans, is associated with considerable longterm morbidity in severely affected patients, including toe deformation and limited mobility. In Haiti, tungiasis is poorly documented but is known to occur. This study is the first formal investigation of tungiasis in Haiti.
METHODS: A total of 383 patients in four regions (Belle Fontaine, Vallue, Savanette, Cerca Carvajal) were examined and interviewed to deter

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) is a preservative used in both cosmetic and industrial settings. In Europe it is allowed to be used in rinse-off cosmetics only because of its propensity to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). No such legislation exists in Australia. In recent years MI without MCI has been used. In August 2010 the first cases of MI causing non-occupational ACD were reported in Europe. The objective here was to present a case series of ACD to MI occurring in the Australian setting.
METHODS: : We retrospectively reviewed posi

Hand-foot syndrome (HFS), also called hand-foot skin reaction, palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, acral erythema, and Burgdorf reaction, is a dose-limiting cutaneous toxicity of many chemotherapeutic agents. Recently, the multiple tyrosine kinase inhibitor class of novel targeted therapies, including sorafenib and sunitinib, has emerged as an important cause of HFS, with 10-28% of patients treated with sunitinib and 10-62% of patients treated with sorafenib reporting HFS. This review examines the epidemiology, clinical features, histopathology, pathogenesis models, prognostic implications, and

Neutrophilic dermatosis of the dorsal hands is a recently described disorder. It is still debatable if it constitutes a separate entity, a variant of Sweet syndrome or pyoderma gangrenosum or an overlap disorder of both. We report the clinical features, histopathological findings, and evolution of a 35-year-old patient with the diagnosis of neutrophilic dermatosis of the dorsal hands and distant lesions on the forehead.

Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE, hand-foot syndrome) is a relatively frequent cutaneous toxicity related to antineoplastic treatment with e.g. fluorouracil, capecitabine, and liposomal doxorubicin. It usually presents as paresthesia and painful erythema of the palms and soles and may lead to ulceration of the skin. The symptoms are dose-dependent, and the condition may be dose-limiting. Two cases of chemotherapy-associated PPE are presented.

BACKGROUND: Viral warts represent a large workload for dermatology departments. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is the most widely used method of treatment by dermatologists and is increasingly used by general practitioners in the U.K. Existing data relating to the response to cryotherapy are virtually all derived from the use of a cotton wool bud as the applicator. There is an increasing trend to use the cryo-spray to freeze warts and it has been assumed that this is equally effective. In view of the workload involved it is important to test this assumption.
OBJECTIVES: This prospective stu
