Aztreonam for treating meningitis caused by gram-negative rods.

10 patients with meningitis due to unusual gram-negative organisms (Pseudomonas, Proteus, Salmonella and Klebsiella) were effectively treated with aztreonam. A detailed history and a thorough physical examination combined with careful laboratory testing resulted in accurate diagnosis and cure of all patients.

The antibiotic sensitivity of bacteria isolated from the blood of patients in St Thomas' Hospital, 1969-1988.

We have monitored the antibiotic sensitivity of bloodstream isolates of common bacteria over a period of 20 years. Among the Gram-positive bacteria, the proportion of isolates of Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin, erythromycin, fusidate, or gentamicin has increased marginally, while that of coagulase-negative staphylococci (mostly Staph. epidermidis) has increased markedly. Enterococci are becoming serially more resistant to high concentrations of aminoglycosides. The Enterobacteriaceae have become considerably less sensitive to ampicillin (and amoxycillin) and trimethoprim but mo

The prophylactic use of Keflex and Keflin in vaginal hysterectomy.

Although the number of severe infections occurring after vaginal hysterectomy are few, they sometimes result in the death of a patient or a protracted hospital course. A prospective double-blind study, using Keflex and Keflin in theraputic doses, was undertaken to elucidate more clearly the effect upon morbidity in vaginal hysterectomy. Cultures were taken form a catheterized urine specimen and the cervix of all patients before surgery. Cultures were repeated on the fourth postoperative day. Morbidity was defined as an oral temperature of 100.6 degrees F. on two separate occasions, 4hours apart

Impact of Apical Shaping Diameter on Bacterial Load Reduction in Multispecies Infected Root Canals.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of larger apical shaping and the efficacy of different disinfection protocols on increasing the bacterial reduction. METHODS: Enterococcus faecalis (E.F.) was cultivated on plate count agar (PCA) and then transferred to test tubes containing brain heart infusion (BHI) broth. Then, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.A.), Candida albicans (C.A.), and Proteus mirabilis (P.M.), were introduced one after the other in a specific timeline. After that, 70 lower incisors were infected by this bacterial suspension. Afterwards, these teeth were randomly divided into seven groups for d…

As the Wagner grade increased, there was a shift in pathogens from G+ to G- bacteria, along with a rise in polymicrobial infections, primarily coinfections involving G+ and G- bacteria. The G+ bacteria exhibited high resistance to penicillin and ce …

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Clinically Relevant Enterobacteriaceae Isolates: A Retrospective Study at a Southern Italian Hospital.

BACKGROUND: The Enterobacteriaceae family is the most heterogeneous group of Gram-negative bacilli, with both environmental and clinical relevance. Although many of these species are part of the normal intestinal microbiota, species such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis are among the most common opportunistic pathogens, frequently responsible for nosocomial infections, including urinary tract infections, bacteraemia, and pneumonia. Based on these concerns, these species are increasingly being studied for their ability to develop antimicrobial resistance, often …

Small molecule produced by Photorhabdus interferes with ubiquinone biosynthesis in Gram-negative bacteria.

UNLABELLED: We report the identification of 3,6-dihydroxy-1,2-benzisoxazole (DHB) in a screen of Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus, whose symbiotic relationship with eukaryotic nematodes favors secondary metabolites that meet several requirements matching those for clinically useful antibiotics. DHB is produced by Photorhabdus laumondii and is selective against the Gram-negative species Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Acinetobacter baumannii. It is inactive against anaerobic gut bacteria and nontoxic to human cells. Mutants …
