Morphometric computer-assisted image analysis of epithelial cells in different grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts 94% of all malignant lesions in the oral cavity. In the assessment of OSCC, nowadays the WHO grading system has been followed widely but due to its subjectivity, investigators applied the sophisticated technique of computer-assisted image analysis in the grading of carcinoma in larynx, lungs, esophagus, and cervix to make it more objective. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Access, analyze, and compare the cellular area (CA); cytoplasmic area (Cyt A); nuclear area (NA); nuclear perimeter (NP); nuclear form factor (NF); and nuclear-cytoplasmic rati

Semi-automatic segmentation and classification of Pap smear cells.

Cytologic screening has been widely used for detecting the cervical cancers. In this study, a semiautomatic PC-based cellular image analysis system was developed for segmenting nuclear and cytoplasmic contours and for computing morphometric and textual features to train support vector machine (SVM) classifiers to classify four different types of cells and to discriminate dysplastic from normal cells. A software program incorporating function, including image reviewing and standardized denomination of file names, was also designed to facilitate and standardize the workflow of cell analyses. Two

A review of image analysis and machine learning techniques for automated cervical cancer screening from pap-smear images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Early diagnosis and classification of a cancer type can help facilitate the subsequent clinical management of the patient. Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer affecting women worldwide and its early detection provides the opportunity to help save life. To that end, automated diagnosis and classification of cervical cancer from pap-smear images has become a necessity as it enables accurate, reliable and timely analysis of the condition's progress. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art as articulated in prominent recent publicatio

A new 2.5D representation for lymph node detection using random sets of deep convolutional neural network observations.

Automated Lymph Node (LN) detection is an important clinical diagnostic task but very challenging due to the low contrast of surrounding structures in Computed Tomography (CT) and to their varying sizes, poses, shapes and sparsely distributed locations. State-of-the-art studies show the performance range of 52.9% sensitivity at 3.1 false-positives per volume (FP/vol.), or 60.9% at 6.1 FP/vol. for mediastinal LN, by one-shot boosting on 3D HAAR features. In this paper, we first operate a preliminary candidate generation stage, towards -100% sensitivity at the cost of high FP levels (-40 per pat

An Evidence-Constrained LLM Framework for Automated Abdominal CTA Aneurysm Analysis and Reporting.

Abdominal computed tomography angiography (CTA) aneurysm analysis requires simultaneous localization, measurement, and anatomical attribution of multiple candidate lesions across a continuous three-dimensional vascular network, followed by translation of these findings into clinically reviewable CTA report drafts. Existing automated approaches largely focus on segmentation, measurement, or candidate detection, whereas direct large language model (LLM) interpretation of CTA images remains vulnerable to factual errors, hallucinations, and safety concerns. We propose an evidence-constrained large

A comprehensive study on the multi-class cervical cancer diagnostic prediction on pap smear images using a fusion-based decision from ensemble deep convolutional neural network.

The diagnosis of cervical dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and confirmed carcinoma cases is more easily perceived by commercially available and current research-based decision support systems when the scenario of pathologists to patient ratio is small. The treatment modalities for such diagnosis rely exclusively on precise identification of dysplasia stages as followed by The Bethesda System. The classification based on The Bethesda System is a multiclass problem, which is highly relevant and vital. Reliance on image interpretation, when done manually, introduces inter-observer variability and mak

Multivariate tensor-based brain anatomical surface morphometry via holomorphic one-forms.

Here we introduce multivariate tensor-based surface morphometry using holomorphic one-forms to study brain anatomy. We computed new statistics from the Riemannian metric tensors that retain the full information in the deformation tensor fields. We introduce two different holomorphic one-forms that induce different surface conformal parameterizations. We applied this framework to 3D MRI data to analyze hippocampal surface morphometry in Alzheimer's Disease (AD; 26 subjects), lateral ventricular surface morphometry in HIV/AIDS (19 subjects) and cortical surface morphometry in Williams Syndrome (

Computer-aided diagnosis of early-stage Retinopathy of Prematurity in neonatal fundus images using artificial intelligence.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a retinal disorder affecting preterm babies, which can lead to permanent blindness without treatment. Early-stage ROP diagnosis is vital in providing optimal therapy for the neonates. The proposed study predicts early-stage ROP from neonatal fundus images using Machine Learning (ML) classifiers and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based pre-trained networks. The characteristic demarcation lines and ridges in early stage ROP are segmented utilising a novel Swin U-Net. 2000 Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptors were extracted from the segment

Local Binary Patterns Descriptor Based on Sparse Curvelet Coefficients for False-Positive Reduction in Mammograms.

Breast Cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women across the globe. Automatic detection of breast cancer using Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system suffers from false positives (FPs). Thus, reduction of FP is one of the challenging tasks to improve the performance of the diagnosis systems. In the present work, new FP reduction technique has been proposed for breast cancer diagnosis. It is based on appropriate integration of preprocessing, Self-organizing map (SOM) clustering, region of interest (ROI) extraction, and FP reduction. In preprocessing, contrast enhancement of mammograms has b

DGCD-3D: Difference-guided conditional diffusion model for low-field 3D MRI enhancement to assist stroke assessment.

Low-field (LF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in assisting clinicians with rapid stroke diagnosis. However, its inherent limitations, such as low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and suboptimal image quality, make accurate stroke lesion identification challenging. To address this, we propose a Difference-Guided Conditional Diffusion Model (DGCD-3D) to enhance image quality of LF MRI while preserving structural integrity of stroke lesions. Specifically, the model incorporates a difference-adaptive forward diffusion process that guides the diffusion dynamics based on difference

Automated Diagnosis of Bone Metastasis by Classifying Bone Scintigrams Using a Self-defined Deep Learning Model.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer can develop bone metastasis when a solid tumor invades the bone, which is the third most commonly affected site by metastatic cancer, after the lung and liver. The early detection of bone metastases is crucial for making appropriate treatment decisions and increasing survival rates. Deep learning, a mainstream branch of machine learning, has rapidly become an effective approach to analyzing medical images. OBJECTIVE: To automatically diagnose bone metastasis with bone scintigraphy, in this work, we proposed to cast the bone metastasis diagnosis problem into au

Deep convolutional neural networks for multiplanar lung nodule detection: Improvement in small nodule identification.

PURPOSE: Early detection of lung cancer is of importance since it can increase patients' chances of survival. To detect nodules accurately during screening, radiologists would commonly take the axial, coronal, and sagittal planes into account, rather than solely the axial plane in clinical evaluation. Inspired by clinical work, the paper aims to develop an accurate deep learning framework for nodule detection by a combination of multiple planes. METHODS: The nodule detection system is designed in two stages, multiplanar nodule candidate detection, multiscale false positive (FP) reduction. At

Methodology for Registration of Shrinkage Tumors in Head-and-Neck CT Studies.

Tumor shrinkage occurs in many patients undergoing radiotherapy for head-and-neck (H&N) cancer. However, one-to-one correspondence is not always available between voxels of two image sets. This makes intensity-based deformable registration difficult and inaccurate. In this paper, we describe a novel method to increase the performance of the registration in presence of tumor shrinkage. The method combines an image modification procedure and a fast symmetric Demons algorithm to register CT images acquired at planning and posttreatment fractions. The image modification procedure modifies the imag

Cone-beam imaging in dentistry.

Cone-beam imaging has gained broad acceptance in dentistry in the last 5 years. The purpose of this review is to describe the use in dentistry and consider issues requiring further development. Cone-beam machines emit an x-ray beam shaped liked a cone rather than a fan as in conventional computed tomography (CT) machines. After this beam passes through the patient the remnant beam is captured on an amorphous silicon flat panel or image intensifier/charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The beam diameter ranges from 4 to 30 cm and exposes the head in one pass around the patient capturing from 16

Research progress and clinical utility of multi-parameter orbital MRI in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), the most common orbital disease in adults, is a specific autoimmune condition closely associated with thyroid dysfunction, primarily affecting orbital fat and extraocular muscles. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) holds unique value in diagnosing TAO, staging disease activity and progression evaluation by providing multidimensional information on tissue morphology, edema, fat infiltration, and fibrosis. This review examines conventional and advanced MRI techniques-such as T1WI, T2WI, diffusion-weighted imaging, dynamic contrast-enhanced M
