Learning from human and chemical languages to predict biological function.

Understanding how molecular structure encodes biological function remains a grand challenge in drug discovery. Here, we present PubCheF-1, a deep learning model that predicts literature-derived biological function directly from chemical structure. PubCheF-1 was trained on a dataset linking molecules to labels derived from the scientific articles in which they appear, a strategy that connects disparate compounds through the language used to describe their functionalities. When tasked with identifying inhibitors of β-lactamases, including enzymes considered largely refractory to inhibition, PubC…

The language of the immune system: Part 1: Cytokine conversations and conversationalists.

The immune system is always acting to protect the body from the microbial world, especially at the openings of the body but also helps to ma … ugh cell-cell interactions, with different soluble molecules including cytokines. Cytokines are the language of the immune system and define the progression of the subsequent immune response. Each cytokine may elicit its own responses but by acting together in a conversation they communicate and coordinate the intended actions to maintain the status quo or …

Language Dysfunction Associated with Pathological Brain Connectivity in Children with Epilepsy.

Language impairment is common in childhood epilepsy and may arise in part from disruption of the distributed brain networks that support language. In self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS)-the most common focal epilepsy of childhood-hyperconnectivity has been linked to poor language outcomes, but the specific network patterns associated with language dysfunction remain unclear, limiting the ability to target neurostimulation rationally. We recorded high-density EEG from 27 children with SeLECTS and 29 age-matched controls during verb generation and rest, and quantified func…

Scientific quality of colonoscopy-related YouTube videos in the Turkish language.

Colonoscopy is the primary method for diagnosing colonic diseases and detecting precancerous lesions, thereby playing a crucial role in the prevention of colorectal cancer. However, the scientific quality and reliability of these videos require systematic assessment. In addition, the scientific quality of Turkish colonoscopy videos on YouTube remains unexplored. This study used internationally recognized scoring systems to assess the scientific quality of Turkish colonoscopy-related videos on YouTube. This cross-sectional study analyzed 156 Turkish-language YouTube videos on colonoscopy, with …

Development of FamTAM Intervention for Speech and Language Pathologists and Family Members.

Children with complex communication needs, including approximately one-third of children with autism, use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to meet their daily communication needs. AAC includes gestures, sign language, picture symbols, and computerized systems to augment or replace speech. Family support and training are essential for effective AAC implementation, but few interventions exist. We describe the iterative development of the FamTAM Intervention-an aided language modeling training and coaching intervention designed to support caregiver implementation and their school-…

The Language of Bias: Labeling and Its Impact on Emergency Department Patients.

Stigmatizing language is prevalent in emergency nursing practice and has significant implications for patient care, clinical judgment, and health equity. Labels such as "drug-seeker," "frequent flyer," and "non-compliant" are often applied without comprehensive assessment and can lead to delayed treatment, inadequate pain management, misdiagnosis, and erosion of trust between patients and emergency clinicians. These terms disproportionately affect marginalized populations, including individuals with substance use disorders, individuals with mental health conditions, racialized minorities, and …

Large Language Models as Diagnostic Tools in Nephrology: Helpful, With Limitations.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used to support diagnostic decision-making. It is unclear, however, whether their performance on knowledge and examination tasks translates to interpreting clinical case vignettes, especially when a complete diagnosis requires specifying several related elements, such as triggers, organ manifestations, or complications. METHODS: We carried out a vignette-based benchmark study using 101 case reports from the German-language journal Die Nephrologie to assess six current language models from the Anthropic, Google, and Open AI compan…

Digital linguistic sovereignty and Kazakh language policy in the digital environment.

This article examines the impact of the digital environment on the status and place of language. The focus is on the concept of digital linguistic sovereignty, understood as a nation's ability to ensure the functional competitiveness of the language in the age of artificial intelligence and big data. In this regard, Kazakhstan presents a unique case study of a country transitioning from traditional language protection to the active construction of digital sovereignty. As a state undergoing active nation-building, the country simultaneously demonstrates one of the highest levels of digitalisati…

The impact of language context on inter-brain synchrony in bilingual families.

BACKGROUND: Bilingualism is increasingly common in families worldwide, yet bilingual individuals remain underrepresented in developmental neuroscience research. In simultaneous bilingualism, children typically acquire two languages simultaneously from birth, while their parents tend to learn the societal language later in life. These differences in language acquisition may influence how parents and children communicate, particularly when interacting in a second language. Neural synchrony, the temporal alignment of brain activity between individuals, has emerged as a key mechanism underlying so…

The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Speech and Language Therapy: Attitudes and Expectations.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) shows promise to support the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in medicine and therapy. However, ethics is a priority concern in the development and implementation of AI across sectors. Common ethical themes in the healthcare literature of the last 5 years surround algorithmic bias, accountability, privacy, transparency and trust issues. The question arises how these challenges apply to speech and language therapy (SLT). Stakeholder attitudes towards the use of AI in healthcare have been investigated for the populations of physicians, med…

The Influence of Grammatical Gender on Object Conceptualization Is Weak and Language-Dependent.

Do we make gendered associations with objects whose linguistic labels have masculine/feminine grammatical gender? This question derives from the neo-Whorfian view that language shapes our conceptualizations of the world. Previous research has provided mixed answers. Here, we present three experiments where we tested for the gender effect on object conceptualization using a word association approach: a first group of participants generated adjectives for nouns referring to objects, and a second group subsequently rated those adjectives for masculinity/femininity. In Experiment 1, with native Fr…

Modeling Memory Effects in a Head-Final Language With Category Locality.

Memory limitations have been assumed to be a major factor shaping human sentence comprehension, but characterizing memory-demanding structur … he predictions of CCG- and dependency-based integration cost most drastically diverge in head-final languages. This study conducts this crucial test using a naturalistic reading time dataset in Japanese. Our results favor CCG over dependency grammar: CCG-based integration cost predicted reading time variance of held-out data, while the dependency-based ver …

The limits of debiased clinical language models for cross-hospital generalization.

As clinical language models are increasingly deployed across healthcare institutions, ensuring equitable predictions for all demographic groups becomes critical. While fairness interventions have shown promise in medical AI, a fundamental question remains underexplored: do models that achieve fairness at one hospital maintain that fairness when deployed elsewhere? We investigated this question through extensive cross-database experiments on ICU mortality prediction, fine-tuning ClinicalBERT on MIMIC-IV and evaluating on eICU-CRD. Our findings reveal that debiasing can backfire: fairness-only t…
