Anatomical studies were conducted to characterize the source, type, and distribution of parathyroid gland innervation in European starlings. Denervation experiments demonstrated that the parathyroid glands and adjacent carotid bodies are innervated by nerve fibers originating in the nodose ganglion of the vagus nerve. In the parathyroid parenchyma, these fibers terminate adjacent to chief cells or near vascular smooth muscle. Vagal fibers also form synapses with catecholamine-containing glomus cells of the carotid body. Blood parenchyma. These observations suggest that vagal innervation may in

Muscle weakness after immobilization often exceeds that explained by loss of muscle mass alone, suggesting a role for neuromuscular synaptic changes. To quantify these adaptations, we developed a composite transcriptomic Neuromuscular Junction (NMJ) Remodeling Score and evaluated its behavior relative to classical atrophy pathways during short-term unloading. We analyzed vastus lateralis RNA sequencing data from adults undergoing 10 days of unilateral lower-limb suspension followed by a 21-day recovery, generating NMJ and atrophy scores for 15 and 10 genes, respectively. Transcriptome-wide tes

Forefoot pes cavus is a cardinal sign of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). This review is focused on the pathophysiology of pes cavus in CMT1A duplication, which is the most common subtype of the disease. Assessment of foot deformities in CMT1A, their prevalence and proposed mechanisms, and recent contributions of magnetic resonance imaging studies of lower-leg and foot musculature are revised. Special attention is given to papers on foot deformities at initial stages of the disease. We conclude that pes cavus is an early and age-dependent manifestation of CMT1A duplication. Selective denerva

The presence of apoptotic fibers and the embryonic proteins desmin and vimentin were investigated in muscle biopsy specimens from patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Apoptosis was studied in 24 cases of SMA by means of in situ end labeling of nuclear DNA fragmentation using TUNEL staining and immunohistochemistry. Apoptotic nuclei were observed in 54.1% of the cases, and desmin and vimentin positive fibers were found in the majority of cases. A significant negative correlation was observed between the number of apoptotic nuclei and the duration of the disease, as well as between the n

Although a tremendous volume of energy and literature has been devoted to laryngeal paralysis in the past decade, there are still substantial gaps in our understanding of fundamental issues. Oddly enough, controversy remains regarding the actual innervation pathways of the larynx and whether the paralyzed larynx is truly denervated or dysfunctionally reinnervated. An appreciation of these basic issues is prerequisite to making prudent decisions regarding the most appropriate type of intervention. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of basic laryngeal anatomy and neurophy

To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of bilateral autoamputation of the first sacral nerve roots in a patient who has spondyloptosis. The authors think that autoamputation occurred in adolescence during a period of rapid forward displacement of the fifth lumbar vertebra on the sacrum. It is postulated that the lack of motor weakness is due to the long-standing nature of the denervation and that other adjacent nerve roots supplying the triceps surae have, over time, increased the power of those muscle fibers not supplied by the first sacral roots. This finding would encourage devel

Mitochondrial degeneration and dysfunctions are increasingly linked with neurodegenerative diseases, with the greatest risk factor being increased age. Mitochondrial dysfunction is also implicated in sarcopenia, the age-associated weakness and atrophy of striated muscle. Untangling the pathophysiological effects of age-related mitochondrial degeneration and dysfunction is of huge interest in gerontology. In elderly humans and Fischer 344 (F344) rats, motor neuron (MN) death and denervation effects are becoming increasingly implicated in sarcopenia. We have previously demonstrated that MN loss

Hypomorphic Glucose 6-P dehydrogenase (G6PD) alleles, which cause G6PD deficiency, affect around one in twenty people worldwide. The high incidence of G6PD deficiency may reflect an evolutionary adaptation to the widespread prevalence of malaria, as G6PD-deficient red blood cells (RBCs) are hostile to the malaria parasites that infect humans. Although medical interest in this enzyme deficiency has been mainly focused on RBCs, more recent evidence suggests that there are broader implications for G6PD deficiency in health, including in skeletal muscle diseases. G6PD catalyzes the rate-limiting s

Congenital myopathies (CMs) are a group of diseases that primarily affect the muscle fiber, especially the contractile apparatus and the different components that condition its normal functioning. They present as muscle weakness and hypotonia at birth or during the first year of life. Centronuclear CM is characterized by a high incidence of nuclei located centrally and internally in muscle fibers. Clinical case: a 22-year-old male patient with symptoms of muscle weakness since early childhood, with difficulty in performing physical activity according to his age, with the presence of a long fac

Alcohol-induced liver fibrosis is a devastating manifestation of alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). However, conventional mouse models fail to recapitulate this fibrotic phenotype, limiting their translational relevance. Mice develop and retain robust brown adipose tissue (BAT) for thermoregulation, which confers protection against hepatic steatosis. Here, we identify BAT as a key protective tissue against alcohol-induced liver fibrosis in mice. BAT was inactivated in mice via denervation or surgically ablated, followed by 8 wk of chronic plus binge alcohol exposure. Both BAT denervation and

The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is the workhorse in microvascular breast reconstruction. Rectus muscle sacrifice or denervation and inappropriate rectus sheath closure are the main causes of abdominal wall morbidity. Robotic vessel dissection may limit fascial incision length below the arcuate line and rectus denervation. This study describes and focuses on the implementation and feasibility of this technique in daily surgical practice. A retrospective data collection of all robotic DIEP flap reconstructions between August 2020 and October 2021 was conducted at our universi

Voluntary elbow extension is essential for optimal upper limb positioning required for daily living activities, particularly above-shoulder maneuvers. The authors present a case of traumatic brachial plexus injury in which paralysis of the musculature selectively supplied by the posterior cord was based on magnetic resonance imaging and nerve conduction studies. An attempt at a radial nerve graft at another center was not effective. Ipsilateral hand function improved after multiple local tendon transfers were performed. Restoration of active elbow extension was not possible using the posterior

A 12-year-old girl presented with a 1-week history of right hip pain. MRI revealed a lesion in the incompletely fused posterior triradiate cartilage of the right acetabulum with imaging characteristics of an osteoid osteoma. The surgeon requested guidewire placement under CT guidance for lesion drilling. The CT approach was planned to avoid the usual course of the sciatic nerve, and the lesion was successfully removed and confirmed at histology to be an osteoid osteoma. At a follow-up visit, MRI showed no recurrence but demonstrated an abnormal common peroneal nerve from the sciatic notch to t

Selective neuronal loss is the hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases. In patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), most motor neur … nction using gene ablation, viral gene therapy, or pharmacological inhibition significantly delayed muscle denervation. In the presence of mutant SOD1, MMP-9 expressed by fast motor neurons themselves enhances activation of ER stress and is sufficient to trigger axonal die-back. These findings define MMP-9 as a candidate therapeutic target for ALS. The molecular bas …

INTRODUCTION: Lesions of peripheral nerves cause loss of motor and sensory function and also lead to hyperreflexia and hyperalgesia. Activity-dependent therapies promote axonal regeneration and functional recovery and may improve sensory-motor coordination and restoration of adequate circuitry at the spinal level.
METHODS: We compared the effects of passive (bicycle) and active (treadmill) exercise on nerve regeneration and modulation of the spinal H reflex after transection and repair of the rat sciatic nerve. Animals were evaluated during 2 months using electrophysiological, functional, and

A three-month-old dobermann was presented with hyperfiexion of the right carpus. The abnormality had evolved over a three-week period, following circumferential soft tissue trauma to the distal brachium. The carpal joint angle measured at the limit of passive extension was 105 degrees compared with 175 degrees for the left carpus, and prevented placement of metacarpal and digital pads on the ground. Neurological examination revealed marked atrophy of the carpal extensors, an absent extensor carpi radialis reflex and moderate atrophy of the carpal flexors. Spontaneous electromyographic activity

Electrodiagnostic tests may be valuable in the assessment of patients with anorectal dysfunction and are complementary to imaging and manometry. While the latter delineate morphological and functional sphincter changes, respectively, electrodiagnostic methods document, help to localize and assess the severity and mechanism of neural injury. These data are important for the treatment of patients and for estimating their prognoses. Among electrodiagnostic tests, concentric needle electromyography of the external anal sphincter is the most important. It demonstrates muscle denervation, quantitati…
