Clinical manifestations and outcome of Mpox infection in Qatar: An observational study during the 2022 outbreak.

Mpox emerged in May 2022 as a global outbreak, mostly in hitherto non-endemic countries. To describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of mpox in Qatar, data were retrospectively retrieved for all laboratory-confirmed mpox cases diagnosed in Qatar between May and November 2022. Twelve cases were identified; of which 10 were males, and the median age was 33.5 years (IQR 24.5-37.5). Recent sexual exposure was reported in 9 patients, 6 of which were outside Qatar. Seven individuals reported exclusive heterosexual contact. Pleomorphic skin lesions were present in all cases, with ano

Religious trauma and moral injury from LGBTQA+ conversion practices.

Religion-based LGBTQA + conversion practices frame all people as potential heterosexuals whose gender aligns with their birth sex (in a cisgender binary model of male and female sexes). Deviation from this heterosexual cisgender social identity model is cast as curable 'sexual brokenness'. However, research shows conversion practices are harmful, and particularly associated with increased experiences of abuse, mental health diagnoses, and suicidality. This paper explores their contribution to the particular harms of moral injury and religious trauma, drawing firstly on the foundational moral i

Possible Neurobiological Underpinnings of Homosexuality and Gender Dysphoria.

Although frequently discussed in terms of sex dimorphism, the neurobiology of sexual orientation and identity is unknown. We report multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data, including cortical thickness (Cth), subcortical volumes, and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging, from 27 transgender women (TrW), 40 transgender men (TrM), and 80 heterosexual (40 men) and 60 homosexual cisgender controls (30 men). These data show that whereas homosexuality is linked to cerebral sex dimorphism, gender dysphoria primarily involves cerebral networks mediating self-body perception. Among th

The Psychology of Gay Men's Cuckolding Fantasies.

Cuckolding (also known as troilism) is a sexual interest in which one obtains sexual arousal from the experience of a romantic partner engaging in sexual activity with someone else. The present study investigated fantasies about and experiences with cuckolding in a large and diverse sample of predominately gay-identified men (N = 580). Compared to previous research focusing on heterosexual men's cuckolding fantasies, our results indicate that gay men's cuckolding fantasies share many common elements; however, they differ in some important ways. Most notably, interracial and BDSM themes do not

The impact of childhood gender expression on childhood sexual abuse and psychopathology among young men who have sex with men.

Young men who have sex with men (MSM) are a risk group highly vulnerable to HIV infection and psychiatric symptoms are direct predictors of sexual risk behavior in MSM. Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with psychiatric symptomology in adolescence, and MSM are disproportionately impacted by CSA compared to heterosexuals. Some evidence suggests that childhood gender nonconformity, a natural variation of human gender expression, is more common in MSM than heterosexual males and places MSM at greater risk for CSA. This study examined whether or not childhood gender expression moderated t

Relationship factors and quality among mixed-orientation couples.

Mixed-orientation couples are defined as a heterosexual couple in which 1 partner experiences same-sex attraction and the other does not. Despite the fact that there is a sizable number of mixed-orientation couples in the U.S. adult population, few researchers have studied this population, and thus, there is limited understanding of these relationships. The authors examined the degree to which relationship commitment, partner-focused forgivingness, and marital values were associated with relationship quality, and how these variables predicted relationship quality. The total sample (N = 265) co

Intimate partner violence: IPV in the LGBT community.

Nationally, the rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) individuals are similar to or greater than rates for heterosexuals. Many have experienced psychological and physical abuse as sexual minorities, making it difficult for them to seek help for IPV. Physician behavior, such as not assuming that all patients are heterosexual, being nonjudgmental, and using inclusive language, can empower LGBT patients to disclose IPV. Also, physicians should ascertain the degree to which the patient is out. The threat of being outed can be an aspect of the

In this decade, the global prevalence of HIV-1 infection stabilized at 0.8% (range: 0.7-0.9%). However, important regional differences in trends and mode of transmission: Sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected by HIV. Since 2001, the number of people with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia increased from 650,000 to 1,5 million in 2007. Overall trends were stable in Central and Western Europe. Heterosexual and homosexual transmission accounts for the largest proportion in these regions. Transmission among injecting drug users has decreased. Similar trends have been observed in Italy: in 20

Identifying opportunities for sexually transmitted infection prevention: analysis of critical points in the care pathways of patients with gonorrhoea.

We applied the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to systematically analyse the care pathway of patients diagnosed with gonorrhoea to identify potential intervention opportunities for preventive action. Data were collected on individuals with culture-positive gonococcal infection during 27 February 2003 to 08 January 2004. Qualitative data were gathered within individual semi-structured interviews. Two hundred and twenty-three gonorrhoea patient episodes were evaluated. The median interval between presentation and treatment was significantly longer in females and

Sexually transmitted Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and HIV-1 infections in two at-risk populations in Barcelona: female street prostitutes and STI clinic attendees.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and HIV-1 infections in female street prostitutes and STI clinic attendees in Barcelona. DESIGN: This was a prospective study carried out in two four-month periods over two years. Urine specimens were tested for CT and NG using a PCR pooling algorithm. Among street prostitutes HIV-1 testing in urine was also carried out. RESULTS: The prevalences of CT, NG, and HIV-1 in female street prostitutes (n=301) were 4.7%, 3.7%, and 1.0%, respectively. Women from Eastern Europe had the highest prevalence

Officer friendly and the tough cop:gays and lesbians navigate homophobia and policing.

Despite attempts to expand social diversity, policing is still dominated by a white, masculine, heterosexual ethos. As a consequence, employment of lesbians and gay men as police officers may be especially threatening to members of this occupation. Within the context of potential hostility and homophobia, nontraditional officers must negotiate their contradictory presence on the police force. This paper investigates that negotiation. Using the Bem Sex Role Inventory and open-ended survey data from a sample of "out" and "closeted" gay and lesbian police officers, we ask how gays and lesbians ma

Ciprofloxacin resistance emerges in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Victoria, 1998 to 2001.

Notifications of gonorrhoea in Victoria increased suddenly in the late 1990s, from an average of 375 cases per year from 1993 to 1997, to over 700 cases in 2000. This paper describes the susceptibility to ciprofloxacin of isolates of N. gonorrhoeae in Victoria from 1998 to 2001, and relates these to the reported epidemiologic characteristics of the cases. The proportion of all isolates of N. gonorrhoeae that was resistant to ciprofloxacin rose from 3 per cent in 1998 to 11 per cent in 2001. Among homosexual and bisexual men, resistant isolates remained rare (< 1 per cent). Among heterosexual m

To notify or not to notify: STD patients' perspectives of partner notification in Seattle.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To obtain patients' perspectives on why only some partners are notified in partner-notification programs, the cornerstone of sexually transmitted disease (STD) control, although low proportions of partners are located and evaluated. GOALS: To describe patterns of partner notification reported by persons with STD infection. STUDY DESIGN: In-depth interviews conducted in Seattle with 60 heterosexual men and women with gonorrhea, chlamydial infection, or nongonoccocal urethritis, and 19 men with gonorrhea reporting sex with men (MSM) were tape recorded, transcribed ve

Utility of quantitative enzyme immunoassay reactivity for predicting human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity in low- and high-prevalence populations.

To assess the utility of quantitative enzyme immunoassay (EIA) reactivity for predicting human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity, we evaluated 22,823 serum samples from homo- and bisexual men, heterosexual intravenous drug users, and other heterosexuals with initial screening by EIA, retesting of reactive samples in duplicate, and confirmatory Western blot (immunoblot) testing. Quantitative EIA reactivity was determined by a mean of the optical density ratio of the three assays performed for each reactive specimen. A total of 1,773 samples (7.8%) were repeatedly reactive, and 1,747 (7.7%)

Risk factors for HIV infection among injection drug users: results of blinded surveys in drug treatment centers, King County, Washington 1988-1991.

Among injection drug users (IDUs) entering drug treatment in King County, Washington between 1988 and 1991, we investigated HIV seroprevalence in relationship to demographic, sexual, and drug-use characteristics. Eighty-two of 3,039 (2.7%) IDUs tested HIV positive. Gay or bisexual men had the highest HIV prevalence (37.1%), followed by lesbian or bisexual women (8.3%), heterosexual men (2.3%), and heterosexual women (1.5%). American Indians were more likely to be infected with HIV than were whites. Those with no permanent address were more likely to be infected than those with an address. Unex

Epidemiology of HIV infection in Africa.

HIV infection in Africa is primarily acquired through heterosexual activity, accounting for up to 80% of cases. Prostitutes and sexually promiscuous individuals are at particularly high risk of acquiring infection via this route. In the general population, women between the ages of 18 and 30 years are at increased risk of transmission. The role of cofactors, particularly concurrent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), appears to facilitate heterosexual spread. These groups represent opportunities for targeted prevention programs aimed at education, increased condom use, prompt treatment of ST

How often is genital yeast infection sexually transmitted?

We analysed data from a computer-based bank of clinical records of patients seen in a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases over a three-year period to investigate the association between genital yeast infections and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). We classified STDs as primary and secondary syphilis; gonorrhoea; lymphogranuloma venereum; trichomoniasis; scabies; pediculosis; genital herpes; warts; and molluscum contagiosum. Of a total of 2984 disease episodes among women, 1054 (35-3%) included yeast infections, whereas only 382 (6-9%) of 5501 episodes in heterosexual men were associa
