BACKGROUND: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) incidence in patients with vitiligo has not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the incidence of NMSC in patients with vitiligo.
METHODS: A cohort of 477 patients with vitiligo and no history of NMSC seen in an outpatient academic center between January 2001 and December 2006 was established. All charts for patients with vitiligo were reviewed for incident NMSC, and histopathology verified. Age-adjusted (2000 US Standard Million) incidence rates were calculated and compared to US rates.
RESULTS: Six patients with NMSC were identified; al

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Skin cancer incidence is higher than that of any other human malignancy, and yet one of its root causes [ultraviolet (UV) radiation] is perhaps better understood than any other human carcinogen. The roles of UV radiation exposure and indoor tanning behaviors on skin cancer risk are explored here.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies from the past several years have shown a significant association between ever-use of an indoor tanning facility and an increased risk of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The association between indoor tanning and skin cancer is p

BACKGROUND: The endogenous antioxidant system of the skin scavenges reactive oxygen species and combats ultraviolet induced oxidative skin damage. Supporting this cutaneous defense system with topical or oral antioxidants may provide a successful strategy for the treatment and prevention of skin cancer.
OBJECTIVE: Review evidence regarding treatment and prevention of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers through dietary and topical antioxidants, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
METHODS: Literature review.
RESULTS: Review of the literature demonstrates that the administration of synthetic r

Cutaneous epidermoid cysts are very common lesions, but neoplastic transformation of their epithelium is extremely rare. We describe a patient with basal cell carcinoma arising in the wall of an epidermoid cyst present on the back for 20 years. We emphasize the advisability of a close histologic examination of all cutaneous cysts that are seemingly benign in order to avoid incorrect diagnosis.

Worldwide, incidence rates of skin cancer are increasing alarmingly in populations of predominantly Caucasian origin. A prospective population-based survey, set up to collect epidemiological information on all excised and histologically confirmed skin cancers, started in Townsville, Australia (population of 127,000) in December 1996. Data on the anatomical distribution of skin cancer has been collected using a detailed body map. Estimations of type-specific and site-specific incidence rates were age-standardized according to world standard population. Site-specific incidence rates were adjuste

A case of xeroderma pigmentosum group D in 36-year-old woman (XP85TO) is reported. The patient had severe photosensitivity from age 4, and developed multiple basal cell epitheliomas and solar keratoses but exhibited no apparent neurological defects. A skin phototest by monochromatic ultraviolet light revealed a delayed peak of erythema 48 h after irradiation and lowered minimal erythemal doses. Unscheduled DNA synthesis induced in XP85TO cells was 36.0% in dermal fibroblasts and 32.6% in epidermal keratinocytes compared with normal cells. The XP85TO cells were sensitive to ultraviolet killing

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Calmodulin-like protein CALML3 is an epithelial-specific protein regulated during keratinocyte differentiation in vitro. CALML3 expression is downregulated in breast cancers and transformed cell lines making it an attractive marker for tumor formation. The objective of this study was to survey CALML3 localization in normal epidermis and in hyperproliferative skin diseases including actinic keratosis, squamous and basal cell carcinoma as well as verruca and psoriasis and to compare CALML3 immunoreactivity with the proliferation marker Ki-67.
METHODS: Paraffin-embedded

Overexpression of c-erbB-2/neu/HER-2 oncoprotein, a receptor tyrosine kinase, has been demonstrated in a variety of human cancers. To elucidate the involvement of c-erbB-2 in human skin carcinogenesis, we examined expression of the protein in skin samples from five cases of keratoacanthoma (KA), 10 of actinic keratosis (AK), 24 of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 10 of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and five samples of normal epidermis, using an immunohistochemical method on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Expression of c-erbB-2 was also examined in cultured SCC cell lines, a premalig

Granuloma faciale (GF) is a rare, benign, chronic dermatosis that typically presents as reddish-brown to violaceous plaques on the face. Here, we report the first documented case of GF arising in association with both squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A 79-year-old man with a history of several non-melanoma skin cancers presented with new lesions on the right cheek and ear. Biopsies confirmed GF on the cheek and SCC on the ear, with adjacent inflammatory infiltrates also consistent with GF. Additionally, subsequent Mohs micrographic surgery revealed a distinct, coex

To address whether matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 expression by mesenchymal fibroblasts may be differentially modulated by interactions with normal or malignant epidermal cells, we set up a fibroblast co-culture model separately with keratinocytes, basal cell carcinoma cells and melanoma cells. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and gelatin zymography were used to detect and quantify the expression of MMP-2 by these different kinds of cells. In independent cultures, MMP-2 was highly expressed by fibroblasts and melanoma cells constitutively, but barely express

BACKGROUND: Pig manure utilization and valorization is an important topic with tightening regulations focused on ecological and safety issues. By itself pig manure is a poor substrate for biogas production because of its excessive nitrogen content relative to available organic carbon. Such substrate is alkaline, and methanogenesis can be suppressed, and so additional substrates with high organic carbon must be added. The most promising is straw, which is available from adjacent biogas plant cultures. However, the abundant lignocellulosic biomass of wheat straw undergoes slow decomposition, and

The immunofluorescent staining patterns of three differentiation-specific monoclonals (HLK3, HLK7, HLK20) that display different immunofluorescent (IF) reactivity in normal and psoriatic epidermis, were examined in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), as well as other human normal epithelial and nonepithelial tissues. Similar staining patterns within epidermis were seen with HLK3 (intercellular) and HLK7 (perinuclear) in psoriasis, SCC, and BCC. HLK20 selectively stained BCC and SCC within epidermis and dermis, and was negative in psoriasis. The monoclonals did not rea

Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a rare non-melanoma skin cancer that shares the characteristic features of both basal and squamous cell carcinomas (BCC, SCC). Our research enables better characterization of BSC in comparison to high-risk subtypes of BCC and SCC. Paper includes a retrospective analysis of BSC cases regarding sex, age, number of tumors and anatomical distribution in comparison to BCC and SCC evaluating the differences and defining the implications. Histologically confirmed carcinomas recorded between 1999 and 2019 were studied. 181 diagnosed BSC cases were identified, making thi

Three patients underwent cranial irradiation as part of treatment for childhood malignancy. Two of these patients had acute lymphocytic leukemia and one had an astrocytoma. All had longlasting remissions from their childhood malignancy but 8-15 years later developed a basal cell carcinoma of the scalp within previous radiation portals. The basal cell carcinomas were all treated successfully using Mohs micrographic surgery. Follow-up of patients receiving irradiation for childhood malignancy should include periodic cutaneous examinations of previously irradiated sites.
