Methadone is commonly used in the treatment of heroin addiction. Patients with a history of opioid misuse or on methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) with cancer often have difficult to manage pain. Disseminated adenoviral infection with hepatitis is rare in children undergoing standard chemotherapy. We report on a 3(1/2)-year-old male with fatal adenovirus hepatitis receiving maintenance chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In last month's issue, we discussed drug treatment for acute mood episodes (mania, hypomania, depression or mixed states) in patients with bipolar disorder. We pointed out that prescribers have to keep in mind that patients will often need treatment long term. Here we consider the role of drug therapy for maintenance and prevention in patients with bipolar disorder.
