Arthroscopic-assisted reduction is one recommended technique for pediatric distal tibial epiphyseal fractures. A 15-year-old male patient with a triplane distal tibial epiphyseal fracture (Tillaux type) was scheduled for arthroscopic reduction and pinning, which failed to provide adequate fracture reduction. Open surgery was subsequently performed, which revealed a capsular interposition in the fracture line attributable to an anterior capsular tear of the ankle. The possibility of capsular interposition should always be taken into consideration when problems such as those described in this ca

INTRODUCTION: Pertrochanteric fractures are among the most common conditions in trauma surgery, and the treatment of choice is closed reduction and internal fixation. The main predictor of a good functional outcome is the quality of reduction; therefore, open reduction is often required. The primary objective of this study was to analyze the outcomes regarding reduction quality in pertrochanteric fractures requiring open reduction and to describe the techniques used through our treatment algorithm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted including all patients w

In this case report, we present a 13-years-old patient who sustained a Monteggia equivalent fracture along with an ipsilateral distal radius fracture following a fall on the elbow. Comminuted ulnar fracture was treated with open reduction and internal fixation with a bridging plate. After restoring the ulnar length, the radial neck fracture was successfully reduced. The distal radius fracture was managed conservatively. Our literature review shows that, the patient is one of the comparatively older patients treated with open reduction and internal fixation in this area and that a successful ou

BACKGROUND: Though most of the pediatric diaphyseal forearm bone fracture can be treated with closed reduction and cast application, indications for operative intervention in pediatric both-bone forearm fractures include open fractures, irreducible fractures, and unstable fractures. Controversy exists as to what amount of angulation, displacement, and rotation constitutes an acceptable reduction.
OBJECTIVE: To review union time and functional outcome of pediatric diaphyseal forearm bone fracture managed with intramedullary rush pin by closed or open reduction.
METHODS: Fifty patients with bo

INTRODUCTION: Subtrochanteric neck of femur fractures are a challenge to treat due to anatomical and biomechanical factors. Poor reduction, varus deformity, nonunion and return to theatre risks are high. A cerclage wire can augment an intramedullary nail to help fracture reduction and construct stability. Concerns exist regarding the use of cerclage wire on fracture zone vascularity. The aim of this study was to assess the benefits and adverse outcomes associated with the use of cerclage wiring.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 7-year retrospective review of all subtrochanteric fractures at a Level 1

Fractures of the mandibular angle are plagued with the highest rate of complication of all mandibular fractures. Over the past 10 years, various forms of treatment for these fractures were performed on an indigent inner city population. Treatment included: 1) closed reduction or intraoral open reduction and non-rigid fixation; 2) extraoral open reduction and internal fixation with an AO/ASIF reconstruction bone plate; 3) intraoral open reduction and internal fixation using a solitary lag screw; 4) intraoral open reduction and internal fixation using two 2.0 mm mini-dynamic compression plates;

INTRODUCTION: The way strength recovers after reduction of pediatric fractures of the upper extremity has not previously been the specific scope of research. This is remarkable, since strength measurements are often used as an outcome measure in studies on trauma of the upper extremity. The aim of this study was to evaluate how strength recovers after sustainment of fractures of the forearm, wrist or hand treated by closed or open reduction in children and adolescents in the first 6 months after trauma. How much strength is lost at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after trauma, and is this loss

Glenoid rim fractures, accompanied by acute glenohumeral dislocation or subluxation usually results in persistent instability. Traditionally open reduction and internal fixation has been recommended in displaced intra-articular glenoid fractures. However, open reduction is difficult, and it may not be possible to address the associated intra-articular soft-tissue injuries. A few reports of arthroscopic-assisted fixation of these fractures have been recently published. The most anatomic method for addressing an acute glenoid rim lesion is a reduction (either open or arthroscopic) and internal f

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open traumatic dislocation of the hip in children is rare.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the case of a child aged 9 years, who presented following a motor vehicle accident an anterior open dislocation of the left hip associated with a fracture separation of the trochanter, a fracture of the homolateral humerus and a fracture of the contralateral femur. He was treated by open reduction of the dislocation and pinning of the various fractures.
RESULTS: After 15 months functional result of the hip was good. The radiograms showed early signs of necrosis of the femoral he

Displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures represent life-altering injuries. Difficulty obtaining and maintaining calcaneal morphology and the significant risk of wound healing complications with an extensile lateral incision exist. Open reduction with internal fixation as a joint-sparing approach has been studied. Closed manipulation to restore calcaneal morphology, intra-osseous fracture reduction, and rigid locked CALCANAIL fracture nail fixation have recently been applied to Sanders IV fracture patterns. Spontaneous conversion to primary subtalar joint arthrodesis using the same instrum

Greater arc injuries are fracture dislocations that involve the perilunar carpal bones. The commonest of these injuries is the dorsal transscaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation. The recommended treatment for acute injuries is open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation of the scaphoid fracture through a dorsal midline approach. Stability to the midcarpal joint is thus provided and no further pins are needed. Established scaphoid nonunions are treated by bone grafting and Herbert screw fixation through a volar approach. Scaphocapitate fracture syndrome is treated by open reduction and pin fix

The management of intraarticular fractures such as tibial plateau fractures in weightbearing joints is inherently complex. Bicondylar tibial plateau fractures resulting from high energy trauma are particularly difficult to treat successfully. The objectives in managing these fractures are to obtain adequate reduction and appropriate stabilization while allowing early range of motion and limiting potential morbidity. The incidence of complications and long-term sequelae is relatively high in cases treated with traditional open reduction and internal fixation. From 1986 through 1993, 32 bicondyl

Background and Objectives: Non-union is a severe complication of traumatic fracture that often leads to disability and decreased quality of life, with treatment remaining complex due to a lack of standardized protocols. This study examines the effectiveness of autologous conditioned serum (ACS) for non-union in patients who have a failed open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). Materials and Methods: Eleven patients with confirmed non-union at least 9 months post-ORIF or total hip replacement were enrolled. These patients received ACS treatment on the lesion sites once to three times monthly a

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are the most common traumatic bone injuries of the lower limb. Over 50% of ankle fractures occur at the syndesmosis level (type AO B). The goal of treatment is to achieve an anatomical reduction and appropriate stabilization. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical-functional and radiological results, and complications of minimally invasive reduction and fixation technique for ankle fractures type AO B. The surgical technique also is detailed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective analysis of 451 patients undergoing surgery for type AO B displaced ankle frac

BACKGROUND: Intertrochanteric fractures are commonly encountered in day-to-day trauma practice having various fracture patterns. Adequate reduction and appropriate fixation methodology is required for optimum results. However, failure rates are very high in unstable fractures. Here we describe a unique unstable variant of intertrochanteric fracture characterized by a long spike of proximal fragment, irreducibility of fracture with standard traction and internal rotation and soft tissue interposition. This appears as typical figure of 3 signs on right side and epsilon ε sign on left side on AP

Acute laryngeal trauma is estimated to occur in approximately one patient per 14 500 to 42 500 emergency room admissions. If the larynx is injured, its vital functions are affected and can be threatened in case of severe injury. Soft cartilage offers no protective advantage, which is the reason why young as well as older individuals are at risk of thyroid cartilage fracture. Experimentation on cadaver larynx has demonstrated that virtually all laryngeal fractures are longitudinally oriented. Furthermore, muscular pull can contribute to a misalignment of the fractures. As stated by Bent and Por

BACKGROUND: The fractures of proximal humerus have a high incidence in elderly patients, especially 3- or 4-part fracture. There are 4 main treatments including nonoperation, open reduction and internal fixation(ORIF), hemiarthroplasty(HA) and reverse shoulder arthroplasty(RSA). However, which one is the optimal choice remains a controversial topic.
METHODS: Through the search of three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane), the randomized controlled trials of 3- or 4-part proximal humeral fracture, until the end of July 2017, which is concerned with the elderly patients, were id
