BACKGROUND: Industrial complex (IC) residence is associated with higher cancer incidence in adults and children. However, the effect on young adults and the residence duration are not well described. Eight olivine beads found at the Middle Chalcolithic site of Tel Tsaf (ca. 5,200-4,700 cal. BC), Jordan Valley, Israel, underscore a new facet of interregional exchange for this period. Israel has no official prevention policy at present against perinatal and horizontal transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in newborns and children at risk. We have studied 288 Israeli asymptomatic male homosexuals (MHS) to determine the prevalence of antibodies to HTLVI and HTLVIII and their correlation with impairments of the immune system and serum interferon (IFN). In this study we describe a new endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis at Keziot in southern Israel, and the pattern of the disease among a group of soldiers newly based in the area. Interviews and physical examinations were conducted on 296 soldiers, and 247 were subjected to a leishmanin skin test. Positive tests were recorded in 18% of the soldiers; in 16% of them Keziot was identified as the area where the infection was acquired. An outbreak of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) was investigated by studying free-living and parasitic stages of ticks in two settlements of equal size and population located 20 km apart in the Negev Desert. BACKGROUND: Israel's public mental health system faces a persistent shortage of personnel alongside increasing demand for services, challenges that were further intensified by the events of October 7.
