This case study describes an instance of death in an early term female newborn with congenital apnea in the clinical setting of multiple congenital anomalies (retrognathia, posteriorly rotated ears, camptodactyly, and arthrogryposis) and prenatal history of polyhydramnios. Postmortem neuropathologic findings were significant for tegmental necrosis in the caudal pons and medulla characterized by a coalescence of microcalcifications accompanied by neuronal loss, axonal spheroids, gliosis, and a concomitant hypoplasia of the inferior olives. Primary brain tumours and pregnancy rarely occur together; meningioma and pregnancy is rarer still. A case of neuro-Behçet's disease with dementia and personality changes is described with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and neuropathological findings. Of 5 cases of brain stem hematoma, 4 males and 1 female, 4 had hematoma in the pons, and 1 in the midbrain. The diagnosis was confirmed by CT. Two cases had received craniotomy. Most patients with brainstem hemorrhage have a poor prognosis. There are occasional reports of a favorable outcome with hematomas restricted to the mid-brain region. We report two patients with hematomas within the lower brainstem (pons and medulla) who made a good recovery. Diagnosis was unsuspected until the cranial CT scan was done. Angiography was normal in both cases. Recovery was excellent in one and fair in the second patient. BACKGROUND: Beyond the first year after a heart transplant (HT) procedure, patients often develop dyslipidemias, which may be implicated in the genesis of transplant coronary heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) has a several anti-atherogenic properties, but the status of HDL in HT patients is still controversial. Nonetheless, determination of HDL cholesterol concentration is not sufficient for evaluation of the overall HDL protective role. In this study, a fundamental functional property of HDL, the ability to simultaneously receive the major lipid classes, was tested in HT patients.
