A five year retrospective review of anorectal abscesses included 181 admissions in which all but five were explained by the anal glandular hypothesis of causation. Delays in treatment occurred because of misdiagnosis, attempts at nonoperative management and inhospital procrastination. These abscesses are notorious for the recurrence rate after treatment. BACKGROUND: Chronic radiation proctopathy (CRP) is a common sequela occurring even many years after pelvic radiation. Current ablative therapies for bleeding ectatic vessels have the potential for deep tissue injury leading to ulcerations, perforation, and fistulas. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy avoids deep tissue injury and is a promising treatment for CRP.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We conducted this study in order to investigate prognostic factors, and the difference of efficacy of three medical regimens, in the treatment of radiation-induced rectal ulcer.
METHODOLOGY: We enrolled 38 pts, with different ages, the free interval from radiation to the appearance of symptoms, and the rectal ulcer size. Medical regimens were 1) sucralfate enema, 2) salasopyrine + hydrocortisone enemas, 3) combination of regimens. We analyzed the difference of frequency of ulcer healing and the time necessary for ulcer healing, between the patients in the different groups.

We examined 19 patients (17 men) with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and gastrointestinal symptoms to determine whether those symptoms were due to either a gastrointestinal tract infection or a defect in mucosal absorption because of an enteropathy. The erythrocyte folate and serum vitamin B12 levels were within normal limits in all of the patients. The serum ferritin level was elevated in 12. Based on this experience and reports in the literature, preoperative management and operative technics are discussed. INTRODUCTION: Large-vessel vasculitis, including Takayasu arteritis and giant cell arteritis (GCA), is a recognized extraintestinal manifestation of ulcerative colitis (UC), but its optimal management remains unclear.
