The effects of self-report rating scales on the assessment of motion sickness.

The assessment of motion sickness typically relies on self-reports. It is unclear whether rating general sickness (e.g., Fast Motion Sickness scale; FMS) or specific symptoms (e.g., Motion Illness Symptoms Classification; MISC) impacts the assessment. Different from prior studies, we investigated how FMS and MISC ratings developed during the same motion exposure. Both scales showed comparable time courses with a similar direction of rating transitions. To investigate the development of nausea versus non-nausea symptoms, participants also rated the MISC2D - a two-dimensional MISC-derivative sep…

Overcoming the limitations of motion sensor models by considering dendritic computations.

The estimation of motion is an essential process for any sighted animal. Computational models of motion sensors have a long and successful history but they still suffer from basic shortcomings, as they disagree with physiological evidence and each model is dedicated to a specific type of motion, which is controversial from a biological standpoint. In this work, we propose a new approach to modeling motion sensors that considers dendritic computations, a key aspect for predicting single-neuron responses that had previously been absent from motion models. We show how, by taking into account the …

The effects of spatial relations and motion information in social scene perception.

A body of research shows that the human visual system hosts a network specialized in processing social interactions-i.e., physical/communicative exchanges between people. This network largely overlaps with regions involved in motion perception. Current views propose that, since motion is an intrinsic component of social interaction, it is necessary to trigger social-interaction selectivity. However, the relationship between social-interaction perception and motion perception remains unclear. We took advantage of two existing functional MRI datasets collected in the same participants, to identi…

A motion capture protocol for the kinematic analysis of transfemoral and transtibial sprinters.

Optimizing performance and safety in sprinters with lower-limb amputation requires standardized methods. This study presents a novel marker-based motion capture protocol to define local coordinate systems and Cardan sequences for in-vivo analysis of running biomechanics in athletes with transfemoral (TF) and transtibial (TT) amputation. The protocol provides detailed definitions and shares computational codes, supporting prosthetists and coaches in optimizing prosthetic setups. Moreover, integrating in-vivo biomechanics data into in-vitro and in silico experiments could lead to safer, more eff…

Generation of Motional Squeezed States for Neutral Atoms in Optical Tweezers.

Optical tweezers are a powerful tool for the precise positioning of a variety of small objects, including single neutral atoms. Once trapped, atoms can be cooled to the motional ground state of the tweezers. For a more advanced control of their spatial wave function, we report here a simple method to squeeze their motion, and the protocol to measure the squeezing factor based on momentum spreading estimation. We explore the limitations set by the technical imperfections of the tweezers, as well as the more fundamental limit set by their anharmonicity, and finally demonstrate a squeezing of 5.4…

Corticosteroid Injections for Pain Relief and Range of Motion in Adhesive Capsulitis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) is a chronic, painful shoulder condition characterized by progressive stiffness and restricted range of motion. Despite its prevalence, there is limited evidence, particularly in our regional population, regarding the optimal timing, dosage, and technique of corticosteroid injection to achieve maximal pain relief and functional recovery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of intra-articular corticosteroid injections in patients with adhesive capsulitis, as measured by pain reduction and improvement in range…

Emergence of inertia in the low-Reynolds regime of self-diffusiophoretic motion.

For isotropic swimming particles driven by self-diffusiophoresis at zero Reynolds number (where particle velocity responds instantaneously to applied force), the diffusive timescale of emitted solute can produce an emergent quasi-inertial behavior. These particles can orbit in a central potential and reorient under second-order dynamics, not the first-order dynamics of classical zero-Reynolds motion. They are described by a simple effective model that embeds their history-dependent behavior as an effective inertia, this being the most primitive expression of memory. The system can be parameter…

Trembling Motion of Exciton Polaritons Close to the Rashba-Dresselhaus Regime.

We report the experimental observation of trembling quantum motion, or Zitterbewegung, of exciton polaritons in a perovskite microcavity at room temperature. By introducing liquid-crystal molecules into the microcavity, we achieve spinor states with synthetic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and tunable energy splitting. Under a resonant excitation, the polariton fluid exhibits clear trembling motion perpendicular to its flowing direction, accompanied by a unique spin pattern resembling interlocked fingers. Furthermore, leveraging the sizable tunability of energy gaps by external electri…

Antiviral drug recognition and elevator-type transport motions of CNT3.

Nucleoside analogs have broad clinical utility as antiviral drugs. Key to their systemic distribution and cellular entry are human nucleoside transporters. Here, we establish that the human concentrative nucleoside transporter 3 (CNT3) interacts with antiviral drugs used in the treatment of coronavirus infections. We report high-resolution single-particle cryo-electron microscopy structures of bovine CNT3 complexed with antiviral nucleosides N4-hydroxycytidine, PSI-6206, GS-441524 and ribavirin, all in inward-facing states. Notably, we found that the orally bioavailable antiviral molnupiravir

A comparison of the psychological effects of robot motion in physical and virtual environments.

A mixed-methods approach was used to assess the fidelity of virtual environments as ergonomic assessment tools for human-robot interaction. Participants performed a visual search task in the physical environment while a nearby collaborative robot repeatedly extended its arm toward them. This scenario was reconstructed in two virtual environments with different levels of graphical detail. Measures of presence, task performance, workload, and anxiety were taken to determine the effect of robot motion in all three environments. Task performance decreased in response to robot motion in the physica…

Back motion in unridden horses in walk, trot and canter on a circle.

Equine back function is of concern to riders, as well as to veterinarians and physiotherapists; these groups may benefit from knowledge about spinal motion on the circle. This descriptive and comparative study aimed to quantify equine neck, back and pelvic motion in walk, trot and canter on a 9 m circle. Sixteen healthy horses in training, of varying breed and conformation, were measured using optical motion capture (150 Hz), with optical markers on the poll, withers, T15, tubera coxae and lumbosacral joint. Cervicothoracic and thoracolumbar flexion-extension and lateral bending, and pelvic ro…

Abdominal compression as motion management for stereotactic radiotherapy of ventricular tachycardia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has emerged as a promising treatment for patients with ventricular tachycardia (VT) who do not respond to standard treatments. However, the management of respiratory motion during treatment remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the effect of abdominal compression (AC) on respiratory induced motion in the heart. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A patient cohort of 18 lung cancer patients was utilized, where two four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scans were performed for each patient, one with and one without AC. The pa…

Investigation of vibration's effect on driver in optimal motion cueing algorithm.

The increased sensation error between the surroundings and the driver is a major problem in driving simulators, resulting in unrealistic motion cues. Intelligent control schemes have to be developed to provide realistic motion cues to the driver. The driver's body model incorporates the effects of vibrations on the driver's health, comfort, perception, and motion sickness, and most of the current research on motion cueing has not considered these factors. This article proposes a novel optimal motion cueing algorithm that utilizes the driver's body model in conjunction with the driver's percept…

Preliminary Evaluation of an Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment to Prevent Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness affecting military pilots and aircrew can impact flight safety and, if severe, can lead to disqualification from flight status. However, due to the common adverse effects of motion sickness pharmaceuticals (e.g., drowsiness), medication options are severely limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential utility of a nonpharmaceutical method for motion sickness prevention, specifically an osteopathic manipulative technique (OMT).METHODS:A novel OMT protocol for the reduction of motion sickness symptoms and severity was evaluated using a sham-contro…

Fifth metatarsal strain distribution during cutting motions in soccer.

The objective of this study was to determine the fifth metatarsal strain generation mechanism during cutting motions performed while playing soccer using a finite element foot model. Five collegiate soccer players performed the side-step cutting and the cross-step cutting motions to measure the three-dimensional foot kinematics, ground reaction force, and plantar pressure distribution. In addition, a finite-element model of a foot consisting of bony structures, ligaments, and skin was constructed from computed tomography images. Simulations were conducted to perform the cutting motions, using …

Internal models of self-motion: neural computations by the vestibular cerebellum.

The vestibular cerebellum plays an essential role in maintaining our balance and ensuring perceptual stability during activities of daily li … pect to gravity. To account for changes in the external environment and/or biomechanics during self-motion, the neural mechanisms underlying these computations are continually updated to ensure accurate motor behavior. To date, studies on the vestibular cerebellum have predominately focused on passive vestibular stimulation, whereas in actuality most sti …

Tapping on a target: dealing with uncertainty about its position and motion.

Reaching movements are guided by estimates of the target object's location. Since the precision of instantaneous estimates is limited, one might accumulate visual information over time. However, if the object is not stationary, accumulating information can bias the estimate. How do people deal with this trade-off between improving precision and reducing the bias? To find out, we asked participants to tap on targets. The targets were stationary or moving, with jitter added to their positions. By analysing the response to the jitter, we show that people continuously use the latest available info

Motion characteristics of subclinical tremors in Parkinson's disease and normal subjects.

The characteristics of the Parkinson's disease tremor reported previously are not applicable to the full spectrum of severity. The characteristics of high- and low-amplitude tremors differ in signal regularity and frequency dispersion, a phenomenon that indicates characterisation should be studied separately based on the severity. The subclinical tremor of Parkinson's disease is close to physiological tremor in terms of amplitude and frequency, and their distinctive features are still undetermined. We aimed to determine joint motion characteristics that are unique to subclinical Parkinson's di…
