Establishing visual category boundaries between objects: a PET study.

Individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often have problems in recognizing common objects. This visual agnosia may stem from difficulties in establishing appropriate visual boundaries between visually similar objects. In support of this hypothesis, showed that AD subjects have difficulties in establishing visual category boundaries between continuously graded shapes. In an attempt to investigate the neural basis of these impairments, the current study required a group of neurologically healthy elderly participants to categorically classify a series of ellipses varying in width while regional

Spatial representations and multiple-visual-systems hypotheses: evidence from a developmental deficit in visual location and orientation processing.

AH, a young, well-educated woman, has a developmental deficit in processing visual location and orientation information. Her deficit manifests itself in a wide range of visual tasks, including visually-guided reaching, copying pictures and words, and responding verbally to the location or orientation of visual stimuli; however, her performance in non-visual localization tasks is intact. AH's visual location and orientation errors are systematic left-right or up-down reflections (e.g., reaching to the far right for an object on the far left). More specifically, the errors involve reflection acr

I'm sitting here feeling aphasic! A study of recurrent perseverative errors elicited in unimpaired speakers.

In this study, the recurrent perseverative errors produced by 44 speakers without impairment were examined in picture naming and reading aloud tasks under a fast response deadline. The proportion of perseverative relative to non-perseverative errors was greater in picture naming, the more error-prone task, than in reading aloud. Additionally, although perseverative errors were less likely to be related to the target than non-perseverative errors, the overall distribution of perseverative and non-perseverative errors in each task was similar. It is concluded that the perseverative errors produc

The lateral occipital complex subserves the perceptual persistence of motion-defined groupings.

How are the bits and pieces of retinal information assembled and integrated to form the coherent objects that we see? One long-established principle is that elements that move as a group are linked together. For instance a fragmented line-drawing of an object, placed on a background of randomly distributed short lines, can be impossible to see. But if the object moves relative to the background, its shape is instantly recognized. Even after the motion stops, the percept of the object persists briefly before it fades into the background of random lines. Where in the brain does the percept of th

Retinal function in the von Hippel-Lindau disease.

PURPOSE: To assess the retinal function in patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). PATIENTS: Studies were undertaken in 12 patients (17 eyes) with detected VHL gene mutation and 12 normal healthy controls (17 eyes). METHODS: Pattern ERG (PERG), standard flash electroretinogram (ERG) recordings were performed in accordance with the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) standards. RESULTS: In VHL patients, electrophysiological statistically significant changes were found. In PERG examination, increased latency of P50 was found in the total VHL group (p

Dynamic shape integration in extrastriate cortex.

BACKGROUND: In anorthoscopic viewing conditions, observers can perceive a moving object through a narrow slit even when only portions of its contour are visible at any time. We used fMRI to examine the contribution of early and later visual cortical areas to dynamic shape integration. Observers' success at integrating the shape of the slit-viewed object was manipulated by varying the degree to which the stimulus was dynamically distorted. Line drawings of common objects were either moderately distorted, strongly distorted, or shown undistorted. Phenomenologically, increasing the stimulus disto

The perception of breast cancer: what differentiates missed from reported cancers in mammography?

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Mammographers map endogenous and exogenous factors into decisions whether to report the presence of a malignant finding in a mammogram case. Thus, to understand how image-based elements are translated into observer-based decisions, the authors used spatial frequency analysis to model the areas on mammograms that attracted visual attention, in addition to the areas localized as abnormal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four mammographers read 40 two-view mammogram cases, of which 30 contained at least one malignant lesion visible on one or two views. Their eye positions were r

Pentagon copying is more impaired in dementia with Lewy bodies than in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVES: In many cases the clinical differentiation of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been difficult. Because many neuropsychological studies have reported greater visuospatial/constructional impairment in DLB than in AD, it was determined whether accuracy in copying the interlocking pentagons item on the mini mental state examination (MMSE) may be helpful in distinguishing patients with DLB from those with AD relatively early in the course of the dementia. METHODS: All cases of neuropathologically proved DLB and AD in the Center

Perceptual organization in schizophrenia: the processing of symmetrical configurations.

The hypothesis that the perceptual organization dysfunction of patients with poor premorbid schizophrenia is due to a deficit in global visual sensory store processing was tested by assessing their ability to process symmetrical configurations that develop early and have strong prepotent structures. Two same-different judgment tasks in which performance varies as a function of the symmetrical organization and task demands were administered to participants with good and poor premorbid schizophrenia, those with mood disorders, and normal controls. Like the other groups, poor premorbid schizophre

Can face recognition really be dissociated from object recognition?

We argue that the current literature on prosopagnosia fails to demonstrate unequivocal evidence for a disproportionate impairment for faces as compared to nonface objects. Two prosopagnosic subjects were tested for the discrimination of objects from several categories (face as well as nonface) at different levels of categorization (basic, subordinate, and exemplar levels). Several dependent measures were obtained including accuracy, signal detection measures, and response times. The results from Experiments 1 to 4 demonstrate that, in simultaneous-matching tasks, response times may reveal impa

Object segregation in 8-month-old infants.

Two experiments examined 8-month-old infants' use of configural and physical knowledge in segregating three-dimensional adjacent displays. The infants in Experiment I saw two identical yellow octagons standing side by side: in the test events, a hand grasped the right octagon and pulled it to the side. The infants looked reliably longer when the octagons moved apart than when they moved together, suggesting that the infants (a) perceived the octagons as a single unit and hence (b) expected them to move together and were surprised when they did not. The infants in Experiment 2 saw a yellow cyli

Reaction times and dyslexia.

Five groups of children, including two groups of dyslexics (aged 15 and 11 years), were tested on simple reaction, selective choice reaction, and lexical decision tasks. In simple reactions to a pure tone, the dyslexic children responded as quickly as their chronological age controls and significantly faster than their reading age controls. In selective choice reactions to pure tones, the dyslexic children were significantly impaired compared with their chronological age controls and no faster than their reading age controls. This speed impairment obtained even though a selective choice reacti

[The Freiburg Stereotest. On assessment of stereovision in automobile driver examination].

BACKGROUND: The "Freiburg Stereotest" is a new instrument where disparate pictures are generated by a computer and displayed on one single high resolution video monitor. In the present work, the Freiburg Stereotest was used to check the stereo qualification for certain categories of driver's licence. For this purpose, a determination of the smallest detectable disparity is not reasonable. Rather, it should be checked whether or not a certain disparity, usually well above threshold, is recognized with a sufficient reliability. We have chosen a disparity of 100 arcsec; this value is considered t

Memory for position and dynamic representations.

Memory for the position of an object is biased. When asked to judge whether an object has changed its position with respect to a position shown a few milliseconds before, observers tend to detect the displacement more often when the displacement is not in the expected direction (downward for a falling object). The hypothesis proposed by Freyd (1983, 1987) states that the internal representation of an object is intrinsically dynamic. Therefore, the forces perceived as acting on the object affect the representation. Quantitative predictions of this model were tested in three experiments by measu

Infants' coordination of auditory and visual depth information.

Using the preferential-looking procedure infants 5, 7, and 9 months of age were presented two videoimages side by side on separate monitors accompanied by a soundtrack that matched one of the images. Each infant was presented: (1) a stationary drum-beating toy paired with the same toy approaching and receding in depth, to assess infants' recognition both that changing sound amplitude is a property of an object that is moving in space and that constancy in amplitude is a property of a stationary object; (2) a drum-beating toy moving horizontally paired with one approaching and receding in depth

Can recognition of living things be selectively impaired?

Brain damage sometimes seems to impair recognition of living things, despite relatively preserved recognition of nonliving things. The most straightforward interpretation of this dissociation is that the recognition of living things depends on some specialized mechanisms that are not needed for the recognition of nonliving things. However, there are alternative interpretations of the dissociation in terms of the greater complexity or inter-item similarity of living things, or the more specific, within-category identifications that are usually required for living things. Surprisingly, the relev

Attentional functioning and relational learning.

Stimulus properties such as similarity-dissimilarity and novelty-familiarity are inherently relational and are embedded in ubiquitous stimulus contexts. Children with mental retardation and young children without mental retardation are particularly prone to failure on relational tasks such as oddity and match-to-sample (Greenfield, 1985; Soraci et al., in press). Converging evidence from a number of studies suggest that a critical factor in the performance discrepancies between these and other children is a differential sensitivity to relational information. In these studies relational charact

Hemispheric asymmetry in the processing of high and low spatial frequencies: a facial recognition task.

The research investigated the relationship between spatial frequency and visual field in a facial recognition task. Faces of neutral affect (Ekman, 1979) were tachistoscopically presented to the right or left visual field. The faces were presented alone, or masked with square wave gratings of 1, 24, or 48 cycles/degree, for a duration of 10 msec. Accuracy in recognizing each target face from a group of five served as the dependent measure. Subjects were 15 males and 15 females. ANOVA results included a frequency x visual field interaction effect (p less than .001). As was hypothesized, LVF err

Visual agnosia and amnesia from a left unilateral lesion.

This case report describes the behavior of a patient with a visual agnosia of the associative type, developing to optic agnosia at a later stage. Language, general intelligence and right hemisphere functions were well preserved, but recognition of visually presented objects, colors, faces, words, and complex stimuli was impaired. Agnosia was accompanied by a multimodal amnestic syndrome. CT displayed a focal left hemisphere lesion. The observed pathomorphology is not consistent with a bilateral visuolimbic disconnection syndrome, as suggested from previous case studies. Significant components

Pattern visual evoked responses in multiple sclerosis.

The latency of the first major positive component of the visual evoked response to pattern reversal was measured from a midoccipital electrode for each eye in 30 patients with a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Their latencies were compared with those of a group of 18 normal subjects and 18 patients with other neurological diseases. Of 26 MS patients with a measurable response, 77% gave values that were outside the ranges of the two control groups. A total of 75% of the MS patients without history or findings of optic neuritis had an abnormal response. The procedure appears to be
