BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka is endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania donovani. Long-lasting insecticide-impregnated bed nets (LLINs) have been used for vector control, but their impact on interruption of sand fly bites remains untested in Sri Lanka. This study assessed the efficacy of LLINs as compared with untreated bed nets in reducing vector-human contact and density of Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of CL in Sri Lanka.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized trial was conducted with an intervention group (treated nets) and a control group (untreated nets) in CL-endemic sites.

Mosquito populations' selective pressure arising from the widespread and prolonged use of insecticides, especially pyrethroids, for both agricultural usages and public health outcomes, has immensely contributed to the emergence and heavily spread of insecticide resistance. In this study, a systematic review identified eight eligible case-control or cohort studies published between 2015 and 2025 across sub-Saharan Africa that reported both allele and/or genotype frequencies of L1014F and L1014S. The predictive performance and inferential robustness of a Bayesian meta-analytic model were applied…

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remain a key intervention in malaria prevention. However, their protective effectiveness may decline with physical deterioration, even when usage remains high. This study assessed the impact of ITN physical integrity on children's exposure to Anopheles mosquito bites over a three-year period in Mali, using gSG6-P1 biomarker as an innovative immuno-epidemiological indicator of human exposure.
METHODS: A three-year prospective cohort study was conducted from 2018, 2019, and 2020 in two rural health districts of Mali: Kéniéba using Yorkool® ITNs and Ki

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality in at-risk populations, especially in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite reductions in malaria burden owing to the scale-up of effective interventions, there are concerns that long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) effects may not be sustained owing to widespread insecticide resistance and differential impacts of LLIN on vector species. In this study, we aimed to test the effect of different LLIN products and other environmental factors on the ecological niche of three mosquito vector s

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an important mosquito borne infectious disease which is mainly transmitted by Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (1901) in China. At present, vector control remains an important means to prevent and control vector-borne diseases including JE. The development of insecticide resistance has seriously threatened the effectiveness of insecticide-based vector control programmes. Therefore, understanding insecticide resistance in the target pest is essential to inform evidence-based vector control. In Mianyang City of Sichuan Province of China, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus is the do

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been a widely used malaria prevention method for decades. In South Sudan, LLINs are typically distributed by volunteers who use paper-based systems to collect distribution data. Paper-based systems are simple to use but have a higher occurrence of data inaccuracies and can hinder the timely use of data for decision-making. In 2022, a digital tool was introduced to collect data during the LLIN campaign in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG). The tool aimed to improve the accuracy of data entry and enable data to be used in real-time for decisio

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia continues to grapple with a persistent malaria burden, characterized by ongoing transmission and recurrent outbreaks. Human behavior influences both malaria exposure and the effectiveness of vector interventions, complicating malaria control efforts. Implementing tailored strategies that account for the complex interplay between human activities and vector behavior remains a challenge in both high- and low-transmission areas in Ethiopia, particularly for vulnerable highland populations and temporary labor migrants, due to lack of data. The aim of this study was to examine

BACKGROUND: There are several indications that pesticides used in agriculture contribute to the emergence and spread of resistance of mosquitoes to vector control insecticides. However, the impact of such an indirect selection pressure has rarely been quantified and the molecular mechanisms involved are still poorly characterized. In this context, experimental selection with different agrochemical mixtures was conducted in Anopheles gambiae. The multi-generational impact of agrochemicals on insecticide resistance was evaluated by phenotypic and molecular approaches.
METHODS: Mosquito larvae w…

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is the most prevalent plague in crops associated with a reduction in corn production by up to 34%. Pesticides have been used to reduce this plague, but they cause several environmental problems including resistance, ecological imbalance, and toxicity to the final consumer. The use of plant extracts has been an effective manner of eradicating this plague from crop plantations. In this sense, the hexane, EtOAc, and EtOH/H2O fractions from EtOH extract from different parts of Cenostigma pluviosum were investigated against this fall armyworm leading to a per

The growing population and global food demands have encouraged the use of pesticides to increase agricultural yields; however, the irrational use of pesticides threatens human health and the environment. Carbaryl (CRBL) is the most widespread insecticide and severely affects soil, water systems, and human health. Thus, it is crucial to monitor CRBL residues in the environment and vegetable samples. This study reports the rapid and sensitive electrochemical detection of CRBL based on a pyrochlore-type lanthanum tin oxide (LSO) nanoparticles (NPs)-modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE).

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that the knockdown resistance gene (Kdr) L1014F and acetylcholinesterase-1 gene (Ace-1R) G119S mutations involved in pyrethroid and carbamate resistance in Anopheles gambiae influence malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. This is likely due to changes in the behaviour, life history and vector competence and capacity of An. gambiae. In the present study, performed as part of a two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of household screening plus a novel insecticide delivery system (In2Care Eave Tubes), we investigated the distribution

BACKGROUND: The invasive insect Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) is an important pest of several red grape varieties. The yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum (Niehaus), which is associated with D. suzukii, strongly attracts flies and stimulates them to feed on yeast-laden food. In the present study, a formulation based on H. uvarum culture with spinosad insecticide was applied to the foliage of vineyards and control of D. suzukii was compared to applying spinosad to the whole plant. After successful H. uvarum and insecticide application in the vineyard, we tested additional H. uvarum-based formulations w
