Role of optical coherence tomography angiography in retinal tumors: A narrative review.

Intraocular tumors constitute a small subset of cases in ophthalmologic practice. Proper diagnosis of intraocular tumors is crucial because some pose threat to vision and life, while others may indicate underlying systemic disorders. Intraocular tumors comprise benign and malignant lesions affecting the retina, choroid, optic disc, iris, and ciliary body. Retinal tumors can be classified as vascular, neural, glial, and retinal pigment epithelial tumors. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive imaging modality employed in diagnosis and management of retinal and choroida

Tattooing: immediate and long-term adverse reactions and complications.

Tattooing has become a popular global trend in industrialised countries, with the highest prevalence rates of up to 30-40 % in the adult population younger than 40 years. Common tattoo inks may contain heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and primary aromatic amines, toxic if exceeding permissible limits. It is estimated that about 14.36 mg of ink is injected per cm2 of skin, at a depth of 1-3 mm. The injected pigment is internalised by neutrophils, fibroblasts, and macrophages or dendritic cells. About 60-90 % of the pigment is then transported to the lymph nodes via the lymphatic

Carotenoids: Role in Neurodegenerative Diseases Remediation.

Numerous factors can contribute to the development of neurodegenerative disorders (NDs), such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Oxidative stress (OS), a fairly common ND symptom, can be caused by more reactive oxygen species being made. In addition, the pathological state of NDs, which includes a high number of protein aggregates, could make chronic inflammation worse by activating microglia. Carotenoids, often known as "CTs", are pigments that exist naturally and play a vital role in the prevention of seve

The Primary Microglial Leukodystrophies: A Review.

Primary microglial leukodystrophy or leukoencephalopathy are disorders in which a genetic defect linked to microglia causes cerebral white matter damage. Pigmented orthochromatic leukodystrophy, adult-onset orthochromatic leukodystrophy associated with pigmented macrophages, hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with (axonal) spheroids, and adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) are different terms apparently used to designate the same disease. However, ALSP linked to dominantly inherited mutations in CSF1R (colony stimulating factor receptor 1) cause

Axillary basal cell carcinoma in patients with Goltz-Gorlin syndrome: report of basal cell carcinoma in both axilla of a woman with basal cell nevus syndrome and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma of the axilla, an area that is not usually exposed to the sun, is rare. Individuals with basal cell nevus syndrome, a disorder associated with a mutation in the patch 1 (PTCH1) gene, develop numerous basal cell carcinomas. PURPOSE: To describe a woman with basal cell nevus syndrome who developed a pigmented basal cell carcinoma in each of her axilla and to review the features of axillary basal cell carcinoma patients with Goltz-Gorlin syndrome. METHODS: Pubmed was used to search the following terms: axillary basal cell carcinoma and basal cell nevus syndrome.

Immunohistochemical detection of P53 and Mdm2 in vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common depigmented skin disorder that is caused by selective destruction of melanocytes. It is generally accepted that the main function of melanin resides in the protection of skin cells against the deleterious effect of ultraviolet rays (UVRs). Association of vitiligo and skin cancer has been a subject of controversy. Occurrence of skin cancer in long-lasting vitiligo is rare despite multiple evidences of DNA damage in vitiliginous skin. AIM: To detect the expression of P53 and Mdm2 proteins in both depigmented and normally pigmented skin of vitiligo patients and t

Adrenocortical tumors, primary pigmented adrenocortical disease (PPNAD)/Carney complex, and other bilateral hyperplasias: the NIH studies.

It has been estimated that up to 1 in 10 adults has at least one adrenocortical nodule up to 1 cm on autopsy; these benign tumors may contribute to metabolic syndrome, hypertension, obesity and abnormalities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis that can be linked to other serious disorders such as osteoporosis, depression and late-onset diabetes mellitus. In addition, up to 1 in 1500 of these adrenal "incidentalomas" may hide a carcinoma, which, if diagnosed late or left untreated, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Consistent with the theme of this symposium,

Application of a pigment measuring device--Mexameter--for the differential diagnosis of vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus (ND) present similar hypopigmented macules with significantly different prognoses. Although the distinction between the two diseases is important, differential diagnosis relies on medical history and physical examination, which is far from decisive in some cases. The Mexameter is an objective skin color-measuring device, and has been reported to provide a reproducible and sensitive means of quantifying small skin color differences. In this study, we investigated the usefulness of a Mexameter for discriminating these diseases. METHODS: A sel

A novel frameshift mutation of SOX10 identified in Waardenburg syndrome type 2.

Waardenburg syndrome type 2 (WS2) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital sensorineural hearing loss, blue iris, and abnormal pigmentation of the hair and skin. WS2 is genetically heterogeneous, often resulting from pathogenic mutations in SOX10 gene. We identified a novel heterozygous frameshift mutation in SOX10 (NM_006941.4: c.22delT, p.S8Rfs*5) in a two-generation Chinese family with WS2 through whole exome sequencing. This mutation was present in both the proband, who exhibited typical features of hearing loss and pigmentation abnormalities, and his father, who showe

A Case Report of a Young Adult With Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome Presenting With Acute Small Bowel Obstruction: A Common Complication of an Uncommon Disease.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract, melanin pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes, and an increased risk for cancer. Radiological imaging, contrast studies, and scopy-directed biopsies confirm the diagnosis and help in surveillance. Hamartomatous mucosal polyps, which are characterized by a central core of branching smooth muscle connected to a mucosa unique to the site of origin, are pathognomonic for PJS. We present the case of a young male with a history of pain in the abdomen and vomi

Clinics in diagnostic imaging. 159. Jejunal intussusception due to Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

A 21-year-old woman presented with acute onset of upper abdominal pain. A diagnosis of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) was made based on the clinical picture of perioral pigmentation with imaging findings of transient jejunojejunal intussusceptions and small bowel polyps, and confirmed by characteristic histopathological appearances of Peutz-Jeghers polyps. PJS is a rare hereditary condition characterised by unique hamartomatous polyps, perioral mucocutaneous pigmentations, and increased susceptibility to gastrointestinal and extraintestinal neoplasms. Patients usually present with recurrent abdo

A nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene causes albinism in water buffalo.

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive hereditary pigmentation disorder affecting humans and several other animal species. Oculocutaneous albinism was studied in a herd of Murrah buffalo to determine the clinical presentation and genetic basis of albinism in this species. RESULTS: Clinical examinations and pedigree analysis were performed in an affected herd, and wild-type and OCA tyrosinase mRNA sequences were obtained. The main clinical findings were photophobia and a lack of pigmentation of the hair, skin, horns, hooves, mucosa, and iris. The results of segrega

Carotenemia. A review.

Awareness of carotenemia is important to avoid confusion with jaundice and unnecessary diagnostic studies. It is surprising how little information can be found about this relatively common condition in the standard pediatric textbooks. Ingestion of excessive amounts of carrots is the usual cause of carotenemia, but it can also be associated with ingestion of many other yellow vegetables, as well as some green vegetables. Mothers may unknowingly be giving their infants large amounts of carrots in the form of commercial infant food combinations. Carotenemia is a benign condition; vitamin A poiso

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome: an immunologic assessment of 15 cases.

PURPOSE: The Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder consisting of the triad of oculocutaneous albinism, a storage pool platelet defect, and multisystem tissue deposition of ceroid pigment. Although the underlying metabolic defect has not been identified, secondary or associated effects on the immune system are suggested by reports of an association with disorders such as pulmonary fibrosis, granulomatous colitis, lupus, and frequent bacterial infections. We evaluated a large group of patients with the Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome to assess immune competence in this condition
