Spatiotemporal analysis of influenza, pneumonia, and respiratory syncytial virus in association with environmental factors: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Influenza, pneumonia, and respiratory syncytial virus are the leading causes of respiratory morbidity and mortality globally. Environmental factors influence the spread of these diseases, yet considerable variation remains in how these relationships are modelled across different climates and geographic scales. This systematic review evaluates the use of spatiotemporal frameworks to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and these diseases. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified peer-reviewed studi

Multi-level patterns predict cannabis use onset among youth.

Early cannabis initiation during youth is associated with elevated risk for harmful substance use, mental disorders, and cognitive impairments. To account for the complexity behind cannabis use initiation, we performed a data-driven analysis across 151 measurements spanning seven domains from the individual, microsystem, and exosystem level of influences: biobehavior, cognition, brain MRI, family, peer, neighborhood and legal factors. Data were from 450 cannabis-naïve youths from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) (baseline age: 12-21 years). Within

The role of team dynamics and team acquaintance in group metacognition during medical students' collaborative learning.

BACKGROUND: Group metacognition, the capacity to reflect on a group’s cognitive processes, including awareness of other members’ information organization, planning, and efforts for improvement, plays a critical role in collaborative learning efficacy. In medical education, group metacognition supports students in discussing clinical cases, recognizing peers’ diagnostic reasoning, and jointly evaluating their team’s approach to patients care. However, factors influencing group metacognitive competency remain underexplored among medical students. We hypothesized that in collaborative learning, t

Patient and physical therapist perspectives on spinal manipulative therapy for low back pain and associated clinical outcomes: protocol for a prospective, single-arm intervention study.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is a common manual therapy intervention provided by healthcare providers for patients with low back pain (LBP). Responses to SMT are influenced by interactions between the patient and provider. Contextual factors may be specific to the patient, provider, patient-provider relationship or environment in which treatment is provided, with all capable of influencing clinical outcomes. The overall goal of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of contextual factors associated with manual therapy utilisation, perception and outcomes, from both pat

Factors affecting the implementation of guideline-based prophylactic antiemetic therapy for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in Japan: a protocol for a hospital-based qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) decrease patients' quality of life and negatively impact treatment outcomes. Although standard prophylactic antiemetic therapy for acute CINV recommended by guidelines is effective, poor guideline implementation is a worldwide problem. In Japan, prophylactic antiemetic therapy is relatively well implemented for chemotherapy associated with high emetogenic risk, while implementation gaps are observed for that with low emetogenic risk.Although most reports on factors influencing appropriate antiemetic prescription focus on physicians'

What Moves Parents to Recommend Digital Mental Health Tools for Youth? Behavioral Insights and Implications.

In this study we aimed to examine behavioral determinants influencing parents' willingness to recommend digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) to their youth, guided by the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 parents of adolescents aged 13-19 years with mental health concerns. Interview transcripts were thematically analyzed using a hybrid inductive-deductive approach. Findings were mapped onto COM-B domains. Capability barriers included low awareness, uncertainty about SSIs, and difficulty navigating digital tools. O

How Consistency and Alleged Perpetrator Relationship Affect Adults' Credibility and Coaching Judgements in Child Sexual Abuse Cases.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) victims often withhold disclosure due to coaching by the alleged perpetrator to deny the abuse. Adults, however, are generally poor at detecting coached lies in children, potentially because such reports are highly consistent. However, little is known about how the victim-alleged perpetrator relationship influences adults' perceptions of credibility and coaching in CSA cases. In this study, jury-eligible participants (N = 183) read one of six CSA mock-forensic interview transcripts involving a 12-year-old boy giving testimony containing evidence of CSA coaching. The tr

Understanding the Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence and HIV Status Disclosure Across Health Care Settings in Eastern and Southern Africa: A Scoping Review.

HIV status disclosure is an ethical obligation and, in some jurisdictions, a legal requirement that supports treatment adherence. In Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), where intimate partner violence (IPV) is prevalent, disclosure may have harmful consequences. The objective of this scoping review was to map the relationship between IPV and HIV disclosure across health care settings in ESA. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, peer-reviewed English-language studies (2012-2024) were identified through EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Google Scholar using a SPICE-informed search strategy. Thirty-six quantitat

Motivations for Starting and Stopping PrEP: Experiences of Adolescent Girls and Young Women in the HPTN 082 Trial.

Oral PrEP effectiveness depends on consistent use during periods of potential HIV exposure, but adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) find this challenging. Data on PrEP use decision-making and alignment with risk among AGYW are limited. From 2016 to 2018, we conducted in-depth interviews with participants in HPTN 082, an open-label PrEP study in South Africa and Zimbabwe, to explore reasons for PrEP starts, stops, and restarts. Of 60 PrEP acceptors, 12 delayed acceptance, 15 used PrEP intermittently, 18 paused and restarted PrEP, and 13 permanently discontinued PrEP during 12-month follow-u

"It's Whack, It's Not Gonna Work": Feasibility of Sociocentric Network Recruitment for Interventions Among Black, Latine, and Caribbean Priority Populations in New York City.

INTRODUCTION: Black, Latine, and Caribbean (BLC) sexual and gender minorities (SGM) face structural HIV inequities. Sociocentric interventions may address these barriers, but it is unclear if respondent-driven sampling (RDS) can recruit existing BLC SGM friendship groups or if sociocentric HIV prevention interventions are feasible. METHODS: Using an exploratory mixed-methods design (August/2022-January/2024, New York, NY), we recruited participants into a sociocentric RDS group (sRDS) or an individual-level peer referral (PR) group, with qualitative interviews drawn from quantitative particip

Portrayal of Deaf characters in Korean movies.

Characters in movies have the potential to influence perceptions of how people see themselves. Deaf adolescents who have little opportunity to interact with Deaf peers or family members may be particularly drawn to Deaf people they see in the media. How the media portrays Deaf people may impact Deaf adolescents' self-perceptions of and language preferences. Yet little is known about the ways Deaf people are portrayed in movies, particularly films developed outside of the United States and not in English. In this study, we utilized content analysis to explore the portrayal of Deaf characters in
