IgG4 elevation dilemma at the crossroads of helminth infection and IgG4-related disease: insights from a case report of pediatric paragonimiasis with persistent pericardial effusion.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder defined by elevated serum IgG4, tissue IgG4+ plasma cell infiltration, and multi-organ involvement. Paradoxically, helminth infections may also trigger IgG4 elevation through Th2-polarized immune responses, creating diagnostic ambiguity when overlapping features occur. Critically, no studies have addressed whether IgG4-RD with helminthiasis can coexist in children or how to differentiate them when histopathology is unavailable. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old boy with confirmed pulmonary pa…

In vivo anthelmintic potentials of Gongronema latifolium and Picralima nitida against gastrointestinal parasite (Heligmosomoides bakeri).

Gastrointestinal parasites which are responsible for soil-transmitted helminthiases cause illness globally. The control of helminthiasis depends on mass distribution of anthelmintics which has been reported for its resistance, toxicity and low efficacy. In this study, anthelmintic potentials of Gongronema latifolium and Picralima nitida which have wide application in traditional medicine were determined in vivo using Heligmosomoides bakeri a naturally occurring gastro-intestinal parasite of rodents that is closely related to highly prevalent human nematode parasites. Extracts of P. nitida at 5…

Contrasting serum biomarker profiles in two Colombian populations with different risks for progression of premalignant gastric lesions during chronic Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Colombians in coastal Tumaco have a lower incidence of Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric cancer compared to individuals fro … ients were exposed to infectious diseases beyond H. pylori such as the documented high incidence of helminthiasis and toxoplasmosis. IMPACT: Results support a prior recommendation to evaluate TFF3 and pepsinogen I/II together to predict aggressive gastric histology. Our data indicate IL-5 should be further evaluated as prognostic parameter.

Immuno-evasive tactics by schistosomes identify an effective allergy preventative.

Many chronic inflammatory diseases can be improved by helminth infection, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Allergy and helminthiasis are both associated with Th2-like immune responses; thus, defining how infection with parasites leads to reduced allergy has been particularly challenging. We sought to better understand this conundrum by evaluating host-parasite interactions involved in Th2 immunity in human schistosomiasis. Immune cells were cultured with schistosomes and the effect on CD23, an IgE receptor associated with resistance in schistosomiasis, was evaluated. Cells treated wit…

Intestinal helminthes and/or Toxocara infection are unrelated to anti-HBs titers in seven-year-old children vaccinated at birth with recombinant hepatitis B vaccine.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the possible effect of nematode infection on anti-HBs antibody levels in the serum of seven-year-old schoolchildren vaccinated at birth with the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. Anti-HBs and anti HBc antibodies were evaluated in the sera of 100 schoolchildren with at least one intestinal nematode and/or a positive serological reaction for anti-Toxocara antibodies and in 95 schoolchildren without intestinal helminthiasis or serum anti-Toxocara antibodies. Both groups were from public elementary schools located on the urban periphery of Vitória, ES, …

Inventory of helminth parasites in Caatinga anurans from Northeastern Brazil.

Biological inventories are essential tools for understanding parasite diversity. In this study, we describe the helminth parasite communities associated with anuran amphibians from five localities within the Caatinga domain of Northeastern Brazil. A total of 1,198 individuals, belonging to 22 species and six anuran families (Bufonidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Microhylidae, Odontoprhynidae, and Phyllomedusidae), were examined. Of these, 629 specimens (52.5%) were parasitized, and 27,004 helminths were recovered. The helminths represented 34 taxa, including 24 Nematoda, 7 Digenea, 1 Cestoda, a

Helminth Infections in Wild Golden Monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) in Rwanda.

Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to extant primates, with effects that are immediate and time delayed. Identifying how habitat loss affects wildlife, particularly vulnerable populations, is important to understand the mechanisms that can lead to population decline. Golden monkeys are a subspecies of guenon with two extant populations: one larger (> 4000) on the Virunga Massif, and the other smaller (~200) in Gishwati Forest. Once connected, deforestation over five decades separated the forests of Volcanoes National Park (VNP) (on the Virunga Massif) and Gishwati Forest and decreased

Human-animal cross-host infection and environmental contamination of Soil-transmitted helminths in the Philippines: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain a significant cause of morbidity worldwide. Due to the growing complexity of its transmission dynamics, which involve cross-host infections and persisting environmental contamination, the control strategies against STH continue to face drawbacks. In the Philippines, literature exploring the tripartite arm of the One Health approach remains scant; thus, to strengthen the integration of the One Health framework in the current Philippine One Health agenda, a comprehensive mapping of the local literature supporting this concept is nec

Comparative assessment of Mini-FLOTAC, McMaster and semi-quantitative flotation for helminth egg examination in camel faeces.

BACKGROUND: Faecal egg counts (FECs) are essential for diagnosing helminth infections and guiding treatment decisions. For camels, no evaluations of coproscopic methods regarding precision, sensitivity and correlation between individual and pooled faecal samples are currently available. METHODS: Here, 410 camel faecal samples were collected in 2022 from South Darfur State, Sudan, and analysed to compare the semi-quantitative flotation, McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC methods in terms of precision, sensitivity, inter-rater reliability and helminth egg count correlations, as well as the effects of poo

Intestinal helminths of bats in the States of Nayarit and Veracruz, Mexico, with redescription of Bidigiticauda vivipara Chitwood.

Although surveys on bat parasites in the Americas have been conducted, information on helminths remains limited. In Mexican states such as Nayarit and Veracruz only 1 and 8 helminth species have been reported in bats, respectively. In this study, we provide new helminthological records for bats using morphological techniques. Also, the 28S rRNA gene of specimens from several helminth taxa was successfully amplified and sequenced. To confirm the identification at the generic level, and in some cases at the specific level, and the genealogical relationships of the parasites, we performed the phy

Characterizing the Helminth Community of the Mountain Gazelle (Gazella gazella Pallas, 1766) Through DNA Metabarcoding.

PURPOSE: Understanding parasite diversity in wild and captive animal populations is vital for their individual health and ecosystem dynamics. The helminth community in mountain gazelles (Gazella gazella Pallas, 1766), particularly in the isolated northernmost population in Türkiye, remains poorly understood, posing challenges for conservation. This study aimed to identify and compare the diversity of helminths in captive and free-ranging mountain gazelles in Hatay, Türkiye, while assessing potential zoonotic risks. METHODS: We collected a total of 188 fresh fecal samples from both captive and

An extensive survey on helminth community of Caretta caretta from the neritic feeding grounds of Northwestern Adriatic sea.

The opportunistic diet of loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, their long life-span and migratory behavior contribute to shaping the diversity of the gastrointestinal helminthic community. Heteroxenous helminths are also sentinels of marine environmental health, reflecting any perturbation of the trophic chain and, indirectly, of abiotic components of the ecosystem. With the aim of studying the helminth community of a top predator such as the loggerhead sea turtle C. caretta, parasites were collected from the digestive tract of 157 individuals, stranded dead along NW Adriatic Sea in the pe

Intestinal helminths in farmed pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus): Hematological and histopathological effects.

Biosecurity in aquaculture is essential to reduce disease burden and ensure sustainability. Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) is a key species in South American aquaculture, yet parasitic threats to its health remain understudied. We analyzed intestinal helminth and assessed their effects on the health of 34 farmed pacu reared in intensive and semi-intensive systems in Santa Fe, Argentina, using parasitological, hematological, and histopathological approaches. Three parasite taxa were identified: the digenean Dadaytrema oxycephala (∼65 % prevalence; mean abundance: ∼3 parasites/fish), the nematod

Endoscopic Monitoring of Intestinal Parasites in the European Chub (Squalius cephalus).

Quantifying intestinal parasite load in freshwater fish requires the development of reliable, minimally invasive methods. We evaluated the use of a very thin and flexible endoscope to detect and quantify acanthocephalan parasites in 25 European chubs (Squalius cephalus). The presence and number of parasites, as estimated using the endoscope, were correlated with dissection-based counts, especially in the anterior part of the intestine accessible via the insertion tube. Accuracy declined in highly infected fish due to overlapping parasites, but endoscopy still provides an accurate evaluation of

Protocol for spatial prediction of soil transmitted helminth prevalence in the Western Pacific region using a meta-analytical approach.

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections are estimated to impact 24% of the world's population and are responsible for chronic and debilitating morbidity. Disadvantaged communities are among the worst affected and are further marginalized as infection prevalence fuels the poverty cycle. Ambitious targets have been set to eliminate STH infections, but accurate epidemiological data will be required to inform appropriate interventions. This paper details the protocol for an analysis that aims to produce spatial prediction mapping of STH prevalence in the Western Pacific Region (WPR)
