The calming effect of a new wearable device during the anticipation of public speech.

We assessed the calming effect of doppel, a wearable device that delivers heartbeat-like tactile stimulation on the wrist. We tested whether the use of doppel would have a calming effect on physiological arousal and subjective reports of state anxiety during the anticipation of public speech, a validated experimental task that is known to induce anxiety. Two groups of participants were tested in a single-blind design. Both groups wore the device on their wrist during the anticipation of public speech, and were given the cover story that the device was measuring blood pressure. For only one gro

[Work-stress and cortisol; measurements and results].

Physiological measurements of stress are believed to help with the 'objectivation' of the rather subjective phenomenon called 'stress'. Because there are only moderate interpersonal correlations between the subjective experience of work-stress and physiological stress measurements, the latter are useful mainly for comparing groups with high stress and groups with low stress and not as a diagnostic tool at individual level. Physiological measurements have added value because they quantify the strain that stress exerts on the body, which ultimately determines what effect stress has on health. In

Testosterone, facial symmetry and cooperation in the prisoners' dilemma.

Recent research has analyzed how individual characteristics, like the exposure to different hormones and symmetry, affect decision-making and strategic behaviour. The present article investigates the effect of symmetry, of exposure to testosterone (T) in utero and during puberty and of current T on cooperation in a Prisoners' Dilemma Game (PDG). T is a hormone with well known effect on males' behaviour, and that promotes activities that seek to increase reproductive success. Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) reflects the ability of the organism to maintain a stable development and it is usually emplo

[Study of the stress response: role of anxiety, cortisol and DHEAs].

AIM OF THE STUDY: Several studies have exhibited the psychological processes that are implied in the stress response and have shown, according to Selye's research, the participation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the major role of cortisol. The possible action of another adrenal steroïd, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), is increasingly documented. The beneficial effect of the latter and his antistress role would be related to an antagonistic action to that of cortisol. The aim of our study was, first to assess biological and psychological aspects of the stress response, then to d

Determinants of First-Line Nurse Managers' Span of Control: A Delphi Study.

Aims: The main goal of this research is to identify, through expert consensus, the key factors that determine the span of control (SOC) of first-line nurse managers (FLNMs) in the Spanish healthcare system. Background: The SOC is a management concept which has usually been defined as the number of subordinates reporting to a superior. In nursing, however, it is much more complex. This complexity is shaped by various factors related to patients, healthcare professionals and organisational structures. Nursing leaders must thoroughly consider these factors and their determinants, which necessitat

[Population-based studies on alcohol-related harm in Spain].

Based on the review of scientific papers and institutional reports on the subject and analysis of some secondary data, we assess the alcohol-related harm in Spain between 1990 and 2011. In 2011 they could be attributable to alcohol, 10% of the total mortality of the population aged 15-64, and about 30% of deaths due to traffic accidents. Among the population aged 15-64 years at least 0.8% had alcohol use disorders, an additional 5% could have harmful alcohol consumption that would need clinical evaluation, and about 20% had had some acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) in the last year. The AAI ac

Research agenda for ending preventable maternal deaths from postpartum haemorrhage: a WHO research prioritisation exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal death. Yet there is a lack of clarity around what research is needed to determine what works and how best to deliver proven PPH interventions. This article describes a WHO-led effort to develop a global PPH research agenda for 2023-2030, to reinvigorate research and innovation while avoiding duplication and waste. METHODS: Potential questions were culled from evidence gaps in a forthcoming Lancet PPH series, a pipeline analysis on PPH medicines and devices, international PPH guidelines, previous research prioriti

Deciphering drug discovery and microbial pathogenesis research in tuberculosis during the two decades of postgenomic era using entity mining approach.

We examined literature on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) subsequent to its genome release, spanning years 1999-2020. We employed scientometric mapping, entity mining, visualization techniques, and PubMed and PubTator databases. Most popular keywords, most active research groups, and growth in quantity of publications were determined. By gathering annotations from the PubTator, we determined direction of research in the areas of drug hypersensitivity, drug resistance (AMR), and drug-related side effects. Additionally, we examined the patterns in research on Mtb metabolism and various forms of

New trends in the treatment of blepharospasm: replacing the standardized approach with a personalized approach.

INTRODUCTION: Blepharospasm is a type of dystonia associated with overactivity of the orbicularis oculi and nearby muscles causing significant disability. Available treatments are only symptomatic, and many patients experience disability related to incomplete symptom relief. AREAS COVERED: The authors provide a review the phenomenology of blepharospasm and its usual treatments. The evidence for botulinum toxin, oral pharmaceuticals and surgical treatments are summarized. Despite considerable phenotypic heterogeneity, the literature indicates a standardized approach to treatment is often pursu

The Memory T Cell "Communication Web" in Context with Gastrointestinal Disorders-How Memory T Cells Affect Their Surroundings and How They Are Influenced by It.

Gut-related diseases like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or colorectal cancer affect millions of people worldwide. It is an ongoing process finding causes leading to the development and manifestation of those disorders. This is highly relevant since understanding molecular processes and signalling pathways offers new opportunities in finding novel ways to interfere with and apply new pharmaceuticals. Memory T cells (mT cells) and their pro-inflammatory properties have been proven to play an important role in gastrointestinal diseases and are therefore increasingly spotlighted. This revie

HDL in Immune-Inflammatory Responses: Implications beyond Cardiovascular Diseases.

High density lipoproteins (HDL) are heterogeneous particles composed by a vast array of proteins and lipids, mostly recognized for their cardiovascular (CV) protective effects. However, evidences from basic to clinical research have contributed to depict a role of HDL in the modulation of immune-inflammatory response thus paving the road to investigate their involvement in other diseases beyond those related to the CV system. HDL-C levels and HDL composition are indeed altered in patients with autoimmune diseases and usually associated to disease severity. At molecular levels, HDL have been sh

Parent-Child Communication regarding Sport-Related Concussion: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Extant research has discussed the importance of social climates surrounding sport-related concussion (SRC) reporting, especially the need to address parents/guardians' role in concussion management. This study explores parents/guardians' intentions toward SRC-related conversations with their children and their seeking of conversational resources via the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data collected from 292 parents/guardians of 1st-12th graders who play contact sports are examined via a structural equation model. The results indicate that parents/guardians' intention toward communicating wi

A critical evaluation of validity and utility of translational imaging in pain and analgesia: Utilizing functional imaging to enhance the process.

Assessing clinical pain and metrics related to function or quality of life predominantly relies on patient reported subjective measures. These outcome measures are generally not applicable to the preclinical setting where early signs pointing to analgesic value of a therapy are sought, thus introducing difficulties in animal to human translation in pain research. Evaluating brain function in patients and respective animal model(s) has the potential to characterize mechanisms associated with pain or pain-related phenotypes and thereby provide a means of laboratory to clinic translation. Eating and drinking in labor: should it be allowed?

Eating and drinking in labor is a controversial subject with practice varying widely by practitioners, within facilities, and around the world. The risk of aspiration pneumonitis and anesthesia-related deaths at cesarean section has resulted in adherence to historical practices of starving women in labor. Studies have shown that the risk of this anesthetic-related complication is low. It is the fear of the birth-attendant to bear full responsibility if a patient inhales gastric contents when giving in to demands for liberal fluid and food regimes during labor that governs practice. While the b
