PURPOSE: We present a two-generation family with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type IIb diagnosed by their ophthalmologists based on characteristic ophthalmic findings.
METHODS: A family consisting of a 33-year-old female proband and her 8- and 7-year-old children had prominent corneal nerves; eyelid, lip, and tongue nodules; and a characteristic facies. A polymerase chain reaction-based genetic assay was obtained to detect the genetic mutation most commonly associated with MEN type IIb. Serum calcitonin and urine catecholamine studies were obtained.

BACKGROUND: The DNA mismatch repair system (MMR) plays an important role in the maintenance of genomic stability. To date few studies have been performed on hMSH2 and hMLH1 expression and melanoma of the head and neck region. A study of two cases revealed no mutations of the mismatch repair genes hMSH2 and hMLH1.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To verify the possibility of implication of hMSH2 and hMLH1 alterations in melanocytic cancerogenesis, the authors examined the protein expression pattern of hMSH2 and hMLH1 by immunohistochemistry in 9 paraffin-embedded oral melanoma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe vertical distraction osteogenesis of a scapular flap and removable lip support for oral rehabilitation after surgical creation of an ablative defect of the mandible.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the left lower gingiva underwent segmental mandibulectomy for tumor ablation and reconstruction with a scapular bone flap. To augment bone height of this flap, vertical distraction osteogenesis was performed. After denture fabrication, a removable lip support was placed between the implant-supported denture and the lower lip.
