Minimal immunological changes in structurally malformed rats after prenatal exposure to cyclophosphamide.

In order to compare the sensitivities of morphological and immunological parameters in a teratology study, effects in day 20 rat fetuses were studied after a single exposure to the immunosuppressive cytostatic agent cyclophosphamide (CP) on either day 11 or day 15 of gestation. Teratological methods included evaluation of external and skeletal morphology. Furthermore histology, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry were performed on fetal thymus, liver and spleen. Immune function was assayed using the Trichinella spiralis infection model. Treatment resulted in dose-dependent gross morphologi

DiGeorge's or the III-IV pharyngeal pouch syndrome: pathology and a theory of pathogenesis.

Six new cases of the III-IV pharyngeal pouch syndrome were encountered at autopsy among 897 consecutive pediatric autoposies. All occurred in patients with conotruncal cardiac anomalies. The anatomic characteristics of the heart defect suggest a possible mechanism for the pathogenesis of this developmental anomaly. It is postulated that premature involution of the thyroidea ima artery, which is the principal embryonic blood source to the 3rd and 4th pharyngeal pouches and the ultimobranchial body, may be the critical event in the embryogenesis of the syndrome. Hemodynamic alterations in the co

Pharmacovigilance analysis of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors: A FAERS-based signal detection study.

This study compares the safety signals of 3 glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPIs) - tirofiban, abciximab, and eptifibatide - using the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System, aiming to guide clinical application. We extracted reports listing the 3 GPIs as the primary suspect from the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System database. Adverse events were systematically coded using preferred terms and subsequently mapped to system organ classes. To identify potential safety signals, we employed disproportionality analysis algorithms, including the

A case of a transient phrenic nerve paralysis after resection of a giant lymphangioma evaluated by dynamic digital radiography.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioma is a relatively rare benign congenital malformation composed of dilated cystic lymphatic vessels; however, its occurrence in adults and manifestation as mediastinal lymphangioma are even rarer. In general, the incidence of mediastinal lymphangiomas has been reported to range from 0.01 to 4.5% of all mediastinal tumors. Mediastinal lymphangiomas tend to increase in size and can sometimes stretch the phrenic nerve that are present in the mediastinum, resulting in phrenic nerve palsy. Dynamic digital radiography (DDR) allows for quantitative evaluation over time and has r

Antenatal diagnosis of cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome: Prenatal characteristics and contribution of fetal facial dysmorphic signs in utero. About a case and review of literature.

Antenatal diagnosis of cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome: prenatal characteristics and contribution of fetal facial dysmorphic signs in utero. This paper is a case study and review of literature. "RASopathies" is the term coined for a group of genetic diseases that share modulation inside the MAPKinase pathway. Mutations inside the coding sequence of any of these genes may be responsible for the upregulation of the RAS pathway, leading on the clinical level to Type 1 Neurofibromatosis (NF1), Noonan syndrome (NS), Costello syndrome (CS), Multiple Lentigines, Loose Anagen Hair syndrome, Cardio-Fac

Intra-articular venous malformations of the knee.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular venous malformations (IAVM) of the knee represent a rare group of low-flow vascular malformations, mainly reported in the literature as synovial hemangiomas, usually with an onset in early childhood. The main symptoms and signs are knee pain, swelling, and hemarthrosis. These lesions are slowly progressive and can lead to chronic synovitis and joint damage. Confusing nomenclature and classification of these lesions have often led to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. We report our experience in the treatment of 14 consecutive patients affected by knee IAVM.

Evaluation of an improved algorithm for producing realistic 3D breast software phantoms: application for mammography.

PURPOSE: This work presents an improved algorithm for the generation of 3D breast software phantoms and its evaluation for mammography. METHODS: The improved methodology has evolved from a previously presented 3D noncompressed breast modeling method used for the creation of breast models of different size, shape, and composition. The breast phantom is composed of breast surface, duct system and terminal ductal lobular units, Cooper's ligaments, lymphatic and blood vessel systems, pectoral muscle, skin, 3D mammographic background texture, and breast abnormalities. The key improvement is the de

Outcomes After Lymphatic Embolization for Protein-Losing Enteropathy in Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is traditionally managed with symptom-focused therapies, with few targeted medical therapies and limited intervention options. Although abnormal hepatic and extrahepatic lymphatic connections are increasingly implicated in PLE, prior embolization reports have largely focused on intrahepatic targets, with variable outcomes and limited long-term follow-up. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of isolated intrahepatic (IH) vs combined intrahepatic and peridu

Amazonian toxoplasmosis complicated by severe hypoxemic pneumonia and myopericarditis in an immunocompetent adult.

BACKGROUND: Amazonian toxoplasmosis (AT) is a severe form of acute toxoplasmosis occurring in the Guiana Shield and characterized by a high frequency of multivisceral involvement, even in immunocompetent individuals. Pulmonary, ocular, hepatic, and lymphatic manifestations are well documented, but cardiac involvement remains exceptionally rare and likely underdiagnosed. The diagnosis is challenging because the early symptoms are nonspecific and cardiac abnormalities may be clinically silent. We present a case of severe AT with documented myopericarditis in a previously healthy young adult (one

3D-Printed Cutting Guide in Oncological Pelvic Surgery: A Case Report and Proof of Concept Validation of Cutting Guide Accuracy.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis is a lymphatic anomaly that, when symptomatic, presents in children at a median age of 6.5 years. Symptoms may include respiratory issues, palpable masses, and hemostatic abnormalities. Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis can be life-threatening due to diffuse tissue expansion and subsequent invasion of surrounding organs and tissues. Initial detection of this rare condition can be difficult due to the varied nature of its presenting symptoms and the overall lack of familiarity of clinicians with the condition. Consequently, misdiagnoses can occur, such as p

Yellow Nail Syndrome Associated With a Dental Abscess: A Case Report.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder marked by a triad of symptoms: lymphedema, yellow discolored nails, and respiratory manifestations. It is often associated with conditions such as chronic cough, bronchiectasis, pleural effusion, and chronic rhinosinusitis. Although its precise etiology remains elusive, it is believed that impaired lymphatic drainage plays a central role in its pathogenesis. YNS predominantly affects individuals over the age of 50, and there is no definitive treatment, though some cases may achieve partial or spontaneous remission. In this report, we present the ca

Cystic lymphangiomatous lesions of the adrenal gland: A clinicopathological study of 37 cases including previously unreported cysts with papillary endothelial proliferation.

Published data regarding lymphangiomatous cysts of the adrenal glands (also known as adrenal cystic lymphangiomas) are limited to case reports and a few small case series. We analyzed the clinicopathologic features and histomorphologic spectrum of 37 cases of adrenal cystic lymphangiomatous lesions. There were 26 females and 11 males ranging from 12 to 67 years old (median, 34 years). Twenty two lesions (59.5%) were diagnosed incidentally on imaging studies for unrelated causes, while 15 cases (40.5%) were symptomatic: 8 patients presented with abdominal or flank pain and 7 patients presented

Case report of primary intestinal lymphangiectasia diagnosed in an octogenarian by ileal intubation and by push enteroscopy after missed diagnosis by standard colonoscopy and EGD.

RATIONALE: Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL) is a rare, presumably congenital lesion that is usually diagnosed in patients < 3 years old, is rarely first diagnosed in adulthood, and when first diagnosed in adulthood typically presents with symptoms for many years. Although PIL is often identified by endoscopic abnormalities, it must be emphasized that the jejunoileum/distal duodenum must be intubated for diagnosis because the lesions are present in these regions. This work demonstrates that 1)-PIL can occur in an octogenarian; 2)-shows that the characteristic endoscopic findings are no
