Fathers' Sensitivity in Infancy and Externalizing Problems in Middle Childhood: The Role of Coparenting.

The present study examined the role of father sensitivity and couple coparenting quality in the first 2 years of life in relation to the development of externalizing behavior problems in middle childhood, focusing on the unique role of fathers. In this study, 125 mothers, fathers, and their first-born children were followed from 8 months to age 7 years. Paternal sensitivity was rated when infants were 8 and 24 months old. Fathers were videotaped at home playing, feeding, and changing their 8-month-old infants' clothes. They also were videotaped in a lab playing with their 24-month-olds and sol

Parental corporal punishment and child anxiety in China: The moderating role of HPA-axis Activity.

BACKGROUND: Although negative associations between parental corporal punishment and child anxiety are well-documented, the potential moderators of these associations are not well characterized. Contemporary developmental perspectives suggest that biological vulnerability may influence the degree to which the environment affects child development. Thus, this study investigated the moderating role of one potential physiological marker, HPA-axis activity, in the relations between both maternal and paternal corporal punishment and child anxiety in China. METHODS: Participants were 158 elementary

Noninvasive prenatal exclusion of haemoglobin Bart's using foetal DNA from maternal plasma.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal diagnosis of alpha-thalassaemia requires invasive testing associated with a risk of miscarriage. Cell-free foetal DNA in maternal plasma presents an alternative source of foetal genetic material for noninvasive prenatal diagnosis. We aimed to exclude HbBart's noninvasively by detection of unaffected paternal alleles in maternal plasma using quantitative fluorescence PCR (QF-PCR). METHOD: Microsatellite markers (16PTEL05, 16PTEL06) within the breakpoint regions of -(SEA), -(FIL) and -(THAI) deletions were analysed using QF-PCR of maternal plasma from 30 families. In this bl

Epigenetic Signatures in Family Clusters: Links Between Male Fertility and Autism Risk.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) prevalence has increased globally. Emerging evidence implicates paternal genetic and epigenetic factors, particularly sperm DNA methylation alterations, in shaping offspring neurodevelopmental risk. Advanced paternal age is associated with increased de novo mutations and epigenetic changes in germ cells. Recent studies have explored distinct sperm methylation signatures in fathers of autistic children, often involving genes critical for neural signaling, transcription, and synaptic function. Longitudinal analyses further linked paternal sperm methylation patterns

Parental origin of the supernumerary chromosome in trisomy 18.

The parental origin of an extra chromosome in Edwards syndrome has been investigated in 23 families by the combination of the VNTR probe pERT25, two microsatellite polymorphisms for D18S34 and D18S40, and several two-allele polymorphisms. Of the 23 cases, 22 were informative, with 17 (77%) being maternal and 5 (23%) paternal in origin. These results support the previous investigations, suggesting that trisomy 18 is predominantly of maternal origin, although a higher rate of paternally derived cases was observed than previously reported. A significant increase in maternal age was found to be as

Parental oxytocin responses during skin-to-skin contact in pre-term infants.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal skin-to-skin contact (M-SSC) has been found to reduce adverse consequences of prematurity, however, its neurobiological mechanisms have been unknown. The purpose of the study was to examine oxytocin mechanism in modulating parental stress and anxiety during M-SSC and P-SSC (paternal SSC) with their pre-term infants. METHODS: Twenty-eight stable pre-term infants and their parents (triads) were recruited in a 2-day cross-over study and 26 mothers and 19 fathers completed the study protocol. Each triad was randomly assigned to one of the two sequences: M-SSC was conducted on

Sex dependent transmission of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome associated with a reciprocal translocation t(9;11)(p11.2;p15.5).

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a disorder associated with neonatal hypoglycaemia, increased growth potential, and predisposition to Wilms's tumour (WT) and other malignancies, has been mapped to 11p15. The association with 11p15 duplications of paternal origin, of balanced translocations and inversions with breakpoints within 11p15.4-p15.5 of maternal origin, and the demonstration of uniparental paternal 11p15 isodisomy in some sporadic cases point towards the involvement of genomic imprinting. In agreement with this, we show the paternal origin of a de novo 9;11 translocation in a phenoty

Genetic Nurture Effects on Type 2 Diabetes Among Chinese Han Adults: A Family-Based Design.

Background/Objectives: Genes and environments were transmitted across generations. Parents' genetics influence the environments of their offspring; these two modes of inheritance can produce a genetic nurture effect, also known as indirect genetic effects. Such indirect effects may partly account for estimated genetic variance in T2D. However, the well-established specific genetic risk factors about genetic nurture effect for T2D are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the genetic nurture effect on type 2 diabetes and reveal the potential underlying mechanism using publicly a

The generation that lived during/participated in the war and the generation that inherited it: association between veterans PTSD and adult offspring's emotional regulation strategies and alexithymia levels.

BACKGROUND: The long-term repercussions that war can have on both war generations and post-war generations lack in the literature. It is imperative to understand the psychological consequences of the Lebanese Civil War that took place from 1975 to 1990, on the offspring of those who took part in it. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to assess the association between paternal/veterans PTSD and adult offspring's emotional regulation strategies and alexithymia levels, 30 years after the end of war. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was carried out between September 2020 and September 20

Parental Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease as a Predictor for Offspring Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: The risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher for individuals with a first-degree relative who developed premature CVD (with a threshold at age 55 years for a male or 65 years for a female). However, little is known about the effect that each unit increase or decrease of maternal or paternal age of onset of CVD has on offspring age of onset of CVD. We hypothesized that there is an association between maternal and paternal age of onset of CVD and offspring age of onset of CVD. METHODS: We used the Framingham Heart Study database and performed conditional imputation for CVD-cen

Molecular and immunohistochemical analyses of the focal form of congenital hyperinsulinism.

Congenital hyperinsulinism is a rare pancreatic endocrine cell disorder that has been categorized histologically into diffuse and focal forms. In focal hyperinsulinism, the pancreas contains a focus of endocrine cell adenomatous hyperplasia, and the patients have been reported to possess paternally inherited mutations of the ABCC8 and KCNJ11 genes, which encode subunits of an ATP-sensitive potassium channel (K(ATP)). In addition, the hyperplastic endocrine cells show loss of maternal 11p15, where imprinted genes such as p57(kip2) reside. In order to evaluate whether all cases of focal hyperins

Father involvement in pregnancy and attachment to their baby: Depression and partner relationships in a sample of Black fathers.

Black fathers, particularly those who are low-income, unmarried, and from minoritized communities, face significant barriers to full participation in their children's lives. Prenatal challenges include scheduling conflicts, living arrangements, and relationship dynamics with the child's mother. These factors critically impact early paternal involvement and infant bonding. Despite the importance of father involvement, research on Black fathers' prenatal involvement and infant attachment remains limited. This study examines 75 Black fathers in the United States, investigating how relationship qu

Influence of substance use on male reproductive health and offspring outcomes.

The prevalence of substance use globally is rising and is highest among men of reproductive age. In Africa, and South and Central America, cannabis use disorder is most prevalent and in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central America, Canada and the USA, opioid use disorder predominates. Substance use might be contributing to the ongoing global decline in male fertility, and emerging evidence has linked paternal substance use with short-term and long-term adverse effects on offspring development and outcomes. This trend is concerning given that substance use is increasing, including during t

Review: Sex chromosome evolution and the expression of sex-specific genes in the placenta.

Sex chromosomes have a disproportionate influence on health and disease. Both the X and Y are atypical in gene content and activity, as a result of their unique evolutionary trajectory. The X and Y chromosomes originated in a pair of autosomes, and differentiated as the Y chromosome degenerated progressively. The Y contains few active genes and is composed largely of repetitive DNA sequences. Most Y genes have copies on the X from which they evolved; this includes even the sex-determining gene SRY as well as several genes required for spermatogenesis. The X contains a disproportionate number o

[Transient neonatal diabetes associated with uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 6].

A female neonate was born after a 37.4-week pregnancy to a healthy primipara. There was a family history of diabetes on the father's side. The neonate's birth weight was 1,955 g and she was 43 cm long. Physical examination showed bilateral palpebral edema, macroglossia, umbilical hernia and abdominal distension. At 29 hours of life she presented hyperglycemia without acidosis or ketosis. Insulin treatment was started and maintained intermittently until 38 days of life. The patient presented anemia from the second day of life, which required iron therapy and blood transfusion one month after bi

The parental origin of X chromosomes in XX males determined using restriction fragment length polymorphisms.

The inheritance of several X-linked restriction fragment length polymorphisms ( RFLPs ) is examined in seven 46,XX males and their immediate relatives. The XX males are shown to have inherited a paternal and a maternal RFLP allele in each of the five (of seven) families in which these X-linked markers are informative. In the other two families, a maternal X-chromosomal contribution is demonstrated, but a paternal contribution cannot be determined. We conclude that most, if not all, XX males inherit one paternal and one maternal X chromosome. A segment of single-copy DNA specific to the short a

Explanatory style, dispositional optimism, and reported parental behavior.

The relationship between two cognitive personality constructs (explanatory style and dispositional optimism) and retrospective self-reports of maternal and paternal behavior were investigated. College students (62 men and 145 women) completed the Life Orientation Test, Attributional Style Questionnaire, and Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire in a single session. As predicted, dispositional optimism was positively correlated with reported maternal and paternal warmth/acceptance and negatively correlated with aggression/hostility, neglect/indifference, and undifferentiated rejection dur
