Multiple instance learning method based on convolutional neural network and self-attention for early cancer detection.

Early cancer detection using T-cell receptor sequencing (TCR-seq) and multiple instances learning methods has shown significant effectiveness. We introduce a multiple instance learning method based on convolutional neural networks and self-attention (MICA). First, MICA preprocesses TCR-seq using word vectors and then extracts features using convolutional neural networks. Second, MICA uses an enhanced self-attention mechanism to extract relational features of instances. Finally, MICA can extract the crucial TCR-seq. After cross-validation, MICA achieves an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.911 an

InFoRM: a unified inverse and forward model for sensorimotor control.

Sensorimotor control models traditionally consist of two types of internal models: inverse models, which compute the motor commands needed to reach a desired movement goal, and forward models, which predict the resulting sensory feedback. These models are usually considered separate entities, but it is unclear whether such separation exists in the nervous system. Additionally, maintaining separate networks may be more computationally expensive. Therefore, we investigated whether these functions could be executed within a single neural circuit: an inverse-forward-recognition model (InFoRM). We

Visuotactile representation of peripersonal space: a neural network study.

Neurophysiological and behavioral studies suggest that the peripersonal space is represented in a multisensory fashion by integrating stimuli of different modalities. We developed a neural network to simulate the visual-tactile representation of the peripersonal space around the right and left hands. The model is composed of two networks (one per hemisphere), each with three areas of neurons: two are unimodal (visual and tactile) and communicate by synaptic connections with a third downstream multimodal (visual-tactile) area. The hemispheres are interconnected by inhibitory synapses. We applie

Deep Learning for Cardiac Image Analysis: Unveiling Advances in Deep Learning Architectures.

Deep learning (DL) continues to advance cardiac image analysis with increasingly sophisticated methodologies. Although convolutional neural networks laid the foundation for DL, emerging methods including graph neural networks, transformers, implicit neural representations, generative adversarial networks, and foundation models enable enhanced anatomical and functional modeling, image generation, and multimodal integration. Graph neural networks enable non-Euclidean data representations that preserve anatomical structure; transformers improve sequence modeling in dynamic imaging; and implicit n

Abnormal Information Flow in Schizophrenia Is Linked to Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Prior research has shown that patients with schizophrenia (SZ) show disruption in brain network connectivity that is thought to underlie their cognitive and psychotic symptoms. However, most studies examining functional network disruption in schizophrenia have focused on the temporally correlated coupling of the strength of network connections. Here, we move beyond correlative metrics to assay causal computations of connectivity changes in directed neural information flow, assayed from a neural source to a target in SZ. STUDY DESIGN: This study describes a whole-bra

Cerebellar circuit computations for predictive motor control.

The rise of the deep neural network as the workhorse of artificial intelligence has brought increased attention to how network architectures serve specialized functions. The cerebellum, with its largely shallow, feedforward architecture, provides a curious example of such a specialized network. Within the cerebellum, tiny supernumerary granule cells project to a monolayer of giant Purkinje neurons that reweight synaptic inputs under the instructive influence of a unitary synaptic input from climbing fibres. What might this predominantly feedforward organization confer computationally? Here we

Decoding Imagined and Spoken Phrases From Non-invasive Neural (MEG) Signals.

Speech production is a hierarchical mechanism involving the synchronization of the brain and the oral articulators, where the intention of linguistic concepts is transformed into meaningful sounds. Individuals with locked-in syndrome (fully paralyzed but aware) lose their motor ability completely including articulation and even eyeball movement. The neural pathway may be the only option to resume a certain level of communication for these patients. Current brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) use patients' visual and attentional correlates to build communication, resulting in a slow communication

Structured cerebellar connectivity supports resilient pattern separation.

The cerebellum is thought to help detect and correct errors between intended and executed commands1,2 and is critical for social behaviours, cognition and emotion3-6. Computations for motor control must be performed quickly to correct errors in real time and should be sensitive to small differences between patterns for fine error correction while being resilient to noise7. Influential theories of cerebellar information processing have largely assumed random network connectivity, which increases the encoding capacity of the network's first layer8-13. However, maximizing encoding capacity reduce

2.5D HAU-Net with gated spatial attention for automatic hippocampus segmentation in MRI.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus is a key brain region and biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Accurate automated hippocampal segmentation is essential for anatomical and pathological analysis. However, the gap between model complexity and available computational resources hampers the clinical deployment of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, often resulting in limited accuracy and generalization. NEW METHOD: This study introduces a 2.5D U-Net-based framework that integrates an attention mechanism for efficient and accurate MRI hippocampal segmentation. Three consecutive slices (anterior,

FMC-Net: Fine-grained multi-lesion classification in wireless capsule endoscopy via attention-guided feature interaction.

Accurate detection of multiple lesions in wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) images is crucial for gastrointestinal disease diagnosis. However, high inter-class similarity, intra-class variability, and the frequent coexistence of different lesion types within one image make this task highly challenging. To overcome these limitations, we propose a fine-grained multi-lesion classification network (FMC-Net) that enhances lesion discrimination and support single-label/multi-label classification through an innovative attention-guided feature selection module and a flexible classifier. The attention-g

Compressive learning scaffolds higher-order network structure to enhance human knowledge acquisition.

Humans naturally seek knowledge, yet integrating vast, fragmented information remains challenging. Traditionally, knowledge acquisition has relied on random walks within network-an unguided and inefficient process. Here, we introduce "compressive learning", a conceptual framework that embeds higher-order structural features-specifically node-degree inhomogeneity-into pre-learning trajectories to scaffold more efficient learning. We show that scale-free networks, owing to their pronounced degree inhomogeneity, are more compressible and more learnable than other network types. Critically, pre-le

Causal spectral segmenter: counterfactual graph reasoning for weakly supervised pathology segmentation.

MOTIVATION: Weakly supervised pathology segmentation aims to alleviate the reliance on costly pixel-level annotations, yet remains challenging due to severe tissue heterogeneity, complex morphological patterns, and strong contextual confounding in histopathology images. Existing transformer-based methods often learn spurious correlations between lesions and surrounding tissues, while graph-based approaches tend to suffer from feature over-smoothing, resulting in degraded boundary delineation and localization accuracy. RESULTS: To address these challenges, we propose a novel Causal Spectral Se

Acoustic-optical joint underwater object detection with multi-modality correlation features matching network.

Underwater object detection is of significant importance for exploring underwater world, however, there is little research focusing on multi-modality detection in this field. Due to weak image alignment of underwater camera and sonar device, there is big challenge for object detection with underwater acoustic-optical images. On the basis of images from underwater camera and sonar device, this paper proposes a novel acoustic-optical joint multi-modality detection model (AOMNet in short) for underwater object detection. At the feature level of AOMNet model, we propose CPMFM based on cross-featur

Zero-shot cross-domain image composition via self attention injection.

Leveraging the robust generative priors of diffusion models, image composition has achieved remarkable progress. However, existing approaches continue to grapple with a persistent dilemma: the trade-off between maintaining the structural fidelity of the source object and achieving deep stylistic harmonization with the background. We attribute this limitation to two primary factors: 1) the insufficient disentanglement of geometric structure and visual appearance in current architectures, leading to conflicts during the generation process; and 2) the reliance on global statistical alignment tech

BRAINHash: Brain-Inspired Region-Aligned Interaction Network for Unsupervised Cross-Modal Hashing.

Unsupervised cross-modal hashing (UCMH) has attracted considerable attention owing to its minimal reliance on manual annotations and low retrieval latency. However, existing UCMH methods based on contrastive learning frameworks combined with multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) often suffer from two key limitations: the inherent challenge in constructing reliable positive-negative sample pairs under unsupervised settings, and the restricted representational capacity of static network architectures. Inspired by cognitive mechanisms observed in the human brain, where specialized regions support distinc

RSAPower: Random Style Augmentation Driven Structure Perception Network for Generalized Retinal OCT Fluid Segmentation.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging is extensively utilized for non-invasive observation of pathological conditions, such as retinal fluid-associated diseases. Accurate fluid segmentation in OCT images is therefore critical for quantifying disease severity and aiding clinical decision-making. However, achieving precise segmentation remains challenging due to pathological variations in shape and size, uncertain boundaries, and low contrast of fluid. Most importantly, variability in OCT image styles across different vendors and centers significantly affects fluid segmentation, leading to

[Review of application of U-Net and Transformer in colon polyp image segmentation].

Colorectal cancer typically originates from the malignant transformation of colonic polyps, making the automatic and accurate segmentation of colonic polyps crucial for clinical diagnosis. Deep learning techniques such as U-Net and Transformer can effectively extract implicit features from medical images, and thus have significant potential in colonic polyp image segmentation. This paper first introduced commonly used evaluation metrics and datasets for colonic polyp segmentation. It then reviewed the application of segmentation models based on U-Net, Transformer, and their hybrid approaches i

HyperGraph-based capsule temporal memory network for efficient and explainable diabetic retinopathy detection in retinal imaging.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a chronic complication of diabetes in which the retinal damage may cause vision impairment or blindness if left untreated. The challenges in DR detection are mostly due to the morphological variations of retinal lesions, e.g., microaneurysms, hemorrhages, and exudates, and the imaging condition variability between different clinical environments. Current state of the art deep learning models like convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN) and transformer-based architectures are computationally expensive, not robust to noisy datasets and have
