Insecticidal bed nets and filariasis transmission in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Global efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis are based on the annual mass administration of antifilarial drugs to reduce the microfilaria reservoir available to the mosquito vector. Insecticide-treated bed nets are being widely used in areas in which filariasis and malaria are coendemic. METHODS: We studied five villages in which five annual mass administrations of antifilarial drugs, which were completed in 1998, reduced the transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti, one of the nematodes that cause lymphatic filariasis. A total of 21,899 anopheles mosquitoes were collected for 26

Response of Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense in zebu cattle in North Cameroon to prophylactic treatment with two formulations of isometamidium.

We tested the efficacy of two formulations of isometamidium in a tsetse-infested farm in North Cameroon from 20 August 2000 to 5 January 2001. A total of 90 adult cattle were used in three groups of 30 each corresponding to two treated and one untreated control. Drug efficacies were evaluated in terms of reduction of parasite incidence in the host's blood, maintenance of packed-cell volume (PCV) and weight gains. Both drugs reduced the incidence of parasites even though re-infections 2 weeks after treatment were common. PCV values were similar in both treated groups but higher than in the untr

[African Program for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC): Onchocerca volvulus transmission by Simulium damnosum s. l. in two regions of the Central African Republic].

Entomological baseline data were collected in the villages of Zinga and Boali-Falls in Central African Republic (CAR) in view of the long term impact assessment of community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI). Morphological determinations revealed that flies caught in both sites belong to the sub-group Sou/Sq. In Boali, the nuisance was relatively high with biting rates averaging 243 bites/man/day, with a parous rate of 61.6% and a crude annual transmission potential (ATP) of 8,259 infective larvae/man/year; and the average number of infective larvae per 1,000 parous flies was 177. Chagas disease: current epidemiological trends after the interruption of vectorial and transfusional transmission in the Southern Cone countries.

Chagas disease, named after Carlos Chagas who first described it in 1909, exists only on the American Continent. It is caused by a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs and by blood transfusion. Chagas disease has two successive phases, acute and chronic. The acute phase lasts 6 to 8 weeks. After several years of starting the chronic phase, 20% to 35% of the infected individuals, depending on the geographical area will develop irreversible lesions of the autonomous nervous system in the heart, esophagus, colon and the peripheral nervous system. Dietary inclusion of Hermetia illucens larvae meal modifies caecal microbiota diversity and composition in barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara).

In the present study, we examined the influence of the dietary inclusion of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae meal on the diversity and composition of the bacterial community in the caecum of Barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara). A total of 54 partridges were divided equally into three treatment groups. The control group (C) received a diet containing corn-soybean meals and the two experimental groups received diets in which soybean meal protein was partially substituted with BSF larvae meal at proportions of 25% (H25) and 50% (H50). The bacterial community of the caecal samples was analysed in

Residual knockdown effects of pyrethroid and neonicotinoid-treated nets on Rhodnius prolixus.

Chagas disease remains an important public health concern across the Americas, affecting both human and animal populations. The triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus, an obligate hematophagous vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, is commonly associated with environments where domestic and working animals are housed. Military working dogs (MWDs) deployed or stationed in endemic or expansion zones are particularly vulnerable to infection, which can lead to severe clinical disease and reduced operational readiness. This study evaluated the residual knockdown efficacy of esfenvalerate- and dinotefuran-treated

Protective efficacy and user acceptability of DEET and Vetiver essential oil repellents against Anopheles dirus (Diptera: Culicidae): semi-field and community-based evaluations.

Topical repellents are considered as valuable supplementary tools for reducing vector-borne disease transmission risk by preventing mosquito bites. Plant-based formulations have attracted growing interest as safer, more acceptable alternatives to synthetic repellents, yet evidence for their real-world effectiveness remains limited. This study evaluated the protective efficacy of two topical repellents, DEET and Vetiver essential oil (Vetiver E.O.) against Anopheles dirus Peyton & Harrison, a main malaria vector species, through semi-field system (SFS) trials. These tests were followed by a nin

Optimizing the impact of a novel spatial repellent on malaria incidence in Western Kenya.

Progress in reducing global malaria incidence has slowed in recent years, demonstrating the need for new vector control tools to complement existing interventions in reaching global malaria control targets. Spatial repellents (SRs) can reduce pathogen transmission by altering the behaviors of Anopheles spp. mosquito vectors. A recent cluster-randomized control trial in western Kenya found that SRs reduced first-time infections by 33.4% in a highly-endemic setting with substantial insecticide resistance and high coverage of insecticide treated nets. We modeled the likely impact of the SR interv

The costs and logistics of distributing 'forest packs' containing novel vector control tools to forest-exposed populations in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria incidence in the Greater Mekong Subregion has been on the decline, and most remaining malaria risk in the region is concentrated among hard-to-reach populations, especially those with exposure to forested areas. New vector control tools focused on outdoor protection in forest settings are needed for these populations. METHODS: The delivery of a 'forest pack' containing a volatile pyrethroid spatial repellent (VPSR), a topical repellent, and pyrethroid treatment of clothing was evaluated in an operational study in Cambodia. Costs were collected using micro-costing approache

Inactivation of Sebol Induces Male Infertility in Spodoptera exigua via Arrested Meiosis: A Potential Molecular Target for Genetics-Based Sterile Insect Technique.

The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, is a significant agricultural pest managed primarily through chemical insecticides, which present environmental concerns and promote resistance. Genetics-based sterile insect technique (gSIT) provides an alternative by inducing male sterility without irradiation. In this study, we cloned the S. exigua boule gene (Sebol), a 741-nucleotide open reading frame encoding a 246-amino-acid protein with an RNA recognition motif. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed its conservation across Lepidoptera and high similarity to orthologs in Spodoptera litura and Helicoverpa

What you eat is what we need: using ants to detect spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) DNA.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of invasive species such as the spotted lanternfly (SLF, Lycorma delicatula) is critical for effective management including eradication efforts and limiting further spread. SLF excretes honeydew containing detectable DNA, providing a unique opportunity to leverage environmental DNA (eDNA) for its detection. This study introduces the ant-derived DNA (antDNA) approach, utilizing ants as 'honeydew samplers' to detect SLF DNA. We validated the effectiveness of this method through three experiments. RESULTS: Using SLF-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we consist

Impact of a spatial repellent product on Anopheles and non-Anopheles mosquitoes in Sumba, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, contributed to 5% of malaria cases nationally in 2020, with other mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue and filariasis also being endemic. Monitoring of spatial and temporal vector species compositions and bionomic traits is an efficient method for generating evidence towards intervention strategy optimization and meeting disease elimination goals. METHODS: The impact of a spatial repellent (SR) on human biting mosquitoes was evaluated as part of a parent cluster-randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, in Sumba, East Nusa

Effects of X-ray irradiation on the fitness of the established invasive pest fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda.

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda has spread to Africa, Asia, and Oceania, posing a serious threat to global agriculture. We estimated the appropriate dose of X-ray sterilization for S. frugiperda using an X-ray irradiation instrument to investigate environmentally acceptable control techniques, laying the framework for future applications of sterile insect technology (SIT) to manage the pest environmentally-friendly. RESULTS: This study is the first to investigate the effects of X-ray irradiation on the growth, development, survival, reproduction, and flight of S. frugiperda. The results sho

Pheromone Deployment Strategies for Mating Disruption of a Vineyard Mealybug.

The mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Signoret), is a primary vineyard pest in California and other grape-growing regions throughout the World. Mating disruption programs are commercially available to manage Pl. ficus, but widespread adoption has been limited, in part, by high costs compared with insecticide programs. To improve mating disruption economic effectiveness, different deployment technologies (passive, aerosol, and microencapsulated formulations) were individually examined. Adult male Pl. ficus captures in pheromone traps and categorical ratings of vine infestation or crop damage suggest

Efficiencies of stationary sampling tools for the tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in western Kenya.

Monitoring the effectiveness of tsetse fly control interventions that aim to reduce transmission of African trypanosomiasis requires highly efficient sampling tools that can catch flies at low densities. The sticky small target (StS-target) has previously been shown to be more effective in sampling Glossina fuscipes fuscipes compared to the biconical trap. However, its efficiency in terms of the proportion of flies it catches out of those that visit it has not been reported. Furthermore, there are no reports on whether tsetse samples caught using the StS-target can be used for subsequent proce

Susceptibility Status of Bedbugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) Against Pyrethroid and Organophosphate Insecticides in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Cimex hemipterus resistance to residual insecticides is a growing public health concern worldwide. Herein, we report the susceptibility status of C. hemipterus against pyrethroid (permethrin) and organophosphate (dichlorvos) insecticides in Dar es Salaam. The knockdown efficacy of dichlorvos (99%) was greater than that of permethrin (43%), and mortality at the end of 24 h was also greater for dichlorvos than for permethrin. Mortality in recommended concentration of permethrin was lower than manufacturer's expectations. In contrast, similar concentrations in dichlorvos resulted into mortality o

Toxicity and oviposition deterrence of essential oils of Clinopodium nubigenum and Lavandula angustifolia against the myiasis-inducing blowfly Lucilia sericata.

Cutaneous myiasis is a severe worldwide medical and veterinary issue. In this trial the essential oil (EO) of the Andean medicinal plant species Clinopodium nubigenum (Kunth) Kuntze was evaluated for its bioactivity against the myiasis-inducing blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera Calliphoridae) and compared with that of the well-known medicinal plant species Lavandula angustifolia Mill. The EOs were analysed and tested in laboratory for their oviposition deterrence and toxicity against L. sericata adults. The physiology of EO toxicity was evaluated by enzymatic inhibition tests. The ant

Using low-cost drones to map malaria vector habitats.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing awareness that if we are to achieve the ambitious goal of malaria elimination, we must compliment indoor-based vector control interventions (such as bednets and indoor spraying) with outdoor-based interventions such as larval source management (LSM). The effectiveness of LSM is limited by our capacity to identify and map mosquito aquatic habitats. This study provides a proof of concept for the use of a low-cost (< $1000) drone (DJI Phantom) for mapping water bodies in seven sites across Zanzibar including natural water bodies, irrigated and non-irrigated rice pad

Tropical viruses approaching Europe.

During the last years, headlines about the advance of tropical infectious diseases, which are transmitted by mosquitos, become more frequent. Some of these mosquitos are classified as invasive species in Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are enhancing the observation of the geographical spread of these species. Especially the Asian tiger mosquito and the Yellow fever mosquito are in focus. In Germany the vector competency of domestic mosquito species is investigated.
