A Classifier Model Based on CT Data from Different CT Phases for Distinguishing LPAs and PCCs.

BACKGROUND: Lipid-poor adrenal adenomas (LPAs) and pheochromocytomas (PCCs) are similar tumours, but misdiagnosed LPAs may lead to health risks such as hypertensive crisis due to improper treatment. The aim of this study was to develop an efficient method for classifying LPAs and PCCs on the basis of different CT scans that minimises the number of radiation doses. METHODS: The patients included in this study were randomly divided into training and validation groups (the ratio was 7:3). The datasets, including 2-(plain and venous enhanced CT scans) or 3-phase CT data, were separately used to c

A lightweight machine learning approach for predicting breast cancer risk based on routine clinical indicators in the Chinese population.

BackgroundConventional breast cancer screening is limited by cost, access, and patient discomfort. Whether a lightweight machine-learning model trained on routine laboratory indicators can support opportunistic screening remains unsettled.MethodsA retrospective cohort of 13,285 individuals (1,216 ICD-10 C50 cases, 12,069 controls) from a Chinese tertiary hospital during 2022 to 2024 was analysed with a leakage-controlled pipeline. Six classical learners and LightGBM were trained on twenty indicators, then assessed by discrimination, calibration, decision-curve analysis, and zero-shot UK Bioban

Lung cancer risk prediction using interpretable ensemble models on lifestyle and clinical data.

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, where early detection and reliable risk assessment are critical for improving outcomes. This study develops and evaluates a range of ensemble learning models for lung cancer prediction using lifestyle and clinical indicators, with an emphasis on both predictive performance and interpretability. Five base learners-logistic regression, k-nearest neighbors, naïve Bayes, support vector machine, and linear discriminant analysis-were used to construct multiple boosting and bagging models. Building on these, voting a

Explainable ensemble machine learning framework with particle swarm optimization for predicting compressive strength of CO₂-cured concrete.

The increasing demand for low-carbon construction materials has led to growing interest in carbonation-cured concrete, which enables permanent sequestration of carbon dioxide while influencing material performance. However, predicting the compressive strength of CO₂-cured concrete remains challenging due to complex nonlinear interactions between mixture composition and curing conditions. Unlike previous studies that employed single algorithms with grid search optimization, this study integrates seven advanced ensemble models with metaheuristic optimization, multi-level interpretability analysi

Enhancing genomic prediction for key production traits in chickens through ultrasound phenotyping and multi-model comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Growth performance and carcass traits are economically vital in poultry breeding. In Wenchang chickens, reducing excessive abdominal fat represents a critical breeding objective. However, as a typical carcass trait, abdominal fat thickness has traditionally been measurable only post-slaughter, resulting in inefficient and costly selection processes that hinder genetic progress for these traits. To overcome this limitation, we developed an integrated approach combining non-invasive ultrasound phenotyping and multi-model genomic selection to evaluate growth and fat-related traits in

Accurate, Robust, and Scalable Machine Abstraction of Mayo Endoscopic Subscores From Colonoscopy Reports.

BACKGROUND: The Mayo endoscopic subscore (MES) is an important quantitative measure of disease activity in ulcerative colitis. Colonoscopy reports in routine clinical care usually characterize ulcerative colitis disease activity using free text description, limiting their utility for clinical research and quality improvement. We sought to develop algorithms to classify colonoscopy reports according to their MES. METHODS: We annotated 500 colonoscopy reports from 2 health systems. We trained and evaluated 4 classes of algorithms. Our primary outcome was accuracy in identifying scorable reports

Comorbidity Scoring with Causal Disease Networks.

In recent years, there has been numerous studies constructing a disease network with diverse sources of data. Many researchers attempted to extend the usage of the disease network by employing machine learning algorithms on various problems such as prediction of comorbidity. The relations between diseases can further be specified into causal relations. When causality is laid on the edges in the network, prediction for comorbid diseases can be more improved. However, not many machine learning algorithms have been developed to concern causality. In this study, we exploit a network based machine

Ophthalmic artery doppler in screening for preeclampsia - a systematic review of current evidence.

Preeclampsia (PE) complicates 2-15% of all pregnancies and continues to be a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. The incidence is about three times higher in multiple gestations compared to singleton pregnancies. Early identification of women at high risk for PE is crucial; first-trimester screening has become a standard component of prenatal care. This systematic review aims to summarize current evidence on the role of ophthalmic artery Doppler (OAD) in predicting PE among singleton and twins. Recent research has enabled the development of algorithms for PE prediction based on

Time-to-event ensemble machine learning approach for predicting long-term survival of abdominal aortic aneurysm patients undergoing endovascular aneurysm repair.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is associated with risks such as endoleaks and late aneurysm rupture, highlighting the importance of long-term survival prediction. Despite recent advancements in machine learning (ML), predictive models utilizing time-to-event analysis remain limited for AAA patients undergoing EVAR. We aimed to develop a stacking ensemble ML model to predict long-term outcomes in EVAR-treated AAA patients. METHODS: From 2002 to 2019, a total of 12,312 patients underwent EVAR. The primary outcome was AAA-related mortality, wi

The Development and Validation of Models of Risk for Behaviours That Challenge in Children With Developmental Disabilities: A Novel Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental disabilities show a high prevalence of behaviours that challenge (BtC). Thus, harnessing known risk markers to target early intervention to children at the greatest risk of BtC is essential. In this study, machine learning techniques were used to develop prediction models of risk (no, low and high severity behaviour) for different BtC (self-injurious behaviour, aggression, property destruction, 'any BtC'). A secondary aim was to assess the external validation of these models to predict future behaviour. METHOD: Caregivers of individuals with development
