Is there a really resistance to scabies treatment with permethrin? In vitro killing activity of permethrin on Sarcoptes scabiei from patients with resistant scabies.

Recently, there have been increased scabies infestations but many patients do not respond to treatment. Clinicians are hesitant to use permethrin despite the fact that treatment failure may be due to noncompliance with the treatment rather than permethrin resistance. We aimed to investigate the permethrin resistance of mites collected from patients who have endured scabies for at least 3 months despite permethrin treatment. Parasites in patients who had scabies for at least 3 months despite permethrin treatment were collected. Only parasites that were not damaged during sampling, not fragmente

Predictors of Trypanosoma lewisi in Rattus norvegicus from Durban, South Africa.

This study investigated associations between Trypanosoma lewisi and Xenopsylla cheopis, a common cyclical vector of T. lewisi; Polyplax spinulosa, a reported mechanical vector; and Laelaps echidnina and Laelaps lamborni, 2 rodent mites of Rattus norvegicus in Durban, South Africa. In total, 379 R. norvegicus individuals were live-trapped at 48 sites in 4 locality types around Durban during a 1-yr period. Rats were euthanized, cardiac blood was taken to check for hemoparasites, and ectoparasites were removed for identification. Parasite species richness was higher in pups (2.11) and juveniles (

Characterization of Sarcoptes scabiei Tropomyosin and Paramyosin: Immunoreactive Allergens in Scabies.

Scabies is a human skin disease due to the burrowing ectoparasite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis resulting in intense itching and inflammation and manifesting as a skin allergy. Because of insufficient mite material and lack of in vitro propagation system for antigen preparation, scabies is a challenging disease to develop serological diagnostics. For allergen characterization, full-length S. scabiei tropomyosin (Sar s 10) was cloned, expressed in pET-15b, and assessed for reactivity with IgE antibodies from human sera. IgE binding was observed to Sar s 10 with sera collected from subjects wit

Single versus multiple enemies and the impact on biological control of spider mites in cassava fields in West-Africa.

To determine whether to use single or multiple predator species for biological pest control requires manipulative field experiments. We performed such tests in Benin (West Africa) in cassava fields infested by the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa, and the cotton red mite Oligonychus gossypii. These fields also harboured the cassava apex-inhabiting predator Typhlodromalus aripo and either the leaf-inhabiting predator Amblydromalus manihoti or Euseius fustis. We manipulated predator species composition on individual plants to determine their effect on prey and predator densities. In fiel

Sarcoptic mange and cheetah conservation in Masai Mara (Kenya): epidemiological study in a wildlife/livestock system.

The sanitary control of threatened wild animals is of pivotal interest for their conservation. This task, however, is highly complex in wildlife/livestock systems. In this paper we report findings from a 2-year cross-sectional study of the epidemiology and attempted control of a Sarcoptes mite infestation in the threatened cheetah population in Masai Mara (Kenya), and discuss its interaction with sympatric wild (lion, wildebeest and Thomson's gazelle) and domestic (dog, cattle and sheep) animals. Sarcoptes scabiei was isolated from cheetahs, Thomson's gazelles, wildebeests, lions, cattle, goat

Biological Control of Date Palm Mite Oligonychus afrasiaticus (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) Using the Predatory Mite Euseius scutalis (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) Under Laboratory and Field Conditions.

The date palm mite Oligonychus afrasiaticus is one of the most destructive phytophagous pests in date palm orchards and can cause severe economic losses when not effectively managed. Although chemical acaricides remain the primary control method, their adverse effects on natural enemies, environmental quality, and human health underscore the need to reduce reliance on chemical inputs and develop sustainable biological control strategies, including the use of acarine predators. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the predatory mite Euseius scutalis as a biocontrol agent ag

Microbe-Host Interaction in Rosacea and Its Modulation through Topical Ivermectin.

Rosacea is characterized by inflammatory lesions, often accompanied by an increased density of the common skin mite Demodex folliculorum. Although rosacea shows a high prevalence and significantly affects the QOL of patients, the underlying mechanisms, especially the role of cutaneous dysbiosis, are largely unknown. Hence, we aimed to systematically characterize disease severity of patients with rosacea in the context of mite density, the cutaneous microbiome, and the host's transcriptome before and after 30 days of topical 1% ivermectin cream treatment. At day 30, a marked decrease in mite de

Evaluation of the relationship between Demodex infestation and obesity in rosacea patients.

BACKGROUND: The changes in the skin caused by obesity may predispose patients with rosacea to Demodex infestation (DI). Besides, identifying predisposing factors in these patients is important for initial treatment plan. AIMS: The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between DI and obesity in patients with rosacea. METHODS: Sociodemographic characteristics, body mass index, and clinical features of 130 rosacea patients were recorded. Demodex density was measured by noninvasive standard skin biopsy, and a determination of ≥5/cm2 mites was regarded as positive for DI. Pa

Real-life experience on effectiveness and tolerability of topical ivermectin in papulopustular rosacea and antiparasitic effect on Demodex mites.

Ivermectin is a drug approved for the treatment of papulopustular rosacea (PPR). Although clinical guidelines recommend the use of ivermectin as the first-line treatment in patients with almost clear and mild rosacea, studies concerning its use on them are lacking. This study investigated the effectiveness and the tolerability of ivermectin in almost clear to severe rosacea and assessed the antiparasitic effect on Demodex mites. This is a retrospective study based on 50 patients affected by PPR and treated with topical ivermectin 1% once daily over 16 weeks. The disease severity, the patient-e

Pretreatment Demodex infestation predicts dupilumab-associated blepharoconjunctivitis in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab has revolutionized treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). However, its use has been associated with ophthalmologic adverse events referred to as dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD), reported in up to 30% of patients. Although several risk factors have been proposed, the role of Demodex folliculorum remains poorly defined. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between eyelid Demodex infestation and DAOSD development during the first 16 weeks of dupilumab therapy. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 30 adults with moderate-to-severe

Demonstration of circulating antibodies to Pneumonyssoides caninum in experimentally and naturally infected dogs.

Antibodies to the canine nasal mite, Pneumonyssoides caninum, were demonstrated by ELISA in sera from four experimentally and 77 naturally infected dogs employing a crude P. caninum antigen. In sera from the four experimentally infected dogs, antibodies to P. caninum were first detected on day 11 post-inoculation (p.i.). Optical density (OD) values remained high throughout the observation period of 14 weeks. Two major protein bands with apparent molecular weights of 83 and 74kDa were visible by western blot (WB) from day 11 p.i. On day 14 p.i., another three major protein bands at 44, 37, and

An apparent, locally acquired case of rickettsialpox (Rickettsia akari) in Ontario, Canada.

Rickettsialpox, caused by Rickettsia akari, is a spotted fever group rickettsiae transmitted to humans through the bite of the house mouse mite (Liponyssoides sanguineus). Worldwide, rickettsialpox is most commonly associated with exposure to rodents in urban environments. Here, we present the case of a 47-year-old woman from Brantford, Ontario, with fever, eschar on the right leg, expanding erythema, and right groin lymphadenopathy. Early in infection, R. akari serology was negative (IgG <1:64), but convalescent titre increased to 1:1,024. The patient did not travel outside of Ontario in the

Management of scabies.

Scabies is a common contagious parasitic dermatosis. Transmission of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis generally occurs by skin-to-skin contact, but with crusted scabies it may also occur through fomites, such as infected clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is usually clinical. A 2010 updated Cochrane review concluded that management of scabies is based on topical scabicides, mainly 5% permethrin. However, oral ivermectin, although not licensed in many countries, may be useful, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or comply with topical therapy and in institutional scabies epidemics.
